Feds are investigating Tesla ‘Full Self-Driving’ crashes in reduced visibility

Image: Owen Grove / The Verge NHTSA is opening a preliminary evaluation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode (FSD) over the possibility of crashes in reduced roadway visibility conditions. The agency is opening the investigation after noting four reports of incidents like that, including one last November in Rimrock, AZ, where a Model Y struck and killed a pedestrian, as reported by TechCrunch. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified four Standing General Order (SGO) reports in which a Tesla vehicle experienced a crash after entering an area of reduced roadway visibility conditions with FSD -Beta or FSD -Supervised (collectively, FSD) engaged. In these crashes, the reduced roadway visibility arose from conditions such as sun glare, fog, or airborne... Continue reading…

Nintendo’s Alarmo is cute and cozy — but it’s still just an alarm clock

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge I have always had an adversarial relationship with alarm clocks. They are gadgets designed to ruin my most precious time, and in order to work effectively, they must be as annoying as possible. Which is why I was intrigued by Nintendo’s surprise reveal of Alarmo. (Once I got over my surprise of it not being the long-awaited Switch 2 announcement.) What if getting up in the morning could be a little more playful? Maybe what I really needed all along was Princess Zelda’s soothing voice or the chirps of tiny pikmin to ease me into consciousness in the morning. After a week with Alarmo, I have to admit that it hasn’t changed much about my sleep patterns. It has some clever ideas, and it looks great on a shelf, but ultimately, it’s still an... People are flocking to Bluesky as X makes more unwanted changes

Image: Bluesky A handful of changes coming to X may be pushing users to its competitor. Bluesky, the decentralized social platform, says it added 500,000 new users in a day this week. The new wave of signups could be related to several controversial changes on X in the last few days. This week, X users got a pop-up message notifying them that their posts will be visible even to users they’ve previously blocked. Those accounts still won’t be able to interact with their posts, but it’s a substantial change to how the block feature works that could open users up to harassment. “Today, block can be used by users to share and hide harmful or private information about those they’ve blocked,” an official X account posted. “Users will be able to see if such... Ploopy’s 3D-printed, open-source trackpad is thoroughly customizable

Ploopy’s trackpad can be purchased preassembled or in a DIY kit. | Image: Ploopy Ploopy is expanding its collection of mod-friendly peripherals with a new seven-inch trackpad that supports multi-finger gestures and features like palm rejection. Like Ploopy’s mouse and trackballs, its new trackpad runs on the QMK open-source firmware, further expanding how its functionality can be customized. The trackpad is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2040, while finger tracking is handled by a Microchip ATMXT1066TD processor which can all be found on a single mainboard that’s easy to swap into another case. Although Ploopy says the included 3D-printed case “has a fantastic surface finish” and is “great to use all day,” you can download the case’s open-source design files to print it using a different material or change its design... ChatGPT app for Windows is now available, with a few big caveats

OpenAI unveiled the first ChatGPT desktop app back in May when it unveiled GPT-4o and Advanced Voice Mode. However, the app was limited to Macs with M-series chips. Windows users were left behind in this initial desktop push, and that should be no surprise. OpenAI has always focused on Apple's platforms with its ChatGPT app. The iPhone got a standalone app well before Android, and we expected the same thing to happen on the desktop. Then there's the fact that Microsoft has its own AI tools for Windows, which are based in part on ChatGPT. However, OpenAI is finally ready to let you run ChatGPT in a dedicated Windows app rather than in a browser. The company announced the rollout of its Windows app, which you can now download and run on your laptop or desktop. However, there are a few limitations you should be aware of before attempting to install it. Continue reading... iPad mini 7 benchmarks show the tiny tablet is incredibly powerful

iPad mini 7 benchmarks show the tiny tablet is incredibly powerful

Apple unveiled the iPad mini 7 earlier this week, which I consider an amazing upgrade over its predecessor even though it's practically identical to the iPad mini 6 in terms of design. At $499, you get a tablet that can run Apple Intelligence thanks to the iPhone 15 Pro's chipset. That's the A17 Pro that Apple introduced last year, paired with 8GB of RAM. Once Apple announced the tablet, we realized the iPad mini 7's chip isn't exactly the same version of the A17 Pro Apple used for the iPhone 15 Pro. Instead, it's a binned version, sporting one less GPU core than the iPhone variant. I said at the time the iPad mini 7 would be a tremendously powerful computer despite rocking less potent chips in terms of graphics. We now have benchmarks that prove the iPad mini 7 performance is in line with the iPhone 15 Pro. Also, the benchmarks show the smaller iPad is the second-best Apple tablet you can purchase, performance-wise, after the M4 iPad Pro. Continue reading...
