Polycystic Ovary Syndrome May Be Linked To Memory Problems In Later Years

A 30-year study of over 900 participants has found an association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and problems with memory and cognition. While it’s not possible to say for sure that PCOS caused the observed issues‚ the scientists behind the work say more research is now needed to better understand these potential risks of a condition that many struggle with for years before getting a diagnosis. The World Health Organization estimates that PCOS could affect up to 13 percent of reproductive-aged women. Other figures have also been cited‚ and data can vary depending upon the inclusion of those assigned female at birth as well as cisgender women. However you slice it‚ though‚ up to 70 percent of those affected remain undiagnosed‚ so there’s a big gap in recognition of the condition that is not being filled at present. As the name suggests‚ one of the symptoms of PCOS is the formation of cysts in the ovaries. The condition is characterized by hormonal imbalances‚ leading to things like irregular periods‚ lack of ovulation‚ excess facial and body hair‚ and weight gain. It’s a leading cause of infertility‚ and is linked to comorbidities like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.Quite apart from the debilitating physical symptoms‚ many people with PCOS also experience negative psychological impacts from the disease‚ including depression and poor body image. Now a new study‚ which followed 907 female participants for 30 years‚ has uncovered a possible link between PCOS and problems with memory and cognition in middle age. Study author Dr Heather G. Huddleston of the University of California San Francisco explained in a statement that while scientists have a understanding of how PCOS can affect metabolic health‚ “less is known about how this condition affects brain health.” “Our results suggest that people with this condition have lower memory and thinking skills and subtle brain changes at midlife. This could impact a person on many levels‚ including quality of life‚ career success and financial security.”The participants were aged between 18 and 30 years old at the start of the study period. After 30 years‚ at which time 66 members of the study group had PCOS‚ they were asked to complete tests of memory‚ verbal ability‚ processing speed‚ and attention. One of the tests for attention was the Stroop test‚ which you’ve probably seen before: you’re presented with a list of color names written in different colored fonts‚ and you have to state the color of the text rather than reading the actual word. The study found that the average score for people with PCOS was around 11 percent lower than for those without the condition.Overall‚ scores in three of the tests – focusing on memory‚ attention‚ and verbal abilities – were lower for those with PCOS‚ after adjusting for age‚ race‚ and education. As well as the cognitive tests at year 30‚ a subgroup of the participants (291‚ of whom 25 had PCOS) also received brain scans at years 25 and 30. The scans revealed lower white matter integrity in the patients with PCOS‚ which the researchers say could indicate premature brain aging. The study has some limitations‚ in particular the fact that the PCOS diagnoses were not made by a doctor but were based on tests of the patients’ hormone levels and their self-reported symptoms. It’s also not possible from these data to say definitively that PCOS caused the cognitive and brain changes observed‚ but the researchers believe there’s enough here to warrant further investigation. “Additional research is needed to confirm these findings and to determine how this change occurs‚ including looking at changes that people can make to reduce their chances of thinking and memory problems‚” said Huddleston.“Making changes like incorporating more cardiovascular exercise and improving mental health may serve to also improve brain aging for this population.”The study is published in the journal Neurology.

Doom? Legacy Media ONCE AGAIN Peddles Climate Propaganda Through ‘Doomsday Clock’

Leftist media outlets have really outdone themselves trying to convince Americans that the climate apocalypse is imminent.  Several legacy media outlets jumped on an opportunity to make ridiculous claims about the supposed threat of “climate disasters” using the insane “Doomsday Clock” analogy. USA Today‚ CNN and The Washington Post each claimed that  there are “90 seconds to midnight” on the Doomsday Clock – meaning the world is reportedly the closest it has ever been to the “theoretical point of annihilation.” The outlets absurdly warned that the impending doom is in part due to climate change. Of all of the leftist media outlets‚ USA Today took the cake for the most blatant pandering. The outlet published an op-ed piece pushing for absurd climate action by making climate change as important as international wars. The Jan. 23 piece‚ written by the president of the Bulletin of Atomic Sciences and Doomsday Clock boss Rachel Bronson‚ complained about oil production‚ claiming that “we need to move even faster” to enact extreme climate agendas.  In yet another case of extreme climate fear-mongering‚ CNN claimed on Jan. 23 that the clock was meant to “gauge how close humanity is to destroying the world” and “spark conversations about difficult scientific topics such as climate change‚” as well as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza..CNN‚ like USA Today‚ also quoted Bronson who said that the “lack of action on climate change threatens billions of lives and livelihoods” because of “climate related disasters.” The Washington Post followed a similar path in its own piece about the metaphorical clock. On Jan. 24‚ The Post lumped in an alleged “spiraling climate crisis” with the current wars in Gaza and Ukraine as “threats continuing to put human existence under pressure.”. Also like CNN‚ The Post peddled crazy eco-extremist talking points about climate disasters to justify the clock’s heavy consideration of climate change. To make matters worse‚ the Doomsday Clock has a very biased history.  The Bulletin of Atomic Sciences has included climate change as one of the risk factors considered in its doomsday estimations since 2007‚ according to Reuters. Bronson‚ along with other supporters of the Doomsday Clock climate agenda‚ donated much more to Democrats than to Republicans‚ according to research conducted by MRC Business in 2018. It’s clear what they really believe and support. Conservatives are under attack. Contact USA Today at 800-872-0001‚ CNN at 1-404-827-1500 and The Washington Post at 800-477-4679 demand that they distance themselves from leftist fear-mongers like the Doomsday Clock.

Fani Willis under fire again‚ this time for terminating whistleblower who called out possible misuse of federal grant: Audio

Fani Willis under fire again‚ this time for terminating whistleblower who called out possible misuse of federal grant: Audio

On the heels of accusations that she had a lavish affair with a fellow prosecutor in the case against former President Donald Trump‚ Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is now facing heat for another possible scandal. According to exclusive audio released by the Washington Free Beacon‚ Willis fired a woman who warned her that another office employee planned to take federal grant money and spend it on computers‚ "swag‚" and "travel" instead.Amanda Timpson began working as the director of gang prevention and intervention for the Fulton County DA's Office in December 2018. Two years later‚ Willis defeated longtime incumbent Paul Howard and appointed Timpson to serve on the 2021 executive leadership team‚ tasked with "rebranding" and "changing" the office culture. At first‚ Timpson was excited about the new direction the office had taken‚ but her feelings changed when Willis appointed Michael Cuffee to be her direct supervisor. Not only did Timpson and Cuffee sometimes butt heads‚ but Timpson soon learned that Cuffee apparently intended to take some of the $488‚000 of federal money earmarked to establish the Center of Youth Empowerment and Gang Prevention and spend it elsewhere. In November 2021‚ Timpson went to Willis with her concerns about Cuffee and the federal funds. "He wanted to do things with grants that were impossible‚" Timpson told Willis‚ according to audio footage Timpson secretly recorded. "He told everybody ... 'We're gonna get MacBooks. We're going to get swag. We're going to use it for travel‚'" she continued.Timpson explained to Willis that she knew such expenditures would be illegal since she "helped write the grant." When Timpson confronted Cuffee about the issue‚ he demoted her‚ she claimed. "I said‚ 'You cannot do this. It's a very‚ very specific grant.' "[He] took me off‚" Timpson said.During the conversation‚ Willis never denied Timpson's allegations against Cuffee and the DA's office in general. In fact‚ she told Timpson‚ "I respect that is your assessment. ... And I'm not saying that your assessment is wrong." — (@) "I have been humiliated and retaliated against for doing the right thing‚" Timpson wrote in an email to Willis just a few weeks later‚ "trying to protect your administration from scandal and advocate for the youth I was charged with working on behalf of."Willis never responded. Cuffee left the DA's office in December 2021 for "personal" reasons. The Center of Youth Empowerment and Gang Prevention was never established‚ and the building that was intended to house it has been "padlocked" shut‚ the Free Beacon said. The recording also alludes to another intra-office issue regarding federal funds. In July 2021‚ Timpson informed Willis that students from out of state had participated in a federally funded program designated for Atlanta and Fulton County public middle school students only. Rather than address the issue‚ Willis cut Timpson off and "demoted" her "to a file clerk‚" claimed Timpson‚ who was under performance review at the time. She told the Free Beacon that Willis' behavior during the July 2021 conversation prompted her to record the November 2021 conversation about Cuffee."I knew it was me against the entire office‚" she said. "If I didn't get any hard evidence about what I was saying‚ everyone was just going to write me off."Willis fired Timpson in January 2022‚ just two months after the recorded conversation‚ and had her escorted out of the office by armed guards. "I am 4'11" on my best day‚" Timpson recently told the Free Beacon. "Who is so scared of me that you have to walk me out of the building by seven armed investigators?"Timpson later filed a wrongful termination suit in Fulton County Superior Court. That case is in discovery. Timpson told the Free Beacon that‚ between her case and the claims that Willis had an affair with Nathan Wade‚ Willis has shown a "pattern" of "ethical violations‚ abuse of power‚ and the misuse of county‚ state‚ and federal funds."Willis' office issued a statement regarding Timpson's whistleblower lawsuit: "This employee was a holdover from the prior administration. Management attempted to find a role she could fill‚ but was unsuccessful after transferring within the office three times. All of her supervisors found her performance to be inadequate. Her failure to meet the standards of the new administration led to her termination. We have not been served with the lawsuit and will not comment further except in court."Cuffee told the Free Beacon that Timpson's lawsuit was "a money grab." "She can do what she needs to do‚" he added.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors‚ sign up for our newsletters‚ and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Climate alarmist champions limiting families to one child; claims having more children is 'selfish'

Climate alarmists are becoming increasingly forthright about their hostility toward human life. Donnachadh McCarthy‚ a failed politician involved in Just Stop Oil and one of the leading figures of Extinction Rebellion‚ recently went on British television to peddle depopulationist solutions to imagined problems. McCarthy suggested to GB News — just weeks after calling for Israeli forces to surrender — that "there is a moral issue" with having too many children and that families should be limited to one child. When China adopted as policy the voluntary scheme McCarthy proposed Tuesday‚ it ended up with a half-billion dead children‚ a devastating sex ratio imbalance‚ and a demographic crisis. It's clear‚ however‚ that a similar population collapse is precisely what McCarthy and other alarmists want for the West. McCarthy — who has previously shared a stage with photo opportunist Greta Thunberg — made clear that he regards children as mobile pollutants‚ citing disputed statistics as evidence. "Every child in an industrial country like ours has around 505 hundred tonnes of carbon over their lifetime‚" said McCarthy‚ who has himself fed plants with his carbon dioxide for over 64 years. "That's equivalent to 1‚000 years of electricity for a household. So each child has an impact‚ and we're saying one is great‚ two is plenty‚ and three is selfish." McCarthy made clear that he is not only concerned about procreation in Western nations like the United Kingdom — which accounts for less than 1% of global carbon dioxide emissions. He similarly bemoaned the British government's apparent failure to do more to help the developing world abort its young. "When women have access to family planning‚ rights to work and a right to education‚ the birth rate falls naturally‚" he said. "What I think is tragic is that the U.K. government have cut funds for girls in the developing world‚ and I think that is sad." McCarthy appears to have been referring to the U.K.'s 2022 reduction in funding for foreign abortions‚ euphemistically referred to as sexual and reproductive health rights‚ by nearly a third. The climate alarmist has long been a proponent of abortion‚ claiming that the pro-life position of the "patriarchal Abrahamic religions ... is a stain on human progress." Despite his apparent desire to have the human population reined in‚ McCarthy's group Extinction Rebellion elsewhere claims to be a movement for the young dedicated to combating a system "contemptuous of humanity." Nicole Ratcliff‚ a parenting coach on the GB News panel with McCarthy‚ said in response to the radical's depopulationist rhetoric‚ "I am one of four. I'm sorry‚ we've got a lovely family‚ and the idea that three is selfish is shocking." "For me‚ I think if someone is choosing not to have children because of climate change‚ that is not somebody who is driven to have them‚" said Ratcliff. "The need to have children is something that is built within us‚ and if you are somebody that wants to have them‚ then you can't switch that urge off." "There are people out there pending every single penny that they have got to have a child‚ and if they are made to feel guilty they are contributing to climate change — I feel quite offended by the idea that bringing a much-loved child into the world would be a bad thing to do‚" added Ratcliff. — (@) Like other radicals‚ McCarthy's climate hysteria has not only pitted him against big‚ happy families‚ but also against daily showers‚ affordable energy‚ holiday flights‚ road trips‚ water hoses‚ critics of communist China‚ meat‚ and pet ownership. Nebraska considers amending law to allow pharmacies to give out needles for controlled substance use

Nebraska has proposed legislation that would allow pharmacies and health programs to distribute hypodermic needles that would be used for illicit drugs‚ in attempt to prevent the spread of disease.Bill 307 was passed in the Nebraska legislature by a vote of 37-2 and will ultimately need approval through another round of voting before being given to Republican Governor Jim Pillen for review.State Senator Megan Hunt‚ who introduced the bill on January 11‚ 2024‚ thanked her colleagues for approaching her with their issues instead of rejecting the legislation."Instead of just voting no‚ you brought your questions to me and we resolved them‚" she said‚ according to SCNR."That’s really what we were sent here to do. That’s what the work of lawmaking is about."As of at least March 2023‚ Senator Hunt was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. The law currently says it is a crime for any person to "deliver‚ possess with intent to deliver‚ or manufacture" drug paraphernalia knowing that it would be used to "manufacture‚ inject‚ ingest‚ or inhale or otherwise be used to introduce into the human body a controlled substance."The new bill would amend the law to exclude pharmacies and "the staff or participants of a public or behavioral health program."Violating the state law can result in a Class II misdemeanor‚ which can be punished by more than six months and a $1‚000 fine.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention‚ when people inject drugs through a syringe service program‚ they are more likely to enter treatment for substance abuse. As well‚ the CDC also claimed that those who have used syringe service programs regularly are "nearly three times as likely to report a reduction in injection frequency as those who have never used" such a program. The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction noted that the United States "supports a continued congressional ban on the use of federal funds to support" needle exchange programs. In other countries like the Netherlands‚ the first needle exchange program on record was implemented in Amsterdam in 1984.Canada established its first program in 1989 and now operates over 30 across the country. Similar to the proposed Nebraska bill‚ Canadian law dictates that syringes cannot be provided for illicit drugs unless the needle is "represented for use in preventing" HIV infection.Syringe exchange programs were operational in over 40 states as of 2022‚ SCNR noted.Like Blaze News? Utah breaks free from DEI regime after Texas and Florida paved the way

Utah breaks free from DEI regime after Texas and Florida paved the way

Utah joined other Republican states this week in breaking free of the DEI regime. Republican state Rep. Katy Hall's HB 261‚ among the six bills Gov. Spencer Cox (R) ratified Tuesday‚ prohibits universities‚ the public education system‚ and the state government from engaging in discriminatory DEI practices. HB 261‚ titled "Equal Opportunity Initiatives‚" bars such state organizations from using an individual's immutable characteristics in decisions concerning employment or education. It also prohibits them from requiring people to submit documentation or attend training that "promotes differential treatment" before‚ during‚ or after admission or employment. The school and governmental offices once tasked with discriminating on the basis of sex‚ sexual preference‚ race‚ and other immutable characteristics are similarly forbidden. Accordingly‚ university departments like chief diversity officer Emma Houston's at the University of Utah will soon be history. The legislation also requires that the Utah Board of Higher Education‚ the State Board of Education‚ the state auditor‚ and executive directors routinely review and report equal opportunity compliance as a means of safeguarding against a return to the discriminatory scheme increasingly championed in various blue states as well as by corporate advocates like billionaire Mark Cuban. State Sen. Keith Grover‚ who sponsored the bill with Hall‚ said‚ "This bill will ensure institutions remain neutral on political issues‚ while students and faculty are able to express their opinions freely." Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) thanked Hall‚ Grover‚ and others who supported the HB 261‚ stressing on X‚ "Utah is defunding divisive DEI programs and replacing them with Equal Opportunity Access for ALL children‚ regardless of Race‚ Creed‚ or Color. MLK's dream lives on." Former Utah Republican Party Chair James Evans‚ the state's first black GOP state senator‚ said HB 261 "expands the opportunity for all students at risk of graduating from college or university for them to receive additional assistance based on their individualized needs‚ not based on their group identity but on what their specific needs are‚" reported Deseret News. Heritage Action's Utah state director‚ Nathan Duell‚ praised both the Utah Legislature and Cox for getting the bill across the finish line‚ stating‚ "Today is a great day for Utahns. HB 261 is a victory for academic freedom‚ opportunity‚ and debate—and shows that DEI’s discriminatory policies have no place in the Beehive State." Gov. Cox‚ who has recently begun shifting back to the right amidst his gubernatorial re-election push‚ said in a statement‚ "We've been concerned about some DEI programs and policies‚ particularly with hiring practices‚ and this bill offers a balanced solution." "We firmly believe that Utah is stronger because of our diversity and we remain committed to keeping our state a place where everyone can thrive‚" continued the governor. "Over the past three years‚ our administration has worked very intentionally with many community stakeholders to expand opportunities for all Utahns and we will continue to do so." Cox attempted to distinguish Utah's offensive against DEI from "other states that simply eliminated DEI funding with no alternative path for students who may be struggling." While Cox claimed Utah did not follow "the lead" of other states‚ Utah nevertheless traveled a path blazed by Florida and Texas. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order in February 2023 ordering all public institutions in the Lone Star State to end their DEI practices. In May‚ Abbott ratified SB 17‚ thereby shutting down university DEI offices and programs in the state. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a bill in May 2023 defunding discriminatory DEI programs at Florida state universities and colleges. "If you look at the way this has actually been implemented across the country‚ DEI is better viewed as standing for discrimination‚ exclusion and indoctrination‚" said DeSantis. "And that has no place in our public institutions." DeSantis' efforts against DEI continue to bear fruit. Just last week‚ Florida's Board of Governors voted to ban state spending on DEI programs across all public universities. Other red states‚ such as North Carolina‚ Tennessee‚ North Dakota‚ Oklahoma‚ and Wisconsin also beat the Beehive State to the punch in getting laws or executive orders on the books banning DEI funding or hiring requirements. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education‚ 52 anti-DEI laws have been introduced since 2023. Eight appear to have so far become law. Meanwhile‚ the Associated Press indicated there is a leftist counter-offensive afoot. Democrats have filed at least 20 bills championing DEI in nine states‚ including Florida. Like Blaze News?
