Apple and Hey squash another App Store beef

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple has accepted Hey’s new calendar app‚ according to 37signals co-owner David Heinemeier Hansson (aka DHH)‚ ending a brief but familiar App Store battle between the two companies. Apple rejected the calendar app last week‚ arguing that it didn’t do anything if you don’t subscribe to a Hey account — which is the same line of argument that led Apple to initially reject Hey’s email app in 2020. Hey had planned to launch the calendar app on January 2nd‚ but after learning of the rejection on January 5th‚ the company scrambled to update the app and resubmit it to better meet Apple’s guidelines. On Monday‚ DHH said that the revised version of the calendar app would let you look through Apple history on the calendar if you don’t have an... Continue reading…

Asus’ new laptop has two screens and a removable keyboard

The Asus Zenbook Duo with its two 14-inch displays in Dual Screen mode. Asus is back with another Zenbook Duo‚ the latest device in its range of dual-screened laptops. But rather than including a small secondary display above this laptop’s keyboard like previous Duos‚ the revamped version for 2024 has two equally sized 14-inch screens. They’re both OLED‚ with resolutions of up to 2880 x 1800‚ aspect ratios of 16:10‚ and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. Between them‚ they offer a total of 19.8 inches of usable screen real estate. It’s a similar approach to the one Lenovo took with last year’s dual-screen Yoga Book 9i‚ albeit with a couple of tweaks. Like Lenovo‚ Asus gives you a choice of typing on the lower touchscreen via a virtual keyboard or by using a detachable physical Bluetooth keyboard. But what’s... Continue reading…

Asus targets Apple’s Vision Pro (with M2) with the AirVision M1

Pipe in content over DisplayPort and watch it appear in front of your eyes. | Image: Asus Asus has screens aplenty at this year’s CES‚ including one for your face. The AirVision M1 is a pair of glasses housing a wearable display‚ which shows content from a connected phone or computer. The glasses include a 1080p Micro OLED display with a 57-degree vertical perspective field of view‚ making it a sizable screen in front of your eyeballs. The AirVision M1 might sound familiar‚ even beyond the fact that it sounds like an Apple product in three different ways. TCL makes similar glasses: the NXTWear S and more recent S Plus. Like NXTWear‚ Asus’ glasses offer built-in speakers and use a wired connection to pipe content to the screen over DisplayPort. But the AirVision adds a couple of interesting new features: There’s a touchpad... Continue reading…

Asus made a big portable OLED monitor you can fold in half

The ZenScreen Fold OLED monitor propped up above a laptop. | Image: Asus If you’re a multitasker who wishes you could carry around a second screen without being weighed down‚ soon‚ you might be able to. At CES this week‚ Asus introduced its first foldable OLED monitor‚ designed to be lugged around without breaking your back or bag. Positioned as a productivity tool for working on the go‚ Asus’ ZenScreen Fold OLED monitor features a 17.3-inch screen that could function well as a second display. At the same time‚ though‚ it conveniently folds up like a book for easy storage‚ with a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5-like waterdrop-style hinge to reduce the visibility of the screen crease. And with a profile as thin as 9.7mm when unfolded‚ it can slip into a bag fairly easily. The whole package weighs 2.65 pounds‚ which... Continue reading…

Google is making your smart devices play nicer together

Faster pairing is caring. | Image: Google Modern digital life comes with a great many gadgets — and those gadgets are often loath to work together. Nowhere is that more apparent than the OLED-paneled halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES‚ where Google is announcing some small efforts to get the wide constellation of gadgets in its ecosystem talking to each other a little more easily. Android’s AirDrop-like sharing feature is combining forces with Samsung‚ LG smart TVs are getting smart home updates‚ and TikTok is coming to Chromecast‚ among other things. We were tipped off late last year that one of these features was coming‚ but it’s official now: Android’s Nearby Share will adopt the same name as Samsung’s sharing protocol and become Quick Share. That’s welcome... Continue reading…

Google Chrome is coming to your car

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Google is releasing some new features for people to use Android Auto phone mirroring in their cars as well as for those who drive cars with Google’s native Android software. Electric vehicle owners will soon be able to share real-time battery information with Google Maps through Android Auto‚ allowing them to see an estimate of how much battery capacity will be left when arriving at a destination. This feature was already available to cars with Google built-in and now will be available to Android Auto users‚ starting with the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning “in the coming months.” Other EVs will be eligible in the near future. People who own cars with native Google apps‚ also known as “Google built-in‚” will... Continue reading…

The Last of Us casts Kaitlyn Dever as Abby

Photo by Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images Kaitlyn Dever will officially take on the role of Abby in the highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us‚ HBO announced on Tuesday. Rumors about Dever’s role as Abby in the video game adaptation began circulating late last year. Abby is one of the major characters in The Last of Us Part II‚ the PlayStation game from which the second season will draw its story‚ and is a rival to protagonist Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey). While Dever has starred in shows like Last Man Standing and Justified‚ her most recent performance as the main character in Hulu’s sci-fi flick No One Will Save You stands out‚ as her character remained silent for nearly the entire movie. Kaitlyn Dever has joined the cast of the HBO Original series #TheLastofUs... Continue reading…

Samsung teases Galaxy S24 AI with the help of Marvel’s Doctor Strange

CES 2024 is in full swing in Las Vegas‚ but that's not the only big tech attraction of the start of the year. Samsung already announced its first Unpacked press conference of 2024‚ where it'll unveil the Galaxy S24 series. According to Samsung's teasers‚ the three phones should feature plenty of new Galaxy AI tricks. Samsung also opened preorder registrations that can net you an additional $50 credit if you reserve one of the three Galaxy S24 models. Since the Galaxy S24 Unpacked event is so close to CES this year‚ Samsung went for a different marketing trick to drive buzz around the device. Samsung teamed up with Marvel to tease the Galaxy AI features of its next-gen phones over at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Google Maps can now display real-time battery information in your EV

Google Maps can now display real-time battery information in your EV

Google Maps is obviously the most popular mapping service in the world‚ but both Google and Apple have had an issue with electric vehicle makers like Tesla and Rivian. Both of those companies favor running their own in-house software to power their driving experiences over Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto experiences. The benefit of doing that‚ for those brands‚ is that they can more closely integrate the driving and charging experience in the vehicle (amongst a mile-long list of other benefits). So‚ up until now‚ running something like Google Maps in an EV has been worse than running the car's built-in mapping system since Google Maps couldn't interface with the vehicle's battery information. Up until now is the most important part of that sentence. Continue reading... The post Google Maps can now display real-time battery information in your EV appeared first on BGR.
