Over the past few months, I was asked multiple times by Staff of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability whether I am available to testify before the U.S. Congress on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs). As a result, I cleared my calendar for November 13, 2024 and prepared the following written statement. At the end, I was not called to testify before Congress and so I am posting below my intended statement. The Galileo Project under my leadership is about to release this week unprecedented results from commissioning data of its unique Observatory at Harvard University. Half a million objects were monitored on the sky and their appearance was analyzed by state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms. Are any of them UAPs and if so — what are their flight characteristics? Unfortunately, the congressional hearing chairs chose not to hear about these scientific results, nor about the scientific findings from our ocean expedition to the site of the first reported meteor from interstellar space. Stay tuned for the first extensive paper on the commissioning data from the first Galileo Project Observatory, to be posted publicly in the coming days. Here is my public statement. A collection of sensors in the Galileo Project Observatory at Harvard University monitors the entire sky in the infrared, optical, radio and audio. Distinguished Members of the House Oversight Committee, Cyber Subcommittee Chair Rep. Mace and National Security Subcommittee Chair Rep. Grothman, Thank you for holding this public hearing on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs). My name is Abraham (Avi) Loeb and I am the Baird Professor of Science and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at Harvard University, as well as the head of the Galileo Project. I chaired the Harvard Astronomy department for nine years and wrote more than a thousand scientific papers and eight books during my scientific career, which started with work on President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, also dubbed as “Star Wars.” In Washington DC, I served as a member of the President’s Council of Science and Technology and chaired the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies. Following the discovery of the first interstellar object (ISO), `Oumuamua, on October 19, 2017, I became interested in the scientific study of anomalous objects that visit us from outside the Solar System. The brightness of sunlight reflected off `Oumuamua changed by a factor of ten as this football-field-size object tumbled every eight hours. These extreme brightness variations implied that `Oumuamua was shaped like a pancake. This mysterious object accelerated away from the Sun without signs of cometary evaporation, and receded from Earth faster than any human-made rocket. A similar push by reflection of sunlight was detected three years later for another object, 2020 SO, which was verified to be a rocket booster from a 1966 launch by NASA. In addition, archival data from sensors aboard U.S. Government satellites indicated that on January 8, 2014, a meter-size object from outside the Solar System collided with Earth. The bolide, called IM1, was moving relative to the Sun faster than 95% of nearby stars and exhibited material strength beyond all documented meteorites in NASA’s CNEOS catalog. Its interstellar origin was confirmed by the U.S. Space Command in an official memorandum to NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, dated March 1, 2022. The anomalies displayed by these first two ISOs triggered my curiosity on whether any of them might have been manufactured technologically by an extraterrestrial (ET) NASA-like agency from a distant star. The puzzling appearance of unfamiliar objects close to Earth was admitted publicly by U.S. government officials. Reports on UAPs from the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Avril Haines, led in 2022 to the establishment of a new office under DNI and the Department of Defense, called the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). The official statement from AARO so far is: “To date, AARO has not discovered any verifiable information to substantiate claims that any programs regarding the possession or reverse-engineering of extraterrestrial materials have existed in the past or exist currently.” There is a world in which both ET-related witnesses and AARO officials are sincere. In that world, some UAPs are unrecognized by U.S. National Intelligence agencies but the vast majority of them are human-made. Retrieval and reverse engineering programs do exist. These programs study crash sites of vehicles produced by adversarial nations, and any recovered biologics are terrestrial in origin. The concentration of UAPs near nuclear or military assets is a natural byproduct of espionage. Some of the advanced technologies displayed by UAPs are unknown to U.S. corporations and labeled as anomalous just to hide the confusion about their terrestrial origin. In that world, the apparent vulnerability of the U.S. to national security threats explains why the Department of Defense would suppress disclosure of related details. Any public admission on the unknown terrestrial origin of UAPs would serve the military interests of adversarial nations who produced them. However, from a scientific perspective, even if one in a million objects in our sky is of extraterrestrial origin, its discovery will change the future of humanity. The U.S. government is not tasked to discover what lies outside the Solar System. This is my day job as an astrophysicist. Scientific quality data is key for clarifying whether some of these anomalous objects represent extraterrestrial technologies. Given the enormous interest in this possibility by taxpayers, federal funding agencies such as NSF, NASA, DOE or DoD, should allocate funds to related scientific research. We have been searching for ET radio signals for sixty-four years, but such searches are equivalent to waiting for a phone call. Alternatively, we could also search for packages in our back yard from a sender that might not be alive anymore. Additional work is needed to understand why `Oumuamua and IM1 appeared anomalous relative to familiar rocks from the Solar System. There are currently of order a few million IM1-like objects within the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. We could find out whether any of them is technological in origin using our best telescopes. To gain better knowledge, scientists must collect new high-quality data. The sky and our oceans are not classified. The Galileo Project is currently operating a new observatory at Harvard University and constructing two other observatories in other U.S. locations to monitor the entire sky continuously in the infrared, optical, radio and audio. We are about to release a new scientific paper, where we used machine-learning algorithms to check whether half a million objects in the sky are all of familiar origin. A year ago, I led a Galileo Project expedition to the Pacific Ocean which retrieved anomalous millimeter-size droplets from IM1’s crash site. Last month, we published a detailed peer-reviewed paper on these findings. We are currently planning a second expedition in summer 2025 to find larger pieces within the wreckage of IM1. Also in 2025, NSF’s Rubin Observatory in Chile will employ a 3.2 gigapixel camera to survey the entire southern sky every four days. Our scientists will be searching for `Oumuamua-like objects and UAPs in its data stream. A common question is: “can humanity handle the truth?” I regard this question as irrelevant, since it is always beneficial to know the truth about our cosmic neighborhood. Humanity went through a similar learning experience when Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei used scientific evidence to infer that we are not at the physical center of the Universe. Today, this knowledge allows NASA to reach other planets. We would never reach these planets if we assumed that they move around the Earth. On February 18, 2024, I gave a public lecture in Torun, Poland, the birth town of Nicolaus Copernicus, during an official celebration of 550 years to his birth. The title of my lecture was: “The Next Copernican Revolution,” which might imply that we are not at the intellectual center of the Universe. In that case, extraterrestrials might serve as better role models for a prosperous future than our elected officials. Two days earlier, I made a presentation about the scientific search for extraterrestrial technological civilizations at the 2024 Munich Security Conference. The back-to-back scheduling of these events signifies the two facets of UAPs and Unidentified Submerged Objects (USOs), which carry important implications for either national security or our place in the Universe. Here’s hoping that federal funding will be allocated to scientific research that will answer open questions on national security and extraterrestrials. On the night of the election, a member of the Trump team called me about an hour after polls had begun to close to tell me they saw signs of a win. A few hours later, a friend close to the Harris team called to tell me senior members of the campaign had begun advising senior Democrats they saw no path forward for Kamala Harris. A few hours later, Donald Trump crossed the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes to, again, be the President-Elect of the United States. On Halloween, despite some off-message moments at the end of the Trump campaign, I wrote, “Harris could easily win this election. It is tied. But her campaign never seems quite able to capture key moments and capitalize on them. Even with an American press corps doing everything it can to help her, Team Harris often seems unable to execute its strategy as competently as Team Trump. The press now tells us it could be a week or two before we know who has won. I am just not sure that will be the case.” Indeed. It was always the economy, stupid. The Harris campaign did not even make the best of a bad situation. Harris repeatedly refused to distance herself from President Joe Biden. She never found a decision he made that she disagreed with from the disastrous withdrawal out of Afghanistan to an overrun border. She picked Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate instead of Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania presumably because the latter was Jewish. Not only did she lose Pennsylvania but she still managed to alienate Arab American voters and Jewish voters together. Not since the Romans invaded the Levant have Arabs and Jews reacted in kind to a leader. Harris and Walz even did worse in Minnesota than Biden and Harris did four years ago. Walz even lost his home county to Trump. Walz was a uniquely bad pick. White progressives craved Pete Buttigieg. Walz was the next best thing. But Buttigieg never lied about his military service. Walz did. He lied about awards he had gotten. He lied about his time in China. He lied about little things. He lied about big things. The press corps insisted everyone focus on Trump’s lies. Harris’ first choice was only one of many bad choices. She avoided all but the most softball interviews until she did a “60 Minutes” interview that gave Republicans fodder. She became the first presidential candidate since Walter Mondale to avoid the Al Smith dinner in New York that raises money for Catholic Charities. Trump won the Catholic vote and Harris lost like Mondale. The Trump team’s Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita ran a tight ship with an irascible and unpredictable captain. They should get an award for doing the impossible. Harris combined a Biden team and Obama team that hated each other and hated any American that did not share their worldview. Trump has many faults, but he is a salesman who must know his audience to make a sale. Harris and her team know only the cloistered bubble of progressive elites, which mostly includes mentally neurotic white women and their husbands, wealthy gay men, and celebrities. Trump campaigned at UFC fights. Harris’ team kept running rumors Beyonce was coming, and when she finally did, she did not sing. The vice president, unburdened from what had been, became the living embodiment of the HBO series “Veep.” When it was all over, Trump not only won big but won broadly. He will go back to the White House with the broadest multiracial coalition any Republican has ever had. Through it all, Americans participated civilly. On Election Day, instead of firing bullets to change their government, they cast ballots. The day after, life returned to normal. Only the progressives who traded God for politics dressed in black to mourn. The God of all Creation smashed their idols before their eyes on live television as Americans rejected the atheist, mostly white, wealthy elite who think boys can become girls and Hispanic voters want more illegal immigrants. Now, the hard part begins for Republicans -- governing. But at least they get the chance.

The editor in chief of a once-highly respected science publication has issued an apology after descending into an expletive-laden meltdown on election night when former President Donald Trump emerged the winner.Last Tuesday night, Laura Helmuth, the editor in chief of Scientific American — the oldest continuously published magazine in American history — reportedly took to social media to unleash a series of invectives against those of her generation who voted for Trump."I apologize to younger voters that my Gen X is so full of f****** fascists," she wrote, according to screenshots shared by the Daily Mail."Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f*** them to the moon and back," she apparently added.Helmuth even apparently expressed shame for her Midwestern roots, decrying the entire state of Indiana as a haven for bigotry."Every four years I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect the people who stayed and are trying to make it less racist and sexist," she said, according to the Daily Mail."The moral arc of the universe isn't going to bend itself."As might be expected, these alleged comments did not go over well, and soon social-media users began to call for Helmuth's resignation."Wow you should fire your unhinged editor. She needs a long rest somewhere padded," one user commented, according to the Daily Mail."She should be stripped of membership for any science organization she’s a member of. Trust in science is tanking because of these egregious, pathetic, bigoted scientists," reportedly added another.'I am committed to civil communication and editorial objectivity.'By Friday, Helmuth had backpedaled, issuing an apology for allowing the "shock and confusion" of the election results to get the best of her."I made a series of offensive and inappropriate posts on my personal Bluesky account on election night, and I am sorry," Helmuth wrote in a statement, according to the New York Post. "I respect and value people across the political spectrum. These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results."Despite evidence to the contrary, Helmuth also insisted that she does have the necessary temperament to separate her personal views from her professional responsibilities. "I am committed to civil communication and editorial objectivity," she said.However, Scientific American has hardly steered clear of political matters under her leadership. In 2020, the same year Helmuth took the reins as editor in chief, the outlet broke a nearly 200-year-old tradition of officially remaining above the political fray and endorsed Joe Biden for president. The outlet likewise endorsed Kamala Harris for president in 2024.Perhaps even more abhorrent, Scientific American has seemingly embraced junk science, especially regarding gender. In April, it republished an interview in which a man posing as a woman accused those who oppose gender ideology of peddling "misinformation" and perpetrating "epistemological violence," as Blaze News previously reported.The outlet also denied the possibility that wealthy elites profited from the pandemic, stressed the COVID-19 vaccine was safe, and declared the lab-leak theory regarding COVID-19 "false." Scientific American even wasted ink, time, and money on multiple articles claiming that math, the NFL, and fighting obesity are racist.In a post following the election, Helmuth also indicated that others at the outlet were having similar difficulty accepting the outcome, allegedly posting, "Any advice on what workplaces can do to help people who are devastated by the election? Thanks so much."Despite an obviously leftward lurch at the outlet, Helmuth claimed in her Friday statement that her offensive insults of Trump supporters "of course do not reflect the position of Scientific American or my colleagues."Scientific American did not respond to Blaze News' request for comment.Like Blaze News? An armed intruder broke into a Florida home after midnight Sunday — but the homeowner's adult son also had a gun and fatally shot the intruder.The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said it received a call at 12:23 a.m. regarding an armed residential burglary in the 3000 block of Double D Ranch Trail in Ruskin. Ruskin is on the shore of Tampa Bay and is about a half hour south of the city of Tampa.'This is a happy ending! A significant number of non-white voters supported Donald Trump for president, a fact that hip-hop radio host Charlemagne tha God appeared shocked to learn over the weekend.During an interview on ABC News' "This Week," anchor Jonathan Karl asked Charlemagne — a stalwart Kamala Harris surrogate whose real name is Larry McKelvey — about the "demographics" of Trump's victoryWhat followed was a viral exchange in which McKelvey had a difficult time believing that a large number of non-white voters helped send Trump back to the White House."Trump got one out of every three voters of color," Karl told McKelvey."No," the radio host responded."Yeah — 33%," Karl affirmed."Really?!" McKelvey asked again."Yeah," Karl responded."When you say color, you mean like black, brown — everything?!" McKelvey asked, to which Karl responded by nodding his head in affirmation. To his credit and despite his shock, McKelvey appeared to understand exactly why those non-white voters supported Trump and hand-delivered Harris a humiliating loss, citing identity politics, the economy, and immigration."I think some of this is a backlash to race and gender and identity politics. But man, most people, they just care about keeping food on they table and keeping a roof over their head. And I think sometimes people forget about that," he said. In another moment of liberal self-awareness, McKelvey added that he believes the Democratic Party "forgot" about the working class — but Trump did not.Later in the interview, Karl asked McKelvey why he thinks Trump performed well in liberal strongholds like Chicago and New York City."Because of dinner-table issues. Yo, it's literally that simple. Everyday people wake up, and all they want to do is have more money in their pocket, and they want to feel safe. I don't care if you're black, white, gay, straight, whatever religion you are, those are the two things that you're thinking about every day," McKelvey responded.
