Internet Loses Its Collective Mind When Clip Shows What A Parrot Tongue Looks Like
There’s a reason why parrots are such popular pets. In fact, there are quite a few reasons. These talkative birds are known for being both intelligent and loving. They tend to bond closely with their humans, and their lifespans are actually comparable to our own. Even if you don’t want a parrot of your own, videos of these adorable birds make it easy to understand why others might want one. The video I’m about to share with you is not one of them.
This is no hate at all to parrots or those who own them. It’s just that, well, most folks are not aware that the tongue of a parrot is quite a weird sight. Unless you have a parrot yourself, there’s a good chance that this is news to you. But hearing about their weird tongue is not enough to understand. Check out the video below to see it for yourself — if you dare!
“I preferred 20 seconds ago when I was unaware,” someone admits in response to that video, with another adding, “Sharing is not always caring.”
This video was shared by the Wine Country Veterinary Hospital. This might have you thinking, “Ah, so that’s why their tongue looks so weird. The bird is sick!” However, the vet was quick to clarify that this bird is 100% healthy and was only in for a checkup — which leads us to ask why on Earth that is considered a normal parrot tongue…
So, Why Does a Healthy Parrot Tongue Look Like That?
You know how we use our fingers to grab things and interact with the world around us? Well, parrots use their tongues. In fact, it seems that their tongues contain a series of bones that make them both rigid and flexible. This aids in their ability to grab and move objects. There is also evidence that the parrot tongue greatly aids in their ability to mimic humans.

Plus, according to the vet, “the tongue tip has tiny hair-like structures called papillae. During feeding, they stand on end (like bristles on a brush), allowing nectar and pollen to be soaked up!” So, while the parrot tongue is quite disturbing, parrots truly wouldn’t be themselves without them. That said, the general consensus is that it’s best if they keep their tongues to themselves…
“I could’ve went my entire life without seeing this,” someone admits, another chiming in, “Some things aren’t my business… this is one of them.”
