Election Day Can’t Come Fast Enough
Let’s be honest, we all know vice presidential debates are totally useless. Last night was probably no different. But it was a breath of fresh air.
Apparently, two political candidates allegedly from the extreme ends of their political aisles can meet on a debate stage and behave civilly. They can even debate policy. It’s actually a shocking enough development to label it a minor political miracle. (RELATED: Vance Outclasses Walz in Debate That Validates His Selection)
But why?
I have a theory — and it’s not that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is a nice midwestern grandpa or that Sen. J.D. Vance is a charismatic weirdo — it’s that both of them are actually somewhat politically competent individuals. One of the odd things politically competent individuals have noticed is that the American people are tired of politics.
You could blame COVID-19, the apocalyptic language surrounding Jan. 6 in the liberal media, or our aid to two nations fighting two wars that could spiral out of control. You might even blame the mindblowing speed of the news cycle. For example, in just the last couple of days, we’ve had a historic labor strike at the nation’s docks, a hurricane that caused devastating damage in southern states and killed more than a hundred Americans by the latest counts, and now Iran is firing missiles at Israel and trying to start World War III. The last thing Americans want to watch is two political candidates engaging in petty name-calling. So Walz and Vance tried to avoid the petty name-calling.
Vance did a great job. He looked calm, cool, and collected — one might even think he was actually comfortable up there on the debate stage. He spoke confidently. Perhaps most importantly, he said things that resonated with Americans, and he pinned the blame for bad things happening in the world on Kamala Harris. He didn’t make a mistake.
Tim Walz was clearly nervous (I mean, just watch the guy’s hands throughout the debate, he didn’t know what to do with them), and I kinda of felt bad for him. He misspoke and stuttered during the first half of the debate, but recovered decently well when asked about abortion. He looked and felt like an ordinary Joe up on a debate stage. As Scott McKay said, he didn’t do too badly, but next to Vance, he looked bad.
But regardless of how well they did at the debate (and they can both give themselves a pat on the back for it), it won’t break the mold and actually matter. It won’t budge the polls. That’s because, even though it was the last time these men or their presidential partners will face each other before Nov. 5 (assuming no sudden changes of heart), Americans were probably not really paying attention. That’s not just because most of them have already made up their minds, it’s because there are more important things to pay attention to.
The fact is, I think most of us are just ready for Nov. 5, to come and go. Most of us have already made up our minds and we’re ready to tune out of the political conversation, enjoy some apple cider, walk through a corn maze, and grumble about the sheer number of leaves we have to rake from our lawns. We’re all just hoping that whatever happens, either in the election or in the broader world, won’t drastically change our lives for the worse.
