Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) accused grocery chain Kroger of using facial recognition technology to deploy digital price tags and increase the prices certain individuals pay for groceries. “Families across the country are struggling to keep up with rising prices, and there’s growing concern about how technology like facial recognition and behavioral tracking are driving our unaffordability crisis. I am writing to raise concerns about Kroger’s decision to adopt the use of Electronic Shelving Labels (ESL) in their grocery stores,” the Democratic congresswoman wrote in a letter to Kroger. “Additionally, through a partnership with Microsoft, I understand that Kroger is intending to place cameras at its digital displays, using facial recognition technology to determine gender and age of customers captured on camera to present targeted advertisements to display on ESLs,” she continued. “Kroger’s use of facial recognition technology and surge pricing is concerning when we are hearing growing complaints about the rising cost of groceries at big retailers,” she added. “The use of facial recognition tools has the potential to invade a customer’s privacy and employ biased price discrimination,” she wrote. “Families are struggling to put food on the table. The plan also includes so-called Enhanced Display for Grocery Environment (EDGE) shelf displays that would reportedly include cameras to capture customer information, including images of faces to better tailor ads. But Rep. Tlaib, whose home state of Michigan has 120 Kroger locations, expressed concern about these technologies in her letter dated Oct. 11 and shared Tuesday for the first time publicly. The outlet noted the plan for “dynamic pricing” and “highly individualized advertising” drew comparisons to the sci-fi movie Minority Report. Per USA TODAY: Kroger introduced digital price tags, called Kroger Edge, to stores in 2018. Bilal Baydoun, director of policy and research for Groundwork Collaborative, wrote in testimony to the Senate Banking Committee in March that the technology would be used to “determine how much price hiking each of us can tolerate.” Kroger is currently in the midst of an attempted merger with fellow grocery conglomerate Albertson’s. Arguments over an injunction sought by the Federal Trade Commission on the proposed $25 billion transaction closed in September. Lawyers for the commission argued that the deal would reduce competition, raise consumer prices and eliminate jobs.

The U.S. reportedly deployed B-2 stealth bombers this week to strike underground weapon storage facilities used by the Houthis, an Iranian-backed Islamic terrorist group based in Yemen. Vem Miller, a Nevada man who was arrested last weekend outside a Trump rally, is suing Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco for creating “a false narrative against Miller” when he alleged Miller was trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump, whom Miller says he fully supports. Miller was arrested for allegedly having a fake pass to the rally — which Miller has denied — and numerous illegal, loaded weapons in his vehicle. Sheriff Bianco told the press following Miller’s arrest that his team likely stopped a third assassination attempt on the former president. “I probably did have deputies that prevented the third assassination attempt,” Bianco said. “I truly do believe that we prevented another assassination attempt.” In his lawsuit, Miller says Bianco “wanted to create a narrative so as to be viewed as a ‘heroic’ Sheriff who saved Presidential candidate Trump from a third assassination attempt.” Miller further contends that Bianco made false statements about him even after he was notified by Secret Service and the FBI that they did not view Miller as a threat. On Tuesday, Bianco told the Los Angeles Times that it was possible that Miller had not been at the rally to hurt Trump. “Three days later, IF everything Mr. Miller has said is true, and I really hope it is, then he probably wasn’t there to hurt former President Trump,” the sheriff said via text message. “I definitely said it and can’t change that.” “There is no way for us to know for sure,” Bianco added. “That is up to further investigation, if any, from the FBI.” Miller has spoken to the press in the aftermath of the arrest and repeatedly stated that he’s a supporter of Trump, “100%.” He also said he’s been to numerous Trump rallies and typically informs officers at the rallies that he has legal firearms in his vehicle. However, at the Coachella, California rally, where Miller was arrested, he said his guns were not legal. Miller said he didn’t realize there were different laws in California than in Nevada and made a mistake.
