Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, thousands of African students have followed the influx of refugees to various European countries. Many now say they do not want to return to their home countries.

An estimated 23,000 Africans were studying at Ukrainian universities and other institutions when the war broke out. These accounted for about a third of the total number of foreign students in the country, which were mainly concentrated in Kharkiv, Lviv and Kyiv.

One of these is the Algerian Israa Aelle, who says that Ukraine was an attractive country to study in when visas were easy to obtain and fees were low.

- I do not want to go back to Algeria, he says to French Le Figaro.

According to the newspaper, many other students who fled Ukraine are not interested in returning home, despite the fact that countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Congo are quickly finding ways to bring their citizens home.

Many have instead applied to countries such as France to find accommodation and want to continue their studies in Western European educational institutions

Ten of the Ukrainian refugees who last week alerted that Africans had entered their accommodation in Örebro have been moved to a converted garage. Samnytt can tell you that today. A total of eight adult women and two young people live in the garage, which is divided into two rooms, has a kitchenette and shower area, but is cold and lacks hot water. However, the Ukrainian women do not want to complain about the new accommodation.

On Saturday, Samnytt wrote about how foreign men entered Örebro City Hostel, where about 60 Ukrainian refugee women and children live.

The incident caused concern among Ukrainian women. One of them even expressed regret that she had chosen to travel to Sweden. She said that despite the war, she felt safer at home in Ukraine than in Sweden.

The Swedish Migration Agency has dismissed the incident as a "misunderstanding" where the men were looking for friends who previously lived at the hostel, and who they thought lived there.

Forced to move
Among other things, the Ukrainians suggested that the hostel should change the door code to the front door, to make it more difficult for unauthorized persons to enter. But after talking to the media about the incident, they were told that many of them would not be allowed to stay at the hostel.

- They came and told us that half of the rooms would be emptied, one of the women told Samnytt before the move.

- At first we were happy and thought we would get a more permanent home. Then they told us that the new accommodation is also temporary, but that our rooms are needed for new refugees.

When Samnytt talked to her about the move, she wondered about the point of moving from one temporary residence to another.

- Why do they not instead move the new refugees to the place where they intend to move us? she asked herself.

Moved to garage
On Monday morning, the moving load went on for eight Ukrainian women and two children. In the end, their new home was kept secret.

Now Samnytt can reveal that the ten Ukrainian refugees have been moved into a converted garage in Örebro. The garage is divided into two rooms, is partly connected to the basement of the house, and has a kitchenette and a small bathroom with shower. It has no real heating and lacks hot water.

Samnytt has been in contact with Örebro municipality and, among other things, requested building permit applications and drawings for the house and garage. It is unclear whether the garage can be used as a separate home.

The owner wanted to expand and remodel the garage in 2017, and then also wanted to build a bathroom, but according to an administrator at the municipality, his building permit application was rejected.

Run by a criminal
Both Örebro City Vandrarhem and the property to which the garage belongs are owned by different companies in the same group of companies. Behind the companies is a 43-year-old Örebro resident who has been convicted of crime several times.

As recently as last year, the 43-year-old was sentenced by the Court of Appeal to six months in prison for aggravated smuggling. He already had seven sections in the criminal record when he was convicted of that crime.

The 43-year-old has previously been convicted of, among other things, aggravated domestic violence and vandalism since he broke into a former girlfriend's home at night, drunk and armed with a shovel as a shelter.

He himself stated that he did this because the former girlfriend met a new man, and that he therefore wanted to "talk to her".

Samnytt has spoken with the manager of the hostel, who is cohabiting with the criminal 43-year-old. She does not want to answer questions.

Do not know about agreements
Samnytt has been in contact with the Swedish Migration Board to get more information. The authority's procurement and purchasing unit is not aware that there is to be an agreement between the Swedish Migration Board and any of the criminal 43-year-old's various companies.

We have contacted the Swedish Migration Agency's press service to ask them to explain why ten Ukrainian refugees have been moved to a garage owned by a criminal. We have not yet received an answer.

We also talked to one of the Ukrainian women who now lives in the garage. She wants to remain anonymous, tries to be optimistic and says that they have been promised heat, hot water and the internet.

She also does not want to complain about the accommodation she has received.

- I am a guest in this country and I do not want any problems, the woman says to Samnytt.
