You Could Hear A Pin Drop: Basketball Crowd Goes Completely Silent For The Perfect Moment
On March 22, 2022, a silent basketball crowd watched as blind hooper Julie Hoogland sank a free throw. Video of the shot has gone viral on many news and social media outlets. Julie was a Zeeland East High School Unified Sports basketball team member.

The shot was possible only because the crowd of 2500 people remained quiet. Using a wooden broom handle, a person tapped on the back support of the basketball hoop. The metronomic tapping allowed Julie to “hear” where the basket was. She aimed and made a perfect shot.
The silent basketball crowd erupted with cheers as the ball sailed through the net. Fans from both teams cheered for Julie, who blushed a bit from the attention. The shy 17-year-old admitted to Fox News, “I didn’t think I would make it. My hope is I can educate people that blind people are more than just blind.”

Julie was born with sight but slowly lost it until she was wholly blind at age 3. The determined youngster began hooping in middle school. Practice and determination led her to the moment she sank that free throw.
The Zeeland team includes disabled and able-bodied students to unify students through sports. The assembly was the team’s final appearance for that school year. Julie’s free throw made history and demonstrated that all things are possible with determination and dedication.
Julie has a long history of working to educate people about the capabilities of disabled persons. In 2010, at just 6, she was recognized for teaching other students how a blind person uses a cane to navigate the halls at school.
We don’t think this is the last we’ll hear about this young lady.
Please share Julie’s incredible story.
