WP Engine asks court to stop Matt Mullenweg from blocking access to WordPress resources

Image: Cath Virginia / The Verge WP Engine is asking a court to put a stop to Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg’s public campaign against the company. In a motion for a preliminary injunction filed against Automattic and Mullenweg on Friday, the third-party hosting platform requests that the court restore its access to WordPress resources and allow it to regain control of its plugin that had been taken over. In the filing, WP Engine claims it’s facing “multiple forms of immediate irreparable harm” as a result of Mullenweg and Automattic’s actions, including “loss of customers, market share and goodwill.” The company also says it saw a 14 percent increase in cancellation requests from September 26th to the 30th — just days after Mullenweg called WP Engine a “cancer” to the... The FTC is trying to find out if John Deere’s repair policies broke the law

Photo by Artur Widak/NurPhoto via Getty Images The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is probing whether John Deere used unfair practices related to the repair of its agricultural equipment that might violate the FTC Act. The investigation into John Deere’s restrictions on customers’ right to repair agricultural equipment was revealed by data analytics company Hargrove & Associates, Inc. (HAI), as it fights a subpoena-like civil investigative demand (CID) from the FTC to hand over sales data. As reported earlier by Reuters, the company fears sharing the information the FTC seeks about agricultural equipment sales could harm its business relationships. visionOS 2.1 beta 6 now available ahead of official release

A few days after seeding visionOS 2.1 beta 5, Apple released another build for this upcoming operating system update. So far, it's unclear what new features Apple plans to bring to Apple Vision Pro, even though visionOS 2 has a few delayed features. So far, Apple Vision Pro users look forward to one major feature still unavailable from the current visionOS 2 build: Mac Virtual Display: It will feature a higher resolution and larger size, creating an ultra-wide display equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side.  While visionOS 2 isn’t a revolutionary update, Apple has been addressing several lacking functions users were waiting for with the original Apple Vision Pro release. That said, some of the visionOS 2 features include: Spatial photos: With visionOS 2 beta, users can revisit past memories by creating spatial photos directly from their library in the Photos app.  Home View:  Users can now personalize their Home View by rearranging apps and placing them wherever they want, including their compatible iPhone and iPad apps. visionOS 2 makes navigating Apple Vision Pro faster and easier for users to access key functions with new hand gestures to get to frequently used features like Home View and Control Center. New gestures allow users to see important information at a glance, like the current time and battery level, and perform actions like adjusting the volume. In addition, travelers can experience their favorite apps on the go with a new Travel mode for trains. visionOS 2 also adds: Guest user: For those moments when a user wants to share their Vision Pro, a family member or colleague can be added as a Guest User and have their eye and hand data saved for 30 days. The Apple TV app brings support for multiview to Apple Vision Pro for the ultimate sports-viewing experience. Later this year, fans can watch up to five simultaneous streams to keep track of all their favorite sports and teams. To help users achieve calm and focus, the Mindfulness app includes a new capability called Follow Your Breathing that presents dynamic visual animations and sounds that respond to the user’s breathing patterns. BGR will let you know if we find anything new with visionOS 2.1 beta 6. iPad mini 7 is missing a major iPadOS feature, and Apple can’t explain why

iPad mini 7 is missing a major iPadOS feature, and Apple can’t explain why

Earlier this week, Apple introduced the iPad mini 7. With 8GB of RAM, the A17 Pro chip, and Apple Intelligence support, this is indeed the iPad mini Pro users have been clamoring for. However, even after boosting the specs of the iPad mini, Apple's smallest tablet lacks a major iPadOS feature: Stage Manager. Stage Manager was first introduced with iPadOS 16, and it requires top specs like 8GB of RAM and Apple's latest M-series chips. Over the years, Apple made concessions to expand this feature to other iPad models. For example, the base model iPad Air 5 lacks memory swap, a requirement for Stage Manager, but it still supports this feature. Apple then expanded Stage Manager to iPad models with 6GB of RAM and older iPad Pro models with the A12X and A12Z chips. Still, the iPad mini 6 didn't even meet the scaled-back requirements, with the previous-generation tablet featuring an A15 Bionic chip and 4GB of RAM. iPadOS 16 Stage Manager multitasking user interface. Image source: Apple Inc. With the iPad mini 7, Apple gave its tiny tablet a huge specs boost, so there's no official explanation for why this device still doesn't have Stage Manager. The likeliest answer could be its smaller 8.3-inch display, which might not offer the ideal multitasking experience. I would argue that if Split Screen has always worked with iPad mini, Stage Manager shouldn't be a problem. Even so, 9to5Mac's Filipe Espósito says a workaround could be Apple offering Stage Manager when the tablet is connected to an external display. This way, users would have a portable device that could become a powerful computer when connected to a display. With the iPad mini 7 release coming next week, it may now depend on customers asking Apple to add this feature so that we might see it in a future software update, hopefully before iPadOS 19. Socially Distanced Layout of the World’s Oldest Cities Helped Evade Disease

By R. Alexander Bentley/The Conversation In my research focused on early farmers of Europe, I have often wondered about a curious pattern through time: Farmers lived in large dense villages, then dispersed for centuries, then later formed cities again, only to abandon those as well. Why? Archaeologists often explain what we call urban collapse in terms of climate change, overpopulation, social pressures or some combination of these. Each likely has been true at different points in time. But scientists have added a new hypothesis to the mix: disease. Living closely with animals led to zoonotic diseases that came to also infect humans. Outbreaks could have led to dense settlements being abandoned, at least until later generations found a way to organize their settlement layout to be more resilient to disease. In a new study, my colleagues and I analyzed the intriguing layouts of later settlements to see how they might have interacted with disease transmission.
