The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is responsible for safeguarding many things involving air and space. As a government agency, NASA is frequently a target of computer hackers attempting to breach its security systems. When a hacker identified only as “7h3h4ckv157” on X (formerly Twitter) managed to infiltrate their systems, they sent a notice to NASA, and the response was unexpected. What is unknown to many is that NASA encourages hackers and independent security researchers to find holes in its security. They even outline the procedure for reporting potential threats in their Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP). Knowing the policy, this hacker did everything he should have done. Rather than sending out the lawman with handcuffs, NASA sent the hacker a thank-you letter. Using the VDP and filing reports through NASA, the hacker helps the agency improve its security measures. The letter states, in part, “On behalf of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and NASA’s Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP), we want to recognize your efforts as an independent security researcher in identifying the vulnerability you reported and for responsibly following our VDP guidelines.” By utilizing hackers’ abilities, NASA receives quality assurance checks for computer security. Each independent security researcher will “attack” the system differently, meaning a better chance of finding areas subject to breaches. It is much better to encourage friendly hackers than to wait until our enemy’s hackers access the system. A rock that’s over 2 billion years old may change how scientists understand the evolution of life on Earth. Researchers, in a study published in Microbial Ecology, found living microbes trapped inside the ancient stone. It’s “the oldest example of living microbes being found within ancient rock so far discovered,” according to a press release. “We didn’t know if 2-billion-year-old rocks were habitable,” said Yohey Suzuki, lead author and associate professor at the University of Tokyo. “Until now, the oldest geological layer in which living microorganisms had been found was a 100-million-year-old deposit beneath the ocean floor, so this is a very exciting discovery.” In some ways, this rock acts like a time capsule. The earliest forms of life on Earth appeared roughly 3.5 billion years ago, while humans have only existed for a few hundred thousand years. The microbes inside the stone evolved extremely slowly over the millennia. This suggests that studying their genetic material could provide groundbreaking insights. “By studying the DNA and genomes of microbes like these,” said Suzuki, “we may be able to understand the evolution of very early life on Earth.” The stone was found deep underground in South Africa’s Bushvelt Igneous Complex. The international research team believes that studying these ancient microbes could also aid in the search for life on other planets. NASA’s Perseverance mission, for example, aims to bring back samples from Mars that could be as old as this Earthly rock. Suzuki shared his excitement, saying that the discovery of these ancient microbes might be a preview of what could be found on Mars. As part of the event, the company is rolling out a number of changes to its ridehailing and delivery business to reflect the fact that more drivers and couriers are using electric vehicles. Uber Green, the company’s EV and hybrid ridehailing product, is going fully electric in several select cities. Uber says Uber Green is now an EV-only service in 40 cities and states.
