Spirit of the Waters: Investigating the Creature of Lake Okanagan

Column SFF Bestiary Spirit of the Waters: Investigating the Creature of Lake Okanagan By Judith Tarr | Published on December 9, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share Eli Watson and Jason Hewlett’s Kickstarter project has just recently been released into the world. Their investigation of Lake Okanagan’s Ogopogo is just about as up to the minute as you can get in the world of film. It documents an expedition to the lake in May of 2023, and takes a somewhat different direction than the monster documentaries I’ve written about through the chapters of the Bestiary. Mostly these documentaries give us some history, interview witnesses, speculate as to what the creature might be, and try various experiments to prove or disprove its existence. Watson and Hewlett do the history and the interviews and show us some of the evidence, including a brand-new viral photo taken in October 2022. They have opinions as to what the monster is or isn’t. There are no cool tools. A Kickstarter budget basically allows interviews, location shots, and boat rentals. The evidence is old school: photos and videos, books and various forms of reportage. They do one thing that most of the other monster hunters have not done, and that for me is what makes the film work. They talk to Coralee Miller, a docent at the Century Heritage Museum. Miller is First Nations; she’s thoroughly versed in the history and culture of the people miscalled the “Okanagan.” Their correct name is Syilx, and the lake’s name is a butchered—her word—version of Suknaqinx. The being called “Ogopogo” after a dance-hall ditty is more accurately and correctly “N-ha’a-itk”: Sacred Spirit of the Lake. Miller emphasizes that the two are completely different concepts. One is a tourist attraction. The other is a complex cultural icon. Watson is a cryptid guy, and really wants a real animal. He keeps emphasizing that Ogopogo is not a plesiosaur, in apparent contrast to the Loch Ness Monster. He doesn’t mention that the plesiosaur theory has been out of vogue for a while, or that the one-hump theory of Nessie is only one of many; she’s often seen with three or more humps. Lake Okanagan’s monster, he says, is a serpentine creature, very large—as much as 60 feet long—with a horselike head, a long, flexible neck that’s not much narrower than the sinuous body, and a long tail. It has paddlelike fins and a whale-like fluke at the end of its tail, and it moves with an undulating motion, with as many as four or five humps rising and falling in the water. It’s dark in color, may be lighter on the underside, and sightings often mention a pair of Shrek-like horns. What exactly it is, he doesn’t specify. Could be a mammal. Probably not a reptile. Probably not unique to Lake Okanagan: other lakes in British Columbia and Canada in general also have legends of serpentine monsters. There may be a reason for that. He takes to the lake with longtime Ogopogo hunter Bill Steciuk, who subscribes to the idea of underground channels connecting all the lakes in the region. A small but viable population of these creatures could be living and breeding all over the place, staying away from humans and motorboats. Watson would like to think that the horns/no horns issue is sexual dimorphism. Like deer or moose, Ogopogo males have horns, but females and young don’t. The sightings of what look like groups of them powering across the lake must be mama and babies. It’s a nice theory. He is thrilled with the 2022 photo, taken by a woman with her phone while she out boating on the lake. It was October and the vacation crowds were gone; the lake was quiet. She and her companions saw a profoundly strange orange object with pointy hornlike protuberances poking above the water and a triangular, somewhat wolflike face right below the surface. It didn’t bob with the waves; it was completely stationary. She only took the one photo, which went viral online. Some viewers claim to see a serpentine body below it. I think that’s wishful thinking. As to what it is, I suspect it may be some form of human flotsam, a large toy (the witnesses say it was about three feet across) or a mask or an art object. One of the film’s experts, John King, dismisses it out of hand. It’s a large dead crayfish floating upside down, he says. The “horns” are its claws poking out of the water. The “face” is its underside. He doesn’t speculate as to why it’s not moving with the water. It’s highly unlikely to be anchored to the bottom. It’s out in the middle of the lake, at a depth of around 700 feet. It’s a mystery, like so much else about the Ogopogo. It doesn’t look anything like the statues and plushies and murals in the towns around the lake. Those show a green cartoonlike dragon creature, kind of silly, kind of cute. Harmless and friendly. Lake Okanagan’s monster is for the most part a peaceable creature. The one documented case of aggression is one of the earliest sightings by a non-indigenous person, in the 1850s. A man named John McDougall was crossing the lake in a boat, as one did then, with a string of horses swimming behind him. Something seized one of the horses and sucked it down into the water, then the others were sucked down with it. He had to cut the rope before whatever it was took his boat as well as his horses. He claimed that he had been attacked by the demon of the lake. There had for years been a story among the settlers that the lake was dangerous; that what lived in it had to be propitiated with sacrifices, and armed guards had to patrol the shores to keep the settlers safe. Colonizers were afraid, and they passed that fear on from generation to generation—until the twentieth century, when a silly song finished the job of replacing the fear with a flood of tourist dollars. It’s all a misunderstanding, says Coralee Miller. First Nations peoples were not sacrificing domestic animals to a monster in the lake. When men were seen to drop a small piece of meat into the water, they were not trying to propitiate a dangerous beast. They were offering respect to the spirit of the water. Water is sacred, she says. We begin in the waters of the womb. Everything we create has its origin in water, from painting to building to cooking. Water cleanses us. It connects us—we travel on and in it. It teaches us to be mindful: whatever happens upstream affects everyone downstream. N-ha’a-itk is the essence that is water. In its spiritual form it’s long and serpentine and dark in color, with a head like a horse and antlers like a deer. It undulates as it moves. If it’s going up and down in a series of humps, says Miller, “they’re lying to you.” N-ha’a-itk moves from side to side like a snake. It’s a shapeshifter, a dimension walker. It’s everything that clean water is. Want to capture it? “Here’s a cup. Go to town.” I love Miller’s wry humor. As she explains, settlers either don’t listen or don’t understand what they hear. They mangle words and miss the point of concepts. They see a monster where the First Nations see the living essence of the water. In First Nations culture, with spirits, what’s given is what’s returned. If you come looking to dominate and conquer, spirits will conquer you. That’s likely what happened with John McDougall. He didn’t understand the water, and the water took his horses and nearly took him. (Miller notes in an aside that he was not a nice man. “He was a player,” she says.) It wasn’t anything unnatural that swallowed McDougall’s horses and nearly swallowed him. Spirits are as natural as it gets. Most likely, says Miller, he wasn’t familiar with the currents in the lake, and got caught in a strong one. Her culture subscribes to the belief in underwater caverns and channels. All the lakes in British Columbia are connected, she says. The same water flows through them all. The same spirit is in them. Near the end of the investigation, Miller and her cousin travel with the crew to Rattlesnake Island, where N-ha’a-itk is said to live. Rattlesnakes are the spirit’s protectors. They guard it and watch over it. In a boat off the shore of the Island, Miller offers tobacco to the spirit and shows how to address it properly. “It’s important to introduce yourself and let yourself be known. The land becomes accustomed to you and gives you what you need.” N-ha’a-itk is a straightforward being. Respect it and it will respect you. “It likes tobacco, it likes sage, it loves to be sung to, and the only flesh it partakes of is kokanee salmon.”[end-mark] The post Spirit of the Waters: Investigating the Creature of Lake Okanagan appeared first on Reactor.

You Only Have to Wait Until March for The Wheel of Time’s Third Season

News The Wheel of Time You Only Have to Wait Until March for The Wheel of Time’s Third Season The world is always changing, isn’t it? By Molly Templeton | Published on December 9, 2024 Screenshot: Prime Video Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: Prime Video “The world is changing,” says Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), setting a very familiar fantasy tone for our first look at the third season of The Wheel of Time. Moiraine is very concerned about what she’s seen in “a thousand thousand futures.” “In every future where I lived, Rand dies. And the only way he lives … is if I don’t,” she continues. Which is quite ominous—along with all the images of one or the other of them perishing terribly—but even a viewer who has not yet read the Robert Jordan books on which the series is based might be a bit skeptical that one of the two main characters is destined to perish so quickly. After all, very few humans perished in the battle at the end of season two (though we did lose one very good wolf). The synopsis has a quick reminder of what else happened in that finale: At the end of Season Two, after defeating Ishamael, Rand reunites with his friends at Falme and is declared the Dragon Reborn. But in Season Three, the threats against the Light are multiplying: the White Tower stands divided, the Black Ajah run free, old enemies return to the Two Rivers, and the remaining Forsaken are in hot pursuit of the Dragon… including Lanfear, whose relationship with Rand will mark a crucial choice between Light and Dark for them both. As the ties to his past begin to unravel, and his corrupted power grows stronger, Rand becomes increasingly unrecognizable to his closest allies, Moiraine and Egwene. These powerful women, who started the series as teacher and student, must now work together to prevent the Dragon from turning to the Dark…no matter the cost. Not mentioned here: all those Forsaken Ishamael was revealed to have released, or Nynaeve’s new friend Elayne (or Nynaeve’s testing), or the very bad time Egwene had, or Mat’s convenient escape from Liandrin’s prison along with Min, or Mat blowing the Horn of Valere. There was a lot, in that quite good season. And I haven’t even mentioned Lanfear. They’re all back for the third go-round: Daniel Henney as Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Dónal Finn as Mat Cauthon, Ceara Coveney as Elayne Trakand, Kate Fleetwood as Liandrin Guirale, Natasha O’Keeffe as Lanfear, Ayoola Smart as Aviendha, and Kae Alexander as Min Farshaw. The Wheel of Time will have its third season premiere March 13th, 2025, on Prime Video.[end-mark] The post You Only Have to Wait Until March for The Wheel of Time’s Third Season appeared first on Reactor.

Dark December, Black January: The Future of the American Continent

We are witnessing significant changes in America’s geopolitics. We, in both North and South America, share a common history and have lived through similar independence processes, which is more than enough for despotic regimes to fear. I apologize beforehand because this is an article not so directly related to prepping at the beginning, but the reason is a simple one. Reality Shock My experiences indicate that you’re going to need as many supplies as you can get. Surprise surprise. Unless you are a seasoned farmer/gardener with years of experience as a backup and enough productive land, tools, and access to water, it’s going to be rough to stock up enough preps. Most of the readers live in climates with harsh winters. They are miles ahead of the rest of us, who don’t need to pile up firewood to survive the winter, for example. In the tropics, for instance, you can’t just hang dry meat in the open. Flies will contaminate it with eggs, no matter how salty it is. A smoker is a good idea, but getting the proper firewood shavings is hard: most tropical woods have too much resin. Don’t get me wrong. Preparing, stockpiling, and training for the aftermath of an abnormal event is a must; however, life taught me that there is no such thing as a “short collapse.” I had 1-2 months of stockpile enough for two adults, a teenager, and a child, including a good water tank (300 gallons). That was back in the prime of my prepping times, with a good salary. A small room loaded with dry groceries like (rice/beans/pasta/flour/cornmeal/spices) in buckets with a lid, laurel leaves to repel bugs, and a secondary fridge plus a chest freezer. And like 8-9 boxes of canned tuna, eight boxes of UHT packages of liquid whole milk jars with anchovies and sardines, vegetables in vinegar, chocolate, cookies for the kids, and an assortment of other things, including personal hygiene and house cleaning supplies, sure we could overcome a short disruption. But the reality hit like a ton of bricks. All of that is gone now. The “government” wasn’t looking for anything else but taking the population to their knees, as it happened, indeed. Rationing and hyperinflation were the weapons. How long the next collapse will be? Sadly, the abnormal disruption of life I foresee is not short at all. We are on the verge of a major global conflict, and Venezuela is a “hot corner” in all this. We are going to face a truly difficult 2025, even after having won an election in the most challenging circumstances against a non-democratic regime. We won a battle, but the war ahead will not be a “political” one, I’m afraid. The uncertainty will increase exponentially, and many people smarter than me agree. The ugly truth that no woke socialist will tell you is this: the global conflict is the only way those regimes can survive in a world that craves freedom. China is working actively and investing heavily in societal control because they know what is coming. Their Western allies in all the governments have the same agenda: disarm civilians, establish the “15 minutes city”, electric cars or scooters connected via WiFi that can be disabled remotely, social credits, the WHO “vax passport,” and digital currency. All of that is NOT to ease your life. It’s to control people. All that while their boys and girls are distracted with the TikTok nonsense, losing themselves on the FB/IG dark pits, or falling in love with the last K-Pop band of androgynous beings. I would love to read your comments on this. I bet that even non-preppers passing by will have to agree. The path we should follow I feel that the coming events must bring us together, instead of marking that division that was so convenient for the insidious foreigners who hated the idea of a united Continent that kicked out their former rulers, choosing freedom and independence. I apologize again if this article happens to be too involved with politics. Still, I feel the need to express that there will be no level of prepping to keep us “safe” if the enemies of the American Continent are not dealt with. Dark December, Black January As we, The Americas as a whole, navigate through uncertain times that seem endless, the image of a divided continent is no longer the one we should keep projecting. Brazil and Colombia have openly exposed their intentions of not wanting anything to do with those pariahs. These guidelines separate the Americas because of the Spanish/English paradox, for a long time present in our societies, has been used as a wedge to separate our societies. They have been exploited for a common enemy, who fears and hates the concept of a united American Continent. Vast resources, a common language in most parts of it, and a common religion, with over 400MM population, should be more than enough to consider how important it is to get closer, ditching every attempt of division. The actions of those getting benefits from such division are now threatening to plunge us into a period of unprecedented turmoil since WW2. The potential consequences are deadly serious: financial instability, societal collapse, and widespread chaos. Not to mention the chain supply interruptions and the world trade becoming a mess. Situations will be used for the regimes that hate the freedoms the American Continent represents. This article delves into the potential fallout of not working on our current differences, drawing parallels with historical events to shed light on what we might expect. I listen to many countrymen down here talking about the TV shows where preppers are portrayed. What they say makes me think they believe that it’s impossible for them to do the same. I believe they see the consequences of a potential global conflict as something “far far away”. Consequences of the denial syndrome, perhaps of an ugly truth, despite having experienced the path the regime forced us to go. Even when dealing with the everyday struggles we face, they still don’t realize that once the containers stop showing up on our shores with supplies, spare parts for trucks, tractors, cars, and fuel…the regime will control everything (once again) at gunpoint, making their illegal fortunes even bigger. The need for external support is paramount. News cycles are dominated by polarizing narratives that fuel animosity rather than fostering understanding. This is perfect for the enemies of the West. The outcome is a community increasingly polarized and distrustful of foreigners (reasonably with the Tren de Aragua roaming around). How long are we going to wait? Until the foreign threat becomes domestic? We must recognize that the fragmentation of the bonds within both our societies is not just a political or social issue; it is a matter of national security. There is a gang controlling a vast reserve of oil & gas, almost one million square kilometers, and (supposedly) training Yihad warriors less than 1400 miles away. That’s like a 4-day trip on a cruiser motorcycle, taking it easy and stopping to smell the flowers and take selfies. The Americas will have to work together to bridge these divides. Unity does not mean uniformity; it means finding common ground and respecting diverse perspectives. Our financial fallout In the intricate web of global economies, the USA stands as a pivotal player. Once our best customer and ally, we are now tangled in a quite complex relationship. Like the neighbor that hears and sees the next door’s wife and children being beaten, but doesn’t want to interfere openly because the other neighbors will immediately jump to hold him, and manipulate the narrative in pursuit of their interests. The consequences of a deeply divided Continent extend far beyond social and political realms, manifesting in profound economic repercussions. A potential recession, exacerbated by societal divisions, could lead to significant job losses and widespread economic distress. The experiences of countries like this blessed land, which has faced severe economic turmoil and social unrest, offer valuable lessons in resilience and the necessity of prepping. Our demise was a weak State that ended by collapsing and falling apart a long time ago, only to be replaced by a tyranny sponsored by the American Continent’s enemies. Societal collapse and chaos in the Americas I hate to tell you this, but…The grim scenario of a deeply divided society teetering on the brink of chaos is not merely a dystopian fantasy. It’s a very plausible outcome if current trends continue. As the nation sees a World War unfold, chances are that widespread civil unrest starts (coordinated by internal agents, or not), and the beginning of looting, rioting, and lawlessness. Armed vigilantes are becoming a common sight, and the breakdown of essential infrastructure, such as power, water, and transportation systems, will push people to prioritize their immediate survival needs. As the situation spirals down, the potential rise in violence and crime, exacerbated by organized criminal elements (Cartel de los Soles and the different Trenes) taking advantage of the chaos to tighten their grip, becomes a stark reality. Mass migrations of people seeking refuge from violence, poverty, and instability ensue, further straining resources and social cohesion. This is one of the possible scenarios in the Americas once a global conflict unleashes if the criminal cartels are not (ahem) dealt with. On the positive side, the importance of preparedness and community support is well understood in many communities. This feeling is spreading fast. Immediate Preps In the face of potential crises, we have been stockpiling what we can within our limited means. This involves much more than just stocking up on essentials. A well-stocked supply of essentials like non-perishable and canned foods, water, fuel, and energy generation sources Practicing fundamental survival skills: Sneaking out of a city without being seen Cleaning a wound Driving a stick shift car, or a motorcycle Learning how to repair your vehicle to avoid being left stranded Develop an evacuation plan Must include: Multiple routes, Safe meeting points, A communication strategy to ensure that all family members are accounted for. Building strong relationships with neighbors and engaging in community preparedness efforts can create a network of support that is invaluable during times of crisis. Maybe this is too obvious, but sharing information about your preparations should be done carefully to avoid attracting unwanted attention. This includes a very low profile in the digital media. Prepping is about individual self-empowerment. About providing resilience and security for our loved ones in uncertain times. It’s about surviving and thriving in adversity. Thanks for helping to build a better world for everyone. Your donations through PayPal help me put food on my table and keep writing and documenting the history of this part of the world for the coming generations. Thanks for your reading. Stay safe, and keep tuned! J. What are your thoughts? Do you see these strategies to damage ties in play right now? If so, how is it playing out? Do you expect even more chaos as President Trump takes office in January? Let’s discuss it in the comments section. About Jose Jose is an upper middle class professional. Massage the feet of a victim of a traumatizing accident or mishap to help soothe shock. 4. Pest And Insect Repellant Tea tree oil is also known to have pest and insect repelling properties as well as pesticidal benefits. Mix a cup of witch hazel and 2 tsp of tea tree oil to make a tick repellent spray you can apply to your shoes and your feet to repel ticks. Apply 2 drops of tea tree oil directly to ticks to eliminate these pesky parasites. Mix a quart of water with 15 drops of tea tree oil and apply to areas you want insects repelled. 5. Parasitic Infection Treatment Since tea tree oil has antibacterial and pest-repelling properties, parasitic infections are no match for its healing abilities. Apply two drops of tea tree oil directly to areas affected with scabies in the morning and before bedtime for relief. Apply tea tree oil to both parasite and insect bites to help soothe and avoid infection in the affected areas. 6. Personal Care Tea tree oil's antibacterial and deodorizing properties make it effective in hygienic procedures. Make an antibacterial soap with 2 Tbsp of tea tree oil added to 3 lb. of cold processed soap before molding. Add 15 drops of tea tree oil to your bath for cleansing and soothing vaginal infection. 7. Pain Reliever Tea tree oil has amazing penetrating agents and is a strong solvent making it effective for relieving bodily stresses and pain. Alleviate a toothache by applying a drop to the painful area but make sure not to ingest tea tree oil as it is toxic. 8. Anti-Fungal What makes tea tree oil effective in getting rid of fungus is its terpinen content which kills infection-causing fungi. Apply a drop of tea tree oil to the wart, wrap it in a bandage to keep it dry for up to 2 hours. Repeat this process once in the morning and before bed until warts are gone. To get rid of ringworm, mix a drop of lavender oil and tea tree oil and apply twice a day every day. Treat and/or prevent fungal infection by applying tea tree oil to areas affected or may be affected by fungal infection. 9. Post-Natal Care Luckily, natural plant-based solutions are made for your post- and pre-natal care so you won't have to use chemicals. Make sure to dilute tea tree oil since they can be strong. Amazingly, tea tree oil is absorbed in the mammary tissue, so you can use it to alleviate painful breast sores or mastitis by making a compress of a mixture of warm water and tea tree oil. Disinfect your baby gear by spraying them with a mixture of water and tea tree oil. 10. Pet Care Spare you beloved pets from chemicals, and use tea tree oil for their hygiene care and fighting off pesky parasites.
