I’m proud to have served my country, and I know firsthand the sacrifices that come with wearing the uniform. Our veterans deserve the best, and under President Trump’s leadership, we made historic strides to ensure our heroes receive the care they earned. But under Biden and Harris, we’ve seen our veterans once again pushed aside for the sake of political agendas. The current state of the Department of Veteran Affairs is unacceptable, and it’s time to fix this once and for all. Together with President Trump, we’ll restore the honor and support our veterans deserve. Under President Trump’s first term, we achieved monumental progress for our nation’s veterans. For instance, he signed the VA Choice and VA MISSION Acts, granting our heroes the permanent option to see their own doctors and access care at non-VA facilities. These reforms made a real impact: 3 in 4 veterans reported improvements at their local VA, with shorter wait times and expanded community care options. But now, the Biden-Harris administration has allowed our VA system to crumble under the weight of mismanagement, waste, fraud, and leftist initiatives that prioritize bureaucrats over veterans. This has resulted in tragic setbacks for those who have given everything for this country. The good news? We have a golden opportunity to fix the VA once and for all — and we will. Here’s how: Just Say No To DEI In a second Trump administration, merit-based hiring and evaluation must be a top priority. Let’s ensure that the VA hires and promotes employees based on skills, performance, and dedication to veterans. This approach will strengthen the workforce and ensure veterans are served by the most qualified individuals. DEI mandates are having destructive and measurable impacts on the VA system. For example, the group Do No Harm recently uncovered that the Biden-Harris administration focused on “diversity” programs even as veterans faced a massive claims backlog. On day one, President Trump can sign an executive order directing each department head to eliminate required employee trainings that surround, involve, relate, or have any nexus to: “gender identity,” “Critical Race Theory,” “implicit bias,” “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” or in any way scapegoats and entire group of people for the outcomes of any other group. And in Congress, we can pass new legislation codifying that order and ensuring that our federal government is making hiring decisions based on merit and job performance. Restore Accountability In their final days in office, the Biden administration recently reinstated thousands of VA employees terminated under President Trump’s first administration. This included employees engaging in conduct such as sleeping on the job and employees who gained unauthorized access to patient medical records. Not only were they reinstated but these employees cumulatively received over $134 million in back pay. Under President Trump, we must again terminate these employees. Because President Trump will not surrender to Democrat-aligned government unions. And for us in Congress, let’s use this opportunity to build on the 2017 Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act to ensure that employees who fail our veterans will pay the price. Increasing Choice, Quality Of Care, And Contract Competency It’s long past due to enhance the VA’s ability to develop and manage contracts that focus on real service outcomes, prioritizing contracts with vendors who demonstrate proven capabilities to meet veterans’ needs effectively and efficiently. Under President Trump’s leadership, Congress in 2018 passed the VA MISSION ACT to create a VA community care network, allowing veterans to receive timely and quality care from both VA and non-VA providers. This program is vital for veterans to have the flexibility and choice they need to get the best care possible. But in their final days in office, Biden bureaucrats are quietly aiming to overhaul the entire CCN structure by reducing the number of geographic regions in the entire country from 5 to just 2. This is good for the swamp, but it’s terrible for veterans. Such an extreme decision would only reduce choice and decrease quality of care. The good news is, President Trump and the incoming Veterans Health Administration leadership can end this scheme on day one. And in Congress, we can pass legislation to protect veterans’ healthcare and ensure that decisions on who provides and administers that care is based on merit, capability and performance. Benefits Delayed Are Benefits Denied We must ensure that veterans receive the benefits they have earned through their service. The responsibility should be on the VA, not the veteran, to get benefits decisions correct, and VA officials should be held accountable for delays and failures. Coordinate With DOD On Medical Documentation It’s time to streamline the VA claims process for transitioning service members, reducing backlogs, and improving access to care. This can be done through increased coordination with Department of Defense (DoD) hospitals to document service-related injuries and conditions as they happen. Our veterans can’t afford delays. Our veterans didn’t back down when duty called, and now it’s our turn to serve them. Under the leadership of President Trump, we will make the VA a place where our heroes receive the respect, care, and resources they rightfully deserve. The Biden administration’s incompetence has cost veterans precious time and benefits. But with Trump back in the White House, and fighters like me in Congress, we will restore the VA to its former greatness. We will make sure no veteran is left behind — no more red tape, no more delays, just action and results. This Veterans Day, let’s not just thank those who served; let’s commit to fighting for them as hard as they fought for us. Together, we’ll honor their sacrifice, fix the VA, and build an America worthy of the brave men and women who defended it. Because when it comes to our veterans, failure is not an option. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said this week that there will be “severe consequences” for Iran once President-elect Donald Trump takes office because of their attempts to assassinate him. Cruz made the remarks during the most recent episode of his “Verdict” podcast with co-host Ben Ferguson while discussing last week’s elections. “Election Day was a fantastic day for America. It was a fantastic day for everyone who wants to see jobs, who wants to see border security, who wants to see national security enhanced,” Cruz said. “But it was a terrible, terrible day for the Ayatollah and the Iranian mullahs.” The Texas senator, who won re-election last week for another six-year term, said that the Biden-Harris was not only responsible for Iran’s increased aggression, they also paid for it by not enforcing sanctions. “The Trump administration is going to cut off the money,” he said. “That’s going to be the beginning and I expect serious consequences for Iran repeatedly trying to murder President Trump. I don’t know what those consequences will be, but I guarantee you, the Ayatollah and the mullahs are deeply, deeply worried and scared.” He also called out the Department of Justice for not disclosing the most recent plot from Iran until after Election Day. “Look, DOJ has long-standing rules that you’re not supposed to do anything to interfere in an election,” he said. “I would say that that foiling an assassination attempt by a foreign government is not DOJ doing something to interfere with an election.” He said that the public had a right to know about the plot for the election and that their decision to bury it was an attempt to not help Trump on Election Day. President-elect Donald Trump’s new border czar, former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tom Homan, has a plan to secure the border and curtail illegal immigration. Trump announced Sunday that he was tapping Homan to secure the nation’s borders and end the illegal immigration crisis, a major focus of Trump’s campaign. Homan, who began his career as a Border Patrol agent, gained notoriety after he endorsing Trump’s plan to implement the largest deportation operation in American history. “People say, ‘How are you going to remove millions?’ The answer is: One at a time,” he explained. “No one’s off the table. If you’re in the country illegally in violation of immigration law, you are a target.” He reaffirmed his commitment to the deportation effort at the Republican National Convention, giving a speech where he told illegal aliens to “pack their bags” as attendees waved signs that read “Mass Deportation Now.” In a widely-shared clip, Homan explained to 60 Minutes host Cecilia Vega how illegal aliens can be deported without separating families. “Is there a way to carry out mass deportation without separating families?” the host asked Homan. “Of course there is, families can be deported together,” Homan responded. President Joe Biden reversed the policy on his first day in office. Under Biden, migrants were released into the United States and told to return to court for their asylum hearings, with some being given court dates as late as 2033. “The Remain in Mexico program was probably the biggest game changer in the Trump administration,” Homan explained in an interview with the Heritage Foundation. “What simply it is, if you’re going to claim asylum, you’re going to wait outside the country in Mexico until your hearing rather than being released into the United States.” He also explained the issue with the Biden administration’s approach. “Half of them won’t show up to court, even if they lose the case, they don’t leave,” Homan noted. “They’re just going to wait for the next giveaway, next amnesty, next DACA.” In addition to discussing ways to secure the border and return illegal aliens to their home countries, Homan has explained how amnesty proposals reward and encourage those who’ve illegally entered the United States. He pointed directly to President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as one way amnesty programs encourage mass illegal immigration. “We’ve sent the message to the world that if you hide out long enough, we will reward your illegal behavior. It’s no coincidence that family unit crossings surged shortly after DACA was created in 2012,” he wrote in his book “Defend the Border and Save Lives.” “In the past few years, thousands of parents brought children into this country illegally ‘through no fault of the child,’ and they will be our next DACA population if we don’t fix this problem once and for all.” Honan has also advocated for a system of mandatory E-Verify, a program that would prevent companies from hiring illegal aliens and, according to Homan, would “stem the flow of illegal alien labor” into the United States. The program, Homan contends, would help curtail illegal immigration by removing the economic incentives that motivate many migrants to attempt to illegally enter the United States. “This program would save tens of millions of dollars annually in enforcement operations by making it much more difficult to use fake identities,” Homan wrote of the E-Verify program, going on to say that it “is the best tool available, and currently prevents a significant amount of unauthorized employment.” “What’s frustrating to me … is that we even have some Republicans in Congress who don’t want to see E-Verify enacted,” Homan explained in 2020 in an interview with the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS.) “If they truly want to stop illegal employment they need a system of checks and balances, and E-Verify, with some moderate changes, could be effective.” Homan has also endorsed Trump’s plan to build a wall on the southern border and vouched for its effectiveness at impeding illegal crossings. “Every place they built a border barrier, illegal immigration went down, illegal drug problems went down without exception,” he explained while speaking with the Heritage Foundation. “We’ve always wanted a barrier for two reasons,” Homan said of Border Patrol personnel. “Number one, a barrier will help slow down those crossing illegally and second of all, for the most vulnerable, the women, the children, the family units, they can’t climb that wall, so that will funnel them to a place where there’s not a wall, which the border patrol could staff that end of that funnel and be able to respond to any humanitarian concerns, any health concerns,” he explained. Trump’s decision to name Homan as his “border czar” will mark a drastic shift from the approach of the Biden-Harris administration. More than 10 million people have crossed the border under the Biden-Harris administration, with an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways recorded since Biden was inaugurated in 2021. Trump also named immigration hawk Stephen Miller as his deputy chief of staff for policy, a sign that the president-elect is poised to enact the slate of hardline immigration policies he campaigned on.
