A lot of things in Coach Joe Kennedy’s life have been unexpected—not the least of them being taking a major case to the Supreme Court or having a movie made about his life.  Kennedy’s decision to take a knee in prayer after football games placed him in the middle of a national controversy, and thrust him into a spotlight he never asked for or wanted, since, as he acknowledges, he sees himself as a pretty “average Joe.” The film “Average Joe” hits theaters Thursday and aims to go beyond what Americans know about the coach from news headlines to share his personal life story, says director Harold Cronk. Kennedy was thrust off the football field and into the courtroom nearly a decade ago after he was told he could not take a knee in silent prayer on the 50-yard-line after football games. His decision to persist in his commitment to the Lord cost him his job at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington, about 30 miles west of Seattle. In 2022, after a seven-year legal fight, Kennedy won his case before the Supreme Court. In early September 2023, he returned to the football field and again took a knee in prayer at the end of the game. Later that same month, he made the choice to “retire,” telling The Daily Signal at the time that he and his wife “finished the fight.” “You know, we were in the race to finish the fight, and we’ve remained faithful, and that’s it,” he said. The vast majority of America’s meat supply comes from four major companies, leaving little room in the market for smaller farms to compete. JBS Foods, National Beef Packing Co., Tyson Foods, and Cargill combined hold 85% of the market, leading to the closing of thousands of family farms.  “Any time something is consolidated … you’re going to deal with more issues, like cleanliness, with health issues for animals, because now you’re cramming them into smaller spaces. You’re just worrying about quantity over quality,” says Brooke Ence, co-founder of From The Farm.  Growing up in a family of farmers and ranchers, Ence says, she became troubled as she watched family-owned farms and ranches forced to close their doors, and Americans become sicker eating food that is mass produced.  In response to what Ence calls the centralization of America’s food production system, Ence, an entrepreneur, social media influencer, and former famed CrossFit athlete, together with A.J. Richards founded From The Farm, a company aiming to connect Americans directly to small farmers and ranchers across America.  The goal of From The Farm is to create “a parallel economy, where producers can now have a direct line … to people around the country who are looking for healthy food,” Ence says. “We help a customer shake the hand that feeds them.”  From The Farm’s website allows Americans to find local farms near them where they can purchase goods directly and allows farmers and ranchers to advertise to consumers. The company is fully operational, but it’s still building out its platform and seeking additional farmers to join the platform and for investors to take part in creating that “parallel economy.”  Ence sits down with the hosts of the “Problematic Women” podcast to discuss the issues in America’s supply chain. On this week’s episode of “The Signal Sitdown,” I speak to Sen. Rick Scott of Florida about his bid to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as leader of Senate Republicans and how the Nov. 5 election will shape the next Congress. In our discussion, Scott suggests McConnell has become tyrannical as Senate minority leader, as has Chuck Schumer of New York as Senate majority leader. “What we have here is we have dictatorships,” Scott tells me. “We have the McConnell dictatorship and the Schumer dictatorship. … Schumer tells Democrats how to vote, McConnell comes in and tells Republicans how to vote.” Scott says things are so broken that the current Senate GOP doesn’t have a governing agenda. “In our bylaws, we’re supposed to have a legislative agenda,” Scott tells me. “I’ve been up here six years. There’s no legislative agenda. You know, we asked for it after I lost to McConnell at the end of the ‘22 cycle. We never got one.” Now, the Senate Republican conference is looking for change, he says. “I ran against McConnell at the end of the ’22 cycle,” Scott says. “I didn’t win, but what happened is we started really having real conversations.”  “Most of my colleagues, they want change,” the Florida senator adds. And Scott says he believes the addition of some new Republican senators could help facilitate that change. “We have great candidates,” Scott says, referring to GOP Senate candidates coast to coast, and a big election night could make a big impact on how business is done in Washington. To decide if off-grid solar survival is right for you, let’s set the ultra-technical aspects aside (mostly) for a moment, and work through the top 5 questions to ask yourself before diving in, getting off-grid, and soaking up the rays! 1. What is your “payback period”? “Payback period” is a phrase that’s thrown around a lot in regard to solar. So first, we need to break that down. Solar materials and labor cost (X) and your current electric bill costs you (Y) each month / year. What we want to know is: How soon will the solar system start saving me money? To determine how long that will take we just divide (X) by (Y). For example, let’s say solar costs $1,000 (X), and your current monthly electric bill is $100 (Y).  Because you paid $1,000 up front and you don’t have an electric bill anymore, after your 10th month you’ll be saving $100 per month. So in this example, your payback period is 10 months. (Hint: Solar prices have dropped dramatically in the past 10 years, but your payback period almost definitely going to be quite a bit longer than 10 months)   2.) Am I in a location that’s viable for solar? Location, location, location. The more hours of sunlight that your solar panels can receive, the better. A big mistake that’s made all too often with solar is failing to consider an object like a tree, or chimney, or nearby pole that will cast a shadow on your solar array at some point during the day.  Even though that shadow might only be covering a tiny portion of the one panel it can drastically reduce the performance of the whole array. As the sun tracks from east to west throughout the day, and throughout the seasons, you want to make sure your array is in a location where it can receive maximum sunlight. A quick google search for “distribution of solar radiation in _______ (your country)” should show you what you’re looking for and you can narrow in from there. 3.) Are you self-installing, or hiring an installer? Depending on your local laws, having a certified installer may be the only legal option. This comes with huge benefits of having someone to contact in the event of a malfunction, having an expert help determine your needs, and it will certainly decrease the time you have to wait before going off-grid. Even at the prices solar is now available for, this is not an investment you want to have to make twice if you make a mistake. However, if you are free to do what you please on your land, you could save a significant amount of money by self-installing. Remember, that the self-installing route will involve a lot of research, and it can be extremely dangerous to work with electricity, but it can absolutely be done. It’s probably from growing up with an ultra safety conscious father, but I feel compelled to reiterate that working with electricity can be deadly and it is critical to inform yourself on how to safely work with it before attempting a project like a solar install. | Want to see the full article?
