Israel Fends Off Massive Iranian Missile Barrage

Israel Fends Off Massive Iranian Missile Barrage

At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, the Israeli national alarm system began notifying every phone across the country of an imminent Iranian attack. Israel Home Front Command recommended everyone to remain at home, near their bomb shelters, or try to find cover as quick as possible. By 7 o’clock, the attack was underway as a massive barrage of ballistic missiles from Iran approached Israeli airspace, setting off 1,864 public alert sirens. I was driving on the busy Route 4 in the center of the country, about 20 miles north of Tel Aviv, when the haunting droll of sirens from all directions forced me to pull over and join others in crouching beside a concrete Jersey barrier on the side of the road. The sky looked like a never-ending meteor shower. Several barrages headed for the sea, either overshooting their target or intended for Israel’s Leviathan offshore natural gas platform. Most barrages were intercepted by Israel’s aerial defense system, casting down bits of incendiary debris. Several missiles, however, passed undetected, and I witnessed two land behind mid-rise buildings half a mile away and heard numerous other impact explosions.  The IDF reported over 180 ballistic missiles from Iran, while other news outlets reported close to 400 projectiles total, including rockets from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.  The attack was in retaliation to Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon. Senior Iranian officials told Reuters that the attack was issued by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in response to the recent killings of Hassan Nasrallah, General Abbas Nilforoushan, and Ismail Haniyeh. On Sept. 27, the Israel Air Force (IAF) carried out precision strikes on Hezbollah’s underground headquarters in southern Beirut, killing Hezbollah leader Nasrallah and over 20 other Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officers, including Quds Force commander Nilforoushan. Three days later, on Sept. 30, the IDF launched a limited ground operation into southern Lebanon, the first since 2006, in a campaign to clear out Hezbollah infrastructure along the border that persistently threatens northern Israeli communities. Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, U.S. intelligence at the Pentagon detected from satellite imagery the movement of missiles near launch sites in northwest Iran. American and Israeli intelligence speculated that an attack would happen soon focusing on Israeli military bases, intelligence centers, and the nuclear reactor in the southern city of Dimona — none of which were affected. The only death reported was a Palestinian man near Jericho who was killed by falling shrapnel, while many injuries were reported from people scrambling to find shelter or rush to the nearest bomb shelter.  By 9 p.m., the attack was over. During a security cabinet meeting in a bunker near Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack an utter failure and a “big mistake” on the part of Tehran: “The regime in Iran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our determination to retaliate against our enemies.” Netanyahu gave credit to Israel’s air defense systems, “the most advanced in the world,” for protecting Israeli citizens, thanked the U.S. for its support, and called for the “forces of light in the world” to unite against Tehran and “stand by Israel.” Netanyahu said, “The choice has never been clearer between tyranny and freedom, between blessing and curse.”  Although deemed a failed operation, the attack presented challenges to Israel air defense. Tuesday night marked the second aerial assault carried out on Israel from Iran. The first attack, in April, was carried out with roughly 300 cruise missiles and drones giving Israeli defense hours of warning and preparation. The April attack was also shot down with significant help from U.S. Navy vessels and U.K. and Jordanian aircraft.  Tuesday night’s attack covered a much wider area of the country, with heavier barrages over more highly populated centers, including Jerusalem. Debris from downed missiles is still being collected and analyzed. So far, officials have confirmed that Iran used Fattah-1 and Kheybarshekan missiles that can be launched in larger barrages and traverse the distance between Iran and Israel in roughly 12 minutes, posing a much greater challenge to aerial defense and sufficient civilian warning. Israel used all four tiers of its aerial defense on Tuesday night — the Iron Dome for short-range detection, David’s Sling for medium range, and the Arrow for ballistic interception beyond the earth’s atmosphere.  Tuesday night was not all about the Iranian attack, however. Roughly the same time that missiles soared overhead, two Palestinian terrorists from Hebron carried out a shooting attack at the Tel Aviv light rail station in Jaffa, killing seven and wounding 16. One of the shooters was killed by an armed civilian at the scene and the other wounded.  According to one eyewitness, the shooters first went to the nearby mosque to tell congregants not to come outside, before proceeding to the rail station. They looked unsuspicious and carried their weapons in the open and posed as IDF reservists, many of whom carry their weapons while in civilian clothing. “They didn’t look like terrorists,” one witness said. “One of them had an M16 rifle, and the other one was in a polo shirt, with a hostage pin,” referring to the yellow ribbon pin worn by many in solidarity with the Hamas hostages.  Israel’s general response to Iranian and Hezbollah aggression over the year-long course of the war has been retaliatory and reactionary with singular tit-for-tat attacks. The rapid succession of targeted eliminations of top leaders followed by a ground operation in past weeks, however, is evident of Israel’s shift from reactionary to superior and successful preemptive operations. The U.S., and another unnamed country, however, succeeded in persuading Israel not to retaliate on Iran later that Tuesday night. Netanyahu, nonetheless, has vowed not to let Iran’s actions go unpunished. The post Israel Fends Off Massive Iranian Missile Barrage appeared first on The American Spectator | USA News and Politics.

Jimmy Carter: Why We Don’t Want Sunday School Teachers as Presidents

Jimmy Carter: Why We Don’t Want Sunday School Teachers as Presidents

The other day, an Ohio University emeritus economics professor and senior fellow at the Independent Institute named Richard Vedder wrote in The American Spectator a thank-you note to Jimmy Carter on his 100th birthday — a thank you for his service to his family, God, and country. He spoke of Carter’s “innate niceness,” and his “honesty, loyalty, … sincere concern for others … and strong Christian faith.” Vedder noted Carter’s modest post-presidential lifestyle, including teaching Sunday School and attending church. Vedder also noted that he voted against Carter in 1976 and 1980, agreed that Carter deserved low marks as president, but he lamented that neither presidential candidate in 2024 has the personal qualities that Carter possessed.  Put aside the evidence of Carter’s meanness and ruthlessness during, and in some cases after, his presidency. Put aside his deplorable efforts in 1990 to undermine President George H. W. Bush’s international coalition to evict Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. The simple truth is that we don’t want Sunday School teachers running our government in a very dangerous world. And Jimmy Carter made our world a lot more dangerous when he was president. Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and some American citizens in Israel; the Houthis terror activities in Yemen and the Red Sea; the attacks on Israel by Hezbollah; and the most recent launching by Iran of nearly 200 ballistic missiles against Israel — all can be traced back to Carter’s Iran policy in the late 1970s.  Carter’s Iran policy marked a dramatic shift from every post–World War II American administration. All of Carter’s postwar predecessors understood the importance of having a friendly government in Iran. Truman persuaded the Soviet Union to abandon its control of northern Iran after World War II. Eisenhower responded to a revolution that toppled the Shah from power by intervening covertly to put the Shah back in power. Presidents Kennedy and Johnson recognized the Shah’s value as a bulwark against Soviet encroachments in the Middle East/Persian Gulf region. Presidents Nixon and Ford made the Shah a pillar of U.S. influence in the region per an extended Nixon Doctrine, which relied on client-states to protect U.S. interests. All of this came tumbling down due to the incompetence of Jimmy Carter.  The Iranian Revolution that resulted in fundamentalist Islamic clerics seizing power in Iran was, in the words of Norman Podhoretz, “an unrecognized harbinger” of our 45-year struggle against Islamofascism. Jeane Kirkpatrick was one of the first observers to recognize this in her brilliant essay “Dictatorships and Double Standards,” which appeared in the November 1979 issue of Commentary. In the lead-up to the Shah’s overthrow, she wrote, “[T]he Carter administration not only failed to prevent the undesired outcome, it actively collaborated in the replacement of [a] moderate autocrat friendly to American interests with [a] less friendly autocrat of extremist persuasion.” Moreover, Kirkpatrick noted, the new Iranian regime was “hostile to American interests and policies in the world.” Perhaps Carter believed having a friendly regime in Iran was not that important anymore since he announced to the world in his first major foreign policy speech that the United States was “now free of that inordinate fear of communism which once led us to embrace any dictator who joined us in that fear.” Carter famously launched a “human rights” campaign, but in Iran, Nicaragua, and later Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion, human rights worsened as a result of Carter’s incompetence. Kirkpatrick wrote that Carter’s foreign policy “fails not for lack of good intentions but for lack or realism.” The Sunday School teacher failed because good intentions are meaningless in international relations. The personal qualities so admired by Professor Vedder has us today on the brink of World War III. Donald Trump, who Vedder appears to dislike (he doesn’t appear to like Kamala Harris either), may lack some of the personal qualities of Carter, but his presidency produced four years of peace and prosperity, marred only by the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed on the world by communist China.  So, thanks President Carter — for nothing. Kamala Harris Goes to Border. All Hat. No Policy.

Kamala Harris Goes to Border. All Hat. No Policy.

WASHINGTON — Last week, the Department of Homeland Security delivered alarming news to Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, about the number of noncitizens with serious criminal records inside U.S. borders. There were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal histories on ICE’s docket as of July 21, DHS Deputy Director Patrick J. Lechleitner wrote to Gonzales. More than 435,000 are convicted criminals, including 13,099 convicted of homicide, 15,811 convicted of sexual assault, and more than 11,000 convicted of other sexual offenses. Another 222,141 noncitizens face pending criminal charges. Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the phenomenon at Monday’s White House daily briefing. He said, “13,000 people who’ve been convicted of murder crossed the border illegally and are living among us. So how much danger are U.S. communities in right now because of this?” The press secretary scolded Doocy for making “false representation,” told him to communicate “in a way that is not confusing the American people” — and she used the word “lying.” I’d say Doocy didn’t convey what the DHS letter was about. The 435,719 individuals on ICE’s nondetained docket “are already here” for other crimes, Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies told me. That’s a big number for people who shouldn’t still be here because they’ve violated federal immigration law and state laws. For his part, Donald Trump says that if he is elected in November, he would deport all undocumented migrants — which is unimaginable. With millions of people in the United States illegally, many of them having put down roots over decades, it’s not possible — or desirable — for the government to deport every adult here illegally. “They can’t detain everyone,” Vaughan noted. But deporting noncitizens with serious criminal records who prey on others — that’s just common sense. The Department of Homeland Security has pointed out that some of the nondetained criminals may have medical issues or be held in state prison today. But as Vaughan pointed out, if they’re in state prison, that means they committed additional crimes. Why isn’t the government doing a better job? There are obstacles to deporting criminals, including “recalcitrant” countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and China that prefer to leave their criminals in the United States. But a bureaucracy serious about enforcing the law can do better. Not just give up. The biggest impediment has been a lack of will in Washington, and that’s where Vice President Kamala Harris comes in. On Friday, Harris went to Douglas, Arizona, to explain how she was going to “fix our broken immigration system.” Her best start would have been an apology, an admission that she was wrong to support sanctuary city policies in San Francisco and California when she was a prosecutor and state attorney general. As the DHS letter noted, “‘[S]anctuary’ policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, who often victimize (immigrant) communities.” Harris also could have offered an acknowledgment that in their zeal to appear morally superior, she and Biden embraced rhetoric that encouraged desperate people to risk their health and safety in the hopes that they’d be able to cross the U.S. border illegally without legal consequences. From May 2023 through July 2024, DHS removed nearly 900,000 individuals — and yet, the number of illegal immigrants on the nondetained docket exceeded 7 million in Fiscal Year 2023. It was 3.3 million before Biden took office, according to the Associated Press. Now it’s 2024. So instead of explaining why she has soured on the sanctuary concept — um, she wants to be president — Harris repeated stock phrases about “understanding how solutions get formed,” “actually doing the work of fixing a problem,” and wanting “to fix a problem instead of running on a problem.” Also: “The American people deserve a president who cares more about border security than playing political games and their personal political future.” Which means voters should not vote for Kamala Harris.
