Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is recommending that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the first-degree murders of their parents in 1989. One of his colleagues says this is nothing but a political stunt. Gascón made his recommendation on Thursday after weeks of speculation that it was coming. While the final decision on the Menendez brothers’ fate will come from a judge, the DA’s recommendation will be considered in the ruling.  Erik and Lyle were originally sentenced to life without parole. But the case has been in the news again following the release of popular documentaries, including a season of Netflix’s “Monsters” in September. Supporters of the Menendez brothers argue that the murders of their parents were justified because they claimed their father sexually abused them. “I believe they have paid their debt to society,” Gascón said of the Menendez brothers during a news conference on Thursday.  However, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney John Lewin says Gascón is only focused on this case to draw attention away from the negative publicity he’s gotten recently.  “George Gascón is in the process of suffering the worst and most humiliating defeat by an elected district attorney in probably the history of the United States,” Lewin told Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt. “He is down 30 points. He has no money. And because of that, what he’s had to do is to try and generate as much publicity as he can.”  Lewin goes on to explain how the day before Gascón announced he was going to have another look at the Menendez case, there was a story in the LA Times discussing how he had refused to prosecute a juvenile double murder suspect, who subsequently went on to murder again. Basically blew them apart with shotguns … they ended up spending a bunch of money, and they opened the safe the next morning because they were very worried that there was a will.” Lewin called the resentencing recommendation a “publicity stunt.”  “George Gascón has 15,000 unfiled cases, including a bunch of sex cases, that he’s not paying attention to at all because they don’t generate publicity. This is a publicity stunt designed to basically bait and switch the electorate.” The next court date for the Menendez brothers is slated for November 26.

The University of Arkansas School of Law promoted a free “name and gender correction” pro bono session on Thursday that involved law students helping out. The law school said the event would provide “free legal assistance” to people who wanted to change their legal name and gender designation. Trans-identifying people often legally change their name and gender on their government documents — a man who identifies as a woman might change his gender to “female” and his name to “Sarah,” which would show up on his driver’s license, for example. The event was scheduled for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Fayetteville Public Library and was hosted by Legal Aid of Arkansas, a nonprofit that provides free legal aid to low-income people. “Volunteer law students and local attorneys will provide free legal assistance to those seeking name or gender marker changes. This event is open to the public,” the school posted on Facebook. (Facebook) In the comments of the post, people expressed interest in taking advantage of the free legal services. “What all is required for a name or gender change? I would love to come and change my name,” someone commented. “I was wondering the same thing,” wrote someone else. The law school said the event was part of “Pro Bono Week.” Law students often offer their services for free to people who cannot afford representation because it gives the students real-world experience practicing law. The University of Arkansas School of Law celebrates students who do many hours of pro bono work. On Wednesday, students who had completed the most pro bono hours were treated to “Dessert with the Dean” to “celebrate their contributions to the law school and the community,” the school posted on Facebook. Arkansas is one of the country’s more conservative states — about 42% of adults identify as conservative, according to Pew Research. Tuition is nearly $40,000 a year for an out-of-state student and nearly $18,000 a year for an Arkansas resident. Gender ideology exploded as a controversial issue several years ago and it has continued to loom large this election cycle. Conservatives have pushed back on medicalizing children with gender dysphoria with drugs like puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones or surgeries like double mastectomies and genital surgeries. At least 24 states, including Arkansas, have banned these treatments for minors. Arkansas’ ban on gender procedures for minors was struck down by a federal judge last year.

Best friends Timon and Pumbaa are a couple of Disney’s most beloved characters from The Lion King, but there’s no way that these creatures would get along in real life, right? Another exclaimed, “They exist!” Is it normal for warthogs and meerkats to be friends? Interestingly enough, Natural Habitat Adventures tells us that warthogs and meerkats aren’t usually the best of friends. Although they’re not necessarily sworn enemies, they’re not typically spotted together in the wild. It sounds like it’s quite an anomaly that the two animals in the video above have such a friendly relationship. Although meerkats and warthogs don’t spend much time with one another in nature, rehabilitation can apparently bring them together. Namibian farmer Ruben Lambrechts cares for many different creatures, including a few “Timons” and “Pumbaas” of his own.
