California has stepped back from enforcing its contentious censorship law against The Babylon Bee and attorney-blogger Kelly Chang Rickert, following a federal court’s indication that the law likely oversteps First Amendment protections. This decision grants both parties the freedom to continue their sharp-edged political satire online during a pivotal election season—at least for now. The case emerged from a lawsuit led by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorneys challenging two California laws—AB 2839 and AB 2655—that set stringent rules on online political speech. These laws, signed into action by Governor Gavin Newsom, aim to control a wide range of political commentary, including satire and have drawn fire for their ambiguous language, which opens the door for state interference in online discourse. The swift enactment of this legislation triggered emergency appeals from The Babylon Bee, Rickert, and other free speech advocates to put AB 2839 on hold. This law, which forbids “materially deceptive” content about California elections without disclaimers, carries severe consequences, including costly lawsuits. Jonathan Scruggs, ADF’s Vice President, didn’t hold back his criticism, saying, “California’s war against political memes is censorship, plain and simple. We shouldn’t trust the government to decide what’s true in our online political debates.” He went on to lambaste the attempt to police humor, adding, “Gov. Newsom has no constitutional authority to act as the humor police.” The legislation gained traction swiftly after Newsom publicly claimed a parody video of Vice President Kamala Harris “should be illegal.” California legislators responded with urgency, ushering these bills through to his desk. Newsom’s signing of the laws on September 17 stirred concern among free speech advocates who argue the state is silencing dissent by regulating which jokes are permissible. “Our job is hard enough when our jokes keep coming true, as if they were prophecies,” said The Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon. “But it becomes significantly more difficult when self-serving politicians abuse their power to try to control public discourse and clamp down on comedy. Unfortunately for them, the First Amendment secures our right to tell jokes they don’t like.” In their plea to the court, ADF attorneys contended that the law forces The Babylon Bee and Rickert into compliance with speech they fundamentally reject, stifling their right to freely express their opinions. The vague definitions within the law, they argued, could empower California officials to block content based on political bias. Filed as The Babylon Bee v. Bonta, the lawsuit first went to the US District Court for the Central District of California before being transferred to the Eastern District. With a coalition of legal allies, including local attorneys David Shaneyfelt and Brian R. Chavez-Ochoa, the plaintiffs have amassed significant support in their battle to uphold the constitutional protections for political satire. A Miami-based animal shelter’s volunteers find a “heartbreaking sight” after coming across a bait dog covered in wounds dumped in the middle of nowhere on Sunday, October 20. The Sunshine Animal Rescue shared the heartbreaking story on TikTok which has since garnered 2.3 million likes and over 10 million views. According to the animal shelter, they found the bait dog at the Rock Pit, an area known for dumped pets. “Our hearts shattered as we realized just how alive and thriving dog fighting still is here in South Florida,” they wrote in the caption. They explained that they routinely come in the area to check for any abandoned animals. In their TikTok post, the animal shelter wrote, “nothing could have prepared us for the horror that we found today”. “At first, we thought he might be another stray, but then reality hit us hard—he had been used in dog fighting, chewed up from head to toe, his belly and the insides of his legs torn up.” In the video, the dog can be seen approaching the volunteer’s car, asking for help. “Despite everything he’s been through, this sweet boy came right up to our car, looking for help—trusting, hoping. It’s unimaginable how after so much abuse, he still believes in kindness,” the animal shelter wrote. And despite being abandoned with all the wounds in his body, the black dog was still wagging his tail and was as sweet as one can be. “His body tells a story of pain and cruelty, but his spirit? The animal shelter reveals that their volunteers immediately brought the dog to the Town and Country Animal Hospital to get checked and receive treatment. “Our rescue is small and very over capacity right now, but we were not going to be more humans to fail this sweet boy,” the animal rescue said. Volunteers decided to name him Hersh, but the Sunshine Animal Rescue wrote, “We think Trooper might be a better final name for this sweet and tough baby.” After getting checked at the vet, Sunshine Animal Rescue reveals that Trooper is positive for leptospirosis and heartworm. He is also anemic, has hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm, and whipworm. Furthermore, the animal rescue also reveals that the dog is currently hospitalized and “his life is on the line right now.” And because of his critical condition, the animal shelter is asking for donations to help him recover and heal. Not only did Donald Trump expertly troll the Vice President by spending a day as a fry cook at McDonald's, but Harris, who claimed to have worked there in the past, appears never to have worked there at all: McDonalds can’t find any record of her as an employee. “It’s weird, they can’t find the employment records for Kamala Harris from the 1980s,” Pat Gray of “Pat Gray Unleashed” comments. “McDonald’s is trying to play it cool by saying ‘Yeah, we can’t find her employment.' They’re trying not to take sides, I guess.” But it gets worse. Keith Malinak claims that he has a source from inside the campaign who has told him that Kamala is in full-on breakdown mode. “I got a good source, they’re very close to the Walz campaign, and this individual has been spot-on with a lot of stuff that has been sent my way,” Malinak explains. “I got this last night: ‘Kamala has completely lost it mentally. She breaks down in tears in private, and she has gone after Doug, accusing him of tanking the campaign with his scandals,'” he continues. “She repeatedly cusses out Joe Biden in staff meetings for taking airtime away from her, and she’s livid over the hurricane stuff.” Malinak also was told that Kamala has “had to double her anxiety medication” and that “a few campaign staffers have quit.” “They quit because they want to try to focus on explaining her policies instead of attacking Trump, which is all she has been doing, and it isn’t working. She feels she made the wrong VP pick as well, because he has many scandals and she feels like the Democrat machine wants her to lose,” he adds. Kamala and her campaign management are also reportedly arguing about her appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Apparently, she wants to do it, while her campaign management believes “an hour of her in a room with somebody that is going to ask her tough questions would give Trump a 48-state win.” “They don’t trust her, and it’s an endless circle of arguments,” he adds.
