Buried 3,000-Year-old Spade is One of the Oldest Wooden Tools Ever Found in UK

Archaeologists have unearthed a 3,000-year-old spade, one of the oldest and most complete wooden tools ever discovered in the UK. The spade was discovered during archaeological excavations in Dorset, England, by Wessex Archaeology working on the Moors-at-Arne project at Poole Harbour along the south-east coast. The oak spade dates back to the Bronze Age and […] The post Buried 3,000-Year-old Spade is One of the Oldest Wooden Tools Ever Found in UK appeared first on Good News Network.

After Voting Controversies, What Do Pennsylvania Voters Think of Election Security?

After Voting Controversies, What Do Pennsylvania Voters Think of Election Security?

WEXFORD, Pa.—After a string of recent voting-related controversies in Pennsylvania, one reason that Pittsburgh resident Joseph Costa dropped off his absentee ballot at a polling station Thursday is because he doesn’t trust the process. “It’s convenient. I don’t like it this way. But to be honest, I don’t trust the system,” Costa told The Daily Signal outside the North Park Ice Rink in Wexford, an Allegheny County polling site.  “The level of corruption in voting drives me crazy,” he said. “It’s bad to be leery of your own state. But it’s far different from 2020. I think it’s better.” State prosecutors in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County are investigating two batches of about 2,500 voter registration forms that may include several hundred fraudulent forms. York County officials also are investigating potential voter registration fraud.  Meanwhile, Erie County is mired in a flap involving duplicate absentee ballots sent to election offices as well as voters who say they didn’t get their ballots. In addition, a judge recently ordered Bucks County, a battleground county near Philadelphia, to extend its deadline for early voting to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, after Donald Trump’s presidential campaign sued. The campaign alleged that the county had turned away voters who were in line to vote before 5 p.m. Tuesday, when in-person early voting ended. Pennsylvania has an overall score of 62 on The Heritage Foundation’s Election Integrity Scorecard and ties with Arizona and Rhode Island for the ranking of 24.  The Keystone State scores the maximum four points for restricting the controversial process of ballot harvesting and does reasonably well on the accuracy of voter rolls with a score of 18 out of 28.  Pennsylvania also maages to score 13 out of 21 points for absentee ballot management. The state restricted use of private dollars to pay for election administration.  Pennsylvania—a state that Trump carried in 2016 and Joe Biden carried in 2020—is among the most fiercely contested states in the country. Trump and Harris virtually tied in the RealClearPolitics average, with the former president holding a nominal 0.4% lead. At least four polls conducted during October showed the state was tied.  Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt, a Republican appointed by Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, expressed confidence in the state’s system Oct. 25 after visiting all 67 counties.  “These visits were a sign of that commitment and an opportunity to learn how the [Pennsylvania] Department of State can best assist them in their important work,” Schmidt said in a public statement. “From Wayne to Allegheny, every county faces unique challenges. One of the reasons I have such confidence in the security and accuracy of Pennsylvania’s elections is I have seen firsthand the integrity and professionalism of these local officials.” Several Pennsylvania voters told The Daily Signal that they are concerned about election integrity, but expect matters to be better this time than four years ago.  Jarrett Dowling, 26, of Ross Township, is a Kamala Harris supporter who says she is more concerned about what Republicans will do after the election.  “Voter suppression is a problem. In Virginia, Republicans purged people from the voter rolls and the conservative Supreme Court said that was a good thing,” Dowling told The Daily Signal. “Conservative people talk about election integrity, but there is no real evidence anything bad happened in 2020.” The U.S. Supreme Court sided Wednesday with Virginia’s decision to remove the names of 1,600 noncitizens from the voter rolls, overturning a lower court ruling siding with the Biden-Harris administration’s Justice Department.  There is more focus on election security this year, Ross Township resident Charles Schrankel said, noting that the Republican National Committee has filed over 100 lawsuits.  “I’m concerned, but not overly worried. I don’t think fraud will be a difference-maker,” Schrankel told The Daily Signal. Kersten Rovee of Ohio Township, asserted: “I don’t have concerns about the process. I am concerned about what might transpire after the election.” Lucas Guthrie, a resident of Beaver County, said that because states run elections, that will prevent rigged contests.  “I think the election will be secure,” Guthrie told The Daily Signal. “Every state runs their own election. It’s not centralized. That helps.”  In Oregon and Washington, however, arsonists attempted to burn ballots deposited in drop boxes by voters, damaging hundreds, CNN reported. These incidents encouraged Ashton Jersey, a resident of Beaver, to drop off her absentee ballot in person.  “I brought my ballot in because I’m nervous about what might happen after the election,” Jersey told The Daily Signal. “I don’t want it to be burned or destroyed.” Several other voters wanted to comment but asked to give only their first names, citing polarized politics, job security, and personal safety concerns if others knew how they voted.   Mike, a resident of Franklin Park, had a different view of the Virginia court case about noncitizen voters.  “In Virginia, you see that 1,600 noncitizens were registered to vote,” he said. “I don’t know of any other country in the world that allows noncitizens to vote in their elections. A Chinese national voted in Michigan. There should be a way to prove you are a U.S. citizen.” Authorities charged a Chinese national with casting an illegal vote in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The vote is irretrievable and reportedly will be counted.   “There is a lot of controversy over the safety of the election. I think both sides prefer to get their votes in early,” Athena, 29, of Pittsburgh, told The Daily Signal after dropping off her ballot.  “It’s wild that I go in there and just say who I am and they take my ballot with no ID,” she added. “It’s an issue, for sure.” Joe, a resident of McCandless, said that “in a country of 350 million, there is always an election integrity issue.” “That’s why every state holds its own election,” he said. “It would make it difficult to rig a multistate election. But there are ways to manipulate the election. Something might be legal, but not moral.”  The post After Voting Controversies, What Do Pennsylvania Voters Think of Election Security? appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Could Uranus’s Icy Moon Miranda Harbor a Hidden Ocean — and Life?

A recent study hints at an exciting possibility: Uranus’s moon Miranda might host a hidden ocean beneath its icy crust, potentially making it suitable for life. Tom Nordheim from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and his team offer new insights into Miranda’s potential ocean. Back in 1986, NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft captured close-up images of Miranda, revealing a strange, patchwork landscape of deep grooves, towering cliffs, and odd trapezoidal regions. These features hinted at a unique geological history. Scientists now think Miranda’s varied surface may be linked to tidal forces generated by gravitational interactions with other Uranian moons. Miranda orbits Uranus, a unique planet tilted nearly sideways, resulting in extreme seasons: 42 years of daylight followed by 42 years of darkness at each pole. Uranus’s atmosphere, rich in icy materials like methane, gives the planet its blue-green hue, and the planet hosts at least 27 moons, including Miranda. Uranus and its major moons: Puck, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. Nordheim’s team, including Caleb Strom from the University of North Dakota and Alex Patthoff from the Planetary Science Institute, analyzed old Voyager images and used computer modeling to investigate Miranda’s past. Their findings suggest that around 100 to 500 million years ago, a 62-mile-deep ocean might have existed beneath Miranda’s frozen crust, which is about 19 miles thick. Surprisingly, Miranda’s ocean could have remained warm enough to stay liquid due to “orbital resonance” – gravitational forces causing frictional heating. This phenomenon is also observed on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, where active geysers hint at a subsurface ocean. Although Miranda’s ocean may have thinned, it’s likely not completely frozen. This discovery raises the possibility that Miranda could support life, but more data is needed to confirm the existence of its ocean. To fully explore Miranda’s potential, scientists hope for future missions to Uranus. This small, icy moon could hold secrets to understanding ocean worlds and the potential for extraterrestrial life. Tuesday’s election will be a referendum on American capitalism

Will Joe Biden succeed in undermining the pillars of American capitalism? The Wall Street Journal reported on Oct. 13 that the November election could decide whether Biden’s push to break up American companies simply for being “big” will succeed in the long run.The Journal is correct. This election isn’t just a referendum on what the Biden-Harris administration has done to entrepreneurs over the past four years; it’s also a vote on the future of America’s economy. Another four years of the status quo could turn Biden’s unconventional policies into economic and legal precedents, causing lasting damage.Once-successful companies are closing stores and laying off workers due to the unprecedented anti-business environment fostered by this White House. This issue centers on how, after taking office, Biden and Harris ensured the confirmation of Lina Khan, a progressive favorite, to lead the Federal Trade Commission. Khan quickly reversed 40 years of consensus on antitrust policy by overturning the consumer welfare standard, which had limited government intervention in the economy to cases where consumers faced harm. The Department of Justice, which shares antitrust enforcement with the FTC, soon followed her lead.Under the Biden-Harris administration’s aggressive approach to antitrust, businesses can now be regulated, broken up, or even dissolved for reasons determined by the White House, regardless of whether they lower consumer prices or increase competition. Over the past four years, this approach has led to challenges against companies for simply being “too big.”The good news is that the Biden-Harris administration has lost nearly every corporate challenge it initiated, as courts recognize its anti-capitalism agenda lacks legal grounding and is politically motivated. However, these challenges have still cost thousands of jobs and discouraged businesses from pursuing innovation. When the Biden-Harris administration blocked mergers like Spirit Airlines-JetBlue and Roomba-Amazon, the results were disastrous. Roomba lost jobs and declared bankruptcy, while Spirit now teeters on insolvency due to the administration’s actions.Despite these failures, Biden and Harris continue their push, as shown by a late September lawsuit against Visa.In its latest campaign against capitalism, the Biden-Harris administration’s antitrust cops claim Visa’s debit market is an unchecked monopoly raising consumer prices. But this is far from true. Consumers have a wide range of choices, not only with other debit cards but also through peer-to-peer payment networks like Apple Pay, Cash App, and Venmo.Payment volumes and the number of competitors in this space continue to rise steadily. In a capitalist economy, being a popular choice among consumers isn’t a crime, but the administration is acting as if it is.By overturning the consumer welfare standard, the Biden-Harris administration has created the worst business climate since the Carter era. Once-successful companies — even large chains like 7-Eleven and Walgreens — are closing stores and laying off workers due to the unprecedented anti-business environment fostered by this White House. With the November election now in clear view, voters face a crucial decision. The Wall Street Journal noted that “it is a near certainty that [Khan’s] authority will end if Donald Trump wins the presidency, as many in the GOP favor more latitude for mergers and view Khan as too tough on business.”Voters must make the right choice, as the continuation of this anti-business agenda could lead to incalculable long-term consequences for the free market. As voters stand at this crossroads, the choice is clear. Will they back a government that prioritizes regulation over innovation, or will they support policies that encourage free markets and allow businesses to thrive? The costs of staying the current course are evident — job losses, higher prices, and economic stagnation. A change in direction, however, could promise economic freedom, growth, and prosperity. We’ll have the answer soon, but one thing is clear: The current path of overregulation and government interference is unsustainable. It’s time to empower businesses, foster competition, and create an environment where innovation can flourish for all Americans.Let’s hope voters agree.

Space roguelike Breachway adds a new ship soon as it ramps up build variety

Space roguelike Breachway is very much my type of strategy game. It has all the satisfying ship-building elements I love from games like No Man’s Sky and Starfield. But instead of forcing me to pootle around the stars myself, it lets me jump from location to location, engaging in interesting decision making and tactical combat reminiscent of the likes of the fantastic FTL. Launched into early access on Steam in September, user reviews are already positive, and now developer Edgeflow Studio details what’s coming during November. GTA 6 fans are once again looking to the Moon, and this time I believe them

GTA 6 cannot come soon enough. Since last year's reveal trailer, the internet has been aflame with analysis, theories, and conjecture. Will social media play a part in the story? Just who are Lucia and Jason? And why on Earth does everyone keep going crazy over phases of the Moon? Until we get our hands on the next Grand Theft Auto I'm afraid a lot of these questions will go unanswered. Still, the wait hasn't stopped fans from yet again going overboard with theories. This time, though, I'm inclined to believe them.
