Joaquin Phoenix says Kiss inspired “Joker: Folie à Deux”

The latest blockbuster to be released is the highly anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the main character and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Although it is inspired by the comic book character, director Todd Phillips created a very different film in 2019, drawing inspiration from Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. It would be expected that he took a similarly unique approach with the sequel, which has been both praised and criticized by audiences due to its numerous musical numbers. But in an interview with USA Today, Phoenix revealed that one of the inspirations for the movie were Kiss and Gene Simmons. Joaquin Phoenix says Kiss inspired "Joker: Folie à Deux" "Did you ever think, how about Gene Simmons from KISS? Where 20-year-olds are painting their faces, putting on platform shoes, all rock 'n' roll," Phoenix said laughing. "But what happens when you're in your 40s and like, 'I don't want to put the makeup on anymore'? I just started laughing about that. Todd and I were like, maybe that's the beginning of something," Joaquin Phoenix said. What Phoenix described actually happened. In 1983, nine years after the band formed, they decided to remove their make-up. This 'unmasked' era began with the album Lick It Up (1983) and continued with Animalize (1984), Asylum (1985), Crazy Nights (1987), Hot in the Shade (1989), and Revenge (1992). The make-up returned in 1996 when original members Peter Criss (drums) and Ace Frehley (guitar) rejoined the band. Although they left again a few years later, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley decided the band would continue touring with their iconic look. They used the make-up until their retirement in 2023. Gene Simmons told that story in an interview with Classic Rock in 2016. Gene Simmons said that he isn't actually close to the actor and is really a kind of “hello, goodbye” relationship when they bump into each other in places. The bassist said that the late Kiss drummer Eric Carr, who lost his battle against cancer in 1991 at the age of 41, had a “pretty hot black girlfriend named Pantera”. According to Simmons, De Niro was really interested in her when he met Carr and “wasted no time on zoning in on Pantera”. Simmons didn’t say if something happened between the two. De Niro and Kiss' fan "Fat Vinnie" But, the biggest connection between Kiss and De Niro happened when the actor spent some time with one of the most hardcore Kiss fans in history called “Fat Vinnie”. Simmons told that the fan had seen something about 200 or 300 concerts of the American group until the early 80s, “He travels around the world. He’s had triple-bypass heart operations. All the way through the recovery process he has still seen every show”. De Niro was about to start to film the Martin Scorsese praised movie “The King Of Comedy” that shows an extreme fan of Jerry Lewis. To prepare for the role De Niro wanted to meet a hardcore fan and Eric Carr introduced him to Fat Vinnie. Simmons said that the actor actually lived at Fat Vinnie’s house for sometime to really see how his life was. “He fashioned his idiosyncrasies and his style of talking for the entire film on a Kiss fan! In fact, there’s a pivotal moment where De Niro said he wanted Fat Vinnie to come and work for him as his driver and personal assistant. But Vinnie said, “Sorry, I can’t. Kiss is going back out on tour!”” Gene Simmons said. Ozzy says Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off the stage

In 1978 Black Sabbath was already one of the biggest bands in the planet and they were touring to promote the album "Never Say Die". That year, a new American band called Van Halen was out on the road promoting their self-titled debut album and they had the chance to become Sabbath's opening act. That was when, for example, Eddie Van Halen's and Tony Iommi's friendship started. According to Ozzy Osbourne, as he said on his radio show "Ozzy Speaks", Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off stage. Eddie Van Halen] made it look so fucking easy. They outshone us. They blew us off the stage." "Eddie was a great guy. He was always nice with me. He was a lovely man to be around, and Alex (Van Halen). I took all of them down to my local pub… That was fucking great," Ozzy Osbourne said. Eddie Van Halen was a huge Black Sabbath fan and in the early days of his band they used to cover many songs of the British Heavy Metal band. On many occasions, Eddie would even be the main vocalist in those tracks. In an interview with Billboard a few years before he passed away, the musician revealed which were some of his favorite guitar riffs of all time and he mentioned the Sabbath track "Into The Void", originally released on their 1971 album "Master of Reality". He would have the chance a few decades later, in 1994, to help to compose a Black Sabbath song. At the time the band had only two original members: Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, who were accompanied by the vocalist Tony Martin and the drummer Bobby Rondinelli. Eddie was in England and went to visit Iommi in the studio and he ended up helping them to compose the track "Evil Eye".The post Ozzy says Van Halen blew Black Sabbath off the stage appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

David Gilmour said he will never share the stage with Waters again

The legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour is currently promoting his new solo album, Luck and Strange, and, as expected, he has to answer the same question in every interview that he has been asked for decades: When will Pink Floyd reunite? But in a session of questions and answers with The Guardian readers, the musician criticized Roger Waters and said he will never share the stage with someone who supports dictators like Putin and Maduro. The musician said he would love to see Kate Bush touring again. David Gilmour said he will never share the stage with Waters again “(About reunion with Waters) Absolutely not. I tend to steer clear of people who actively support genocidal and autocratic dictators like Putin (Russia) and Maduro (Venezuela). Nothing would make me share a stage with someone who thinks such treatment of women and the LGBT community is OK. On the other hand, I’d love to be back on stage with Rick Wright, who was one of the gentlest and most musically gifted people I’ve ever known.” The musician also talked about Kate Bush, saying: “Kate Bush is the only person who can get Kate Bush back on stage. I think the shows she did in 2014 at the Hammersmith Apollo were some of the best I’ve ever seen. We went several nights. I’ve tried persuading her recently, actually. Gently.” [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_hmXRek_gM[/embed] Next tour dates October 9 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 10 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 11 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 12 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 14 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 15 – Royal Albert Hall, London, England 29 – Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, United States 30 – Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, United States November 4 – Madison Square Garden, New York City, United States 5 – Madison Square Garden, New York City, United States The post David Gilmour said he will never share the stage with Waters again appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

What was Neil Peart’s opinion on Ginger Baker and Cream

What was Neil Peart’s opinion on Ginger Baker and Cream

Considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, Neil Peart was extremely influential especially for Progressive Rock bands that appeared after he joined Rush in the mid-70s. Not only as the incredible drummer he was but also for the incredible lyrics he wrote for the Canadian band, becoming their main lyricist. He is certainly up there alongside the best ones, just like the late legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker. But what was Peart's opinion on Baker and Cream? What was Neil Peart's opinion on Ginger Baker and Cream Like many musicians who were starting their careers in the late 60s and early 70s, Neil Peart was heavily influenced by Cream. The British power trio inspired Rush in their early days, and since Peart was a fan of the band, his influences aligned closely with those of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson when he later joined Rush. In an interview for “Beware Of Mr. Baker" (2012), the documentary about the life and career of the legendary Cream drummer, Neil Peart praised the musician. He even said that Cream was the first Prog Rock band and also that Baker probably made the first Rock drum solo in history. (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage): "When an atomic bomb went off like that (The band), I think Cream really represented, it overwhelmed everything. He was really at the forefront of a complete revolution of Rock. It's hard to find fault with the notion that he was the pioneer of a Rock drummer. There was no context for him, there was no archetype, he is the archetype." Neil Peart continued: [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDDPn4k10WU[/embed] “Cream absolutely might be called the first Progressive band. They were breaking out of the chains of Pop. Ginger Baker’s most notable achievement that should be recognized is the first Rock drum solo. Me as a 15 year-old kid at the time, I was ‘yeah, yeah. That’s the Rock drummer I wanna be," Neil Peart said. It wasn't the first time that Peart praised Baker. He also already talked about his fellow drummer in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2009. He noted that every Rock drummer was somehow influenced by the Cream members. “His playing was revolutionary – extrovert, primal and inventive. He set the bar for what rock drumming could be. I certainly emulated Ginger’s approaches to rhythm – his hard, flat, percussive sound was very innovative. Everyone who came after built on that foundation. Every rock drummer since has been influenced in some way by Ginger. Even if they don’t know it,” Neil Peart said. Ginger Baker passed away in October, 2019, only three months before Neil Peart. The 80 year-old musician died from complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Besides his work with Cream, he had been previously part of bands like Graham Bond Organisation. After Cream he was part of the supergroup Blind Faith, which also had Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. Then Ginger also had success with his own band Ginger Baker's Air Force and then in 1993 he was part of the album BBM, which was a short lived supergroup. The group was formed with his ex-bandmate Jack Bruce and the guitarist Gary Moore. The post What was Neil Peart’s opinion on Ginger Baker and Cream appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
