NASA Delays Moon Landing Again as Space Race With China Heats Up

NASA’s Artemis III mission, which aims to return humans to the Moon for the first time since Apollo, has been delayed again, now targeting 2027 at the earliest. This is the second delay announced this year. Artemis I, an uncrewed spacecraft that orbited the Moon, launched in November 2022. Artemis II, originally planned for 2023 as a crewed test mission, was postponed to 2025 and has now been pushed back further to 2026. “We do not fly until we are ready,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “We need to do the next test flight, and we need to do it right. That’s how the Artemis program proceeds.” One of NASA’s pressing concerns is competition with China, which has announced plans to land astronauts on the Moon by 2030. “We plan to launch Artemis 3 in mid-2027,” Nelson said. “That will be well ahead of the Chinese government’s announced intention for 2030.” Speculation has also arisen about the future of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). Rumors suggest the incoming Trump administration could replace it with Elon Musk’s Starship. Such a shift—or further delays—could increase the chance of China reaching the Moon first. The stakes remain high as the global space race intensifies, and NASA strives to ensure the Artemis missions succeed. Are We Close to Finding Alien Life? James Webb Offer New Hope

The chances of finding extraterrestrial life soon may be slim, but the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers hope. As the most powerful orbital observatory, it’s focused on TRAPPIST-1, a red dwarf star 41 light-years away surrounded by seven rocky, Earth-sized exoplanets. Three of these planets orbit in the habitable zone, where liquid water—and potentially life—could exist. Excitingly, the James Webb has already measured the temperature of one TRAPPIST-1 exoplanet, marking the first detection of radiation from an Earth-like planet outside our Solar System. According to Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute, the telescope’s upcoming observations in 2025 may confirm whether life exists on alien worlds. “In 2025, the JWST will likely shed more light into these tantalizing detections, and hopefully confirm, for the first time ever, if there is life on alien worlds light-years away from our own,” says Lisa Kaltenegger, a founding director of the Carl Sagan Institute and a professor of astronomy at Cornell University. Studying exoplanets is challenging because they emit little light and are often overshadowed by their host stars. However, dim red dwarfs like TRAPPIST-1 are easier to analyze. By observing planetary transits—when a planet passes in front of its star—the JWST can detect how starlight interacts with molecules in the planet’s atmosphere, potentially revealing water or even signs of life. If TRAPPIST-1 doesn’t deliver, hope remains within our Solar System. Europa, Jupiter’s icy moon, may harbor a vast subsurface ocean. NASA’s Europa Clipper, launched in October, is set to arrive by 2030 to explore its habitability. The post Are We Close to Finding Alien Life? CS(A)I? This AI can determine time of death by looking at a decomposing body

The actors in CSI make it look easy to determine a dead body’s time of death. But it’s actually much harder than you might think. In fact, there aren’t any real tools to help determine exactly when someone died, but a new AI crime scene investigation tool could soon change that. The tool is called geoFOR, and it is partly a database of information gathered from previously discovered bodies and partly an AI-powered tool that can capture details about new cases and then determine a time of death for the bodies involved. The tool is currently in development, with two scientists from Clemson University working to improve its capabilities. Hudson Smith, one of these two scientists, works on the technical side of the new AI CSI tool. He says that he was shocked to learn that the tools and ease of determining the time of death in TV shows and films aren’t anywhere near realistic. Because of this, he thought that a tool should be available to help take that determination beyond being just a “gut feeling.” A closeup of police car lights at night Image source: zef art/Adobe Katherine Weisensee, who is also working on geoFOR and has consulted with police forces in the past, says that using AI and the data found in geoFOR can help improve those predictions. So far, it seems to be working pretty well. The tool has been loaded with data from more than 3,200 cases, making it more accurate and adaptable. To calculate the time of death, the AI crime scene investigation tool takes data like the body’s precise location, estimated size, and even details on whether it was found indoors or outdoors, as well as the condition it was found in, to determine the time of death. It also looks at whether the presence of maggots can be seen, whether flies or beetles are around, and other simple medical questions. So far, the researchers have detailed geoFOR’s capabilities in a study preprinted on arXiv. It’s still a long way from being used widely to determine the time to death in active cases. However, having a tool like this showcases just how useful AI can be in the right circumstances. Of course, this kind of AI is a bit different than the AI we see powering futuristic AI butlers or even the latest models of ChatGPT, as it is trained to do one specific thing, making it much more focused. Unlike the first two, Alex was unable to recover from his affected lungs, with the tumor spreading to his brain. He died of a stroke in October 2020, and Alex recalled how uneventful the moment was as he and those present sat down, dazed by the sudden occurrence. He praised his late friend for fighting until the end despite his many troubles. Alex Van and Eddie Van Halen/Instagram Alex Van Halen was angry at Eddie Van Halen for neglecting his health Alex believed Eddie would have lived longer had he not been addicted to drugs. He said Eddie’s life was about searching for something he did not know, and despite his effort to save his brother, it was always his choice to adhere or not. Alex Van and Eddie Van Halen/Instagram Alex continues to face the hurt he feels, noting that he will not run from his pain of loss, which he described as overwhelming.
