An Overdose Antidote Goes Viral

Matt Pfisterer was in his office at a public library in Middletown‚ New York‚ when a colleague in the second-floor children’s room called to tell him that someone was sunbathing on the lawn outside.  This sounded odd to Pfisterer‚ who suspected it might be a medical situation. He headed outside‚ bringing along a security officer. In the grass‚ they found a woman drifting in and out of consciousness. Ants were crawling on her shirt. They ran inside‚ had someone call 911 and grabbed a naloxone kit. Pfisterer remembers his hands shaking as he got the medication ready and sprayed it into her nose. About 30 seconds later‚ she sat up. The timing of the episode‚ which took place in 2016 at the Middletown Thrall Library‚ was fortuitous. Just three weeks earlier‚ a social services provider had offered a community training in administering naloxone‚ a drug that rapidly reverses opioid overdoses. Pfisterer‚ his assistant‚ and multiple security guards signed up. In recent years‚ as the nationwide opioid crisis had hit their small community 50 miles northwest of New York City‚ they had found themselves calling emergency responders several times to help overdosing patrons. “Before the general news is out‚ people in libraries know what’s going on‚” says Pfisterer‚ director of the Thrall Public Library District. “They’re on the street‚ right? They’ve got their ear to the ground.” Matt Pfisterer‚ director of the Thrall Public Library District in Middletown‚ New York‚ offers naloxone training to his staff. Credit: David Degner The opioid crisis has tightened its grip on communities across America. More than 80‚000 people in the US died of overdoses involving opioids in 2022 — almost quadruple the total in 2010. In response‚ people like Pfisterer are equipping themselves with the overdose-reversing drug naloxone with help from local governments and community-based organizations. The approach is turning high school students‚ transit workers and music festival staff into de facto first responders. Efforts are building to tackle opioid addiction before it begins‚ and telemedicine policies from the COVID-19 pandemic make it easier for people to get treatment. But experts say there’s still a long way to go before the crisis subsides. In the meantime‚ naloxone is becoming a key tool for reducing stigma and saving lives. “We all have loved ones‚ family members‚ friends who may be experiencing problems with drug use‚” says Magdalena Cerdá‚ director of the Center for Opioid Epidemiology and Policy at New York University Grossman School of Medicine‚ “so having naloxone readily available to respond is important.”  The opioid crisis has been mounting since the 1990s‚ when millions of patients began receiving prescriptions for powerful painkillers like OxyContin that had just come on the market. Over time‚ some people developed substance use disorders and turned to street drugs‚ particularly heroin‚ which was often cheaper than pills. Then‚ around the mid-2010s‚ a synthetic opioid started to spread: illicit fentanyl‚ easier to produce than heroin and up to 50 times more potent‚ making it much easier for people to accidentally take too much. What’s more‚ because fentanyl is cheap to make‚ it’s often mixed into other drugs‚ such as heroin or cocaine‚ or pressed into counterfeit pills meant to look like prescription medications. Fake pills are especially dangerous for an increasing number of people self-medicating with drugs bought through social media. From mid-2019 through 2021‚ 84 percent of adolescent overdose deaths involved illicit fentanyl and 25 percent involved fake pills‚ according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People can overdose on fentanyl without even knowing they’re taking it. This has led to a particularly dangerous moment. “The main challenge is the lethality of the drug supply that is leading to an unprecedented number of people dying from overdoses‚” says Cerdá.   The post An Overdose Antidote Goes Viral appeared first on Reasons to be Cheerful.

Cause of Climate Change? It Isn’t Carbon Dioxide‚ Expert Says

The scientific community doesn’t all agree on the core causes of climate change‚ and according to climate expert Willie Soon‚ humanity should look beyond Earth to find the source. The Earth’s rotation around the sun affects the planet’s temperature‚ says Soon‚ a visiting fellow on the Science Advisory Committee of the Center for Energy‚ Climate‚ and Environment at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)  Glaciers‚ for example‚ “melted away because the sun started to get … brighter and provided more solar energy to the climate system‚” according to Soon.  Throughout his career‚ Soon‚ a former researcher with the Center for Astrophysics-Harvard &; Smithsonian‚ says he has sought to pursue the facts surrounding shifts in the climate because “science is not about belief.” “Science is about data‚” he said.  Many people think that it is “rising carbon dioxide that is the main factor … that affects climate change‚ and that is wholly untrue‚” Soon says. “That is such a distorted view that I think it needs to be corrected.”  Soon joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” for part two of a three-part series discussing climate change. In part one‚ expert David Legates explained the history of climate change.  On today’s show‚ Soon explains why he thinks the sun is the source of the changing climate and how the sun affects the Earth’s cycles of warming and cooling. Jesus Is the Greatest News – Senior Living – January 4

Jesus Is the Greatest News Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel‚ praising God and saying‚ “Glory to God in the highest‚ and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” —Luke 2:13-14 In the year 1809‚ the international scene was tumultuous. Napoleon was sweeping through Austria and blood was flowing freely. Nobody was thinking about babies‚ but rather people were concerned with the wars and tyranny that existed. However‚ the world was overlooking some very significant births during that time. That year many notable people were born: William Gladstone‚ destined to become one of England’s finest statesmen; Alfred Tennyson‚ born to an obscure minister and his wife‚ greatly affect the world of literacy; Oliver Wendell Holmes‚ born in Cambridge‚ Massachusetts; Edgar Allan Poe‚ who began his eventful‚ yet tragic‚ life in Boston; Charles Robert Darwin‚ born to a physician and his wife; and Abraham Lincoln‚ born in a rugged log cabin in Hardin County‚ Kentucky. If journalism and news broadcasts had existed in 1809‚ these words might have been heard: “The destiny of the world is being shaped on an Austrian battlefield today.” But in reality‚ history was being shaped in the cradles of Europe and America. Similarly when Jesus was born‚ taxation was the big news. But a young Jewish virgin woman cradled the biggest news of all: the birth of the Savior. Even today‚ sometimes the biggest news is the latest product to buy at Christmas‚ the best vacation spot during the holidays‚ or the idolizing of icons that have become great symbols over the years during the season. You must remember that the greatest news of all was the birth of Jesus Christ and His death‚ burial‚ and resurrection years later. Jesus is the greatest news you could share with anyone this season. PRAYER CHALLENGE: Ask God to give you the chance to share the Good News of His Son this season with friends‚ family‚ and acquaintances who don’t know Him as their Savior.  Visit the Senior Living Ministries website The post Jesus Is the Greatest News – Senior Living – January 4 appeared first on GodUpdates.

A Prayer When Change Seems Impossible – Your Daily Prayer – January 4

A Prayer for When Change Seems ImpossibleBy Ashley Moore "By his divine power‚ God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him‚ the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence." – 2 Peter 1:3‚ NLT Something about transitioning to a new year drives people to reflect on the past and ponder ways to improve the future. We see it in businesses as they examine their last quarter and make new goals for the next four quarters. Family's examine their rhythms and commitments and make decisions about what they want to keep or change moving forward. And people personally inspect their health and fitness levels and make plans for personal growth for the upcoming year.  What typically happens next‚ though‚ can be rather disappointing. We start strong with the momentum of transition and ride the high of new habits and routines. But it doesn't take long before employees get swamped maintaining rather than advancing the business‚ the family calendar gets overtaken by the kid's sports and church commitments‚ and our sneakers and dumbbells begin to collect dust.  Lasting change can feel impossible sometimes‚ can't it? It only adds to our discouragement when we fail to meet our goals‚ keep our promises‚ or honor our commitments.  Change can begin to seem futile. This is a dangerous mindset for the believer. When we doubt that change is possible‚ we can grow cynical. Our cynicism can breed hopelessness about our situations and whether others will ever be capable of making the greatest change–turning from their sin and following Jesus. We fall prey to a lie that true and lasting change depends only on our ability‚ convincing ourselves we aren't capable. Have you ever been there? This is why I have so much love for Peter's words from our key verse. Peter lived the reality of this human experience‚ this tension of desiring change and wanting to live a fruitful life but not quite hitting the mark. To put it the way Jesus said in another reminder to our friend Peter‚ our spirits are willing‚ but our flesh is oh so weak (Matthew 26:41).  Peter was this headstrong disciple who was utterly convinced he was going to prevent Christ from being crucified (Matthew 16:22). Jesus‚ coincidentally‚ called him Satan and rebuked him for this (Matthew 16:23). He was also the disciple who claimed to Jesus that if everyone else abandoned him‚ he would be willing to go to prison and die for him (John 22:33-34). Still not quite understanding Jesus' plan for salvation in an ill-fitting attempt to protect Jesus‚ Peter sliced off the ear of one of the High Priest's servants (John 18:10). Finally‚ as Christ was taken to be crucified‚ just as he said he would never do‚ Peter denied knowing Jesus three times (Luke 22:57-60). But‚ we see from his writings in 2 Peter that people can change. Peter finally acknowledged and accepted that the power to change and live anything that remotely resembles a Christ-like life comes from God's divine power‚ not our own.  And we need that reminder as we seek to make changes in the new year‚ too. Our strength‚ grit‚ and sheer will won't be enough to make lasting changes. God has given us everything we need to live a changed life‚ a life that is pleasing to Him. And we received this by coming to know Him. By the power of the Holy Spirit‚ change‚ true change that brings glory to God‚ is possible.  Let's pray: Dear Lord‚Thank you for giving your people a desire to make positive changes. We know every good thing about us is a gift from you. I pray that as we look to make changes in the new year‚ we would do so from a heart motivation of bringing glory to you. Lord‚ forgive us when that is not our motivation. But Lord‚ we also pray that as we seek to change‚ we would remember and depend on your spirit for power and not the power of our fleshly‚ faulty self-will. Lord‚ thank you that you've equipped us with everything we need to live a godly life this year and forever! In Jesus' name‚ amen.
