Man Sings For Wild Okapi And “The Most Amazing Thing Happened”

Some wild animals apparently love music, as one performer found out while singing for an okapi. During a visit to the Zoo Bassin d’Arcachon in La Teste-de-Buch, France, this man had the opportunity to play some tunes for the resident creatures. One animal’s reaction to his cover of Radiohead’s Creep particularly touched his heart. He shared his magical moment with this okapi in a video on social media. In the clip, the musician sang a soulful rendition of the 1990’s hit while accompanying himself on guitar. At first, it looked like he was playing to an empty animal enclosure, but an inquisitive okapi soon stepped into frame. Although the critter seemed a little hesitant at first, he quickly gathered the courage to get closer. Eventually, the okapi walked right up to the human! Please be aware that there are some NSFW lyrics in the video below. In fact, he seemed to be a little curious as to how the human was making these sounds in the first place. Cautiously, the okapi began investigating everything from the musician’s hat to his guitar. This singer was totally surprised by the animal’s reaction! “Okapis are wild animals so I was told that it was very unlikely that he would come close,” the man wrote over the video. What exactly is an okapi? Screengrab from Instagram If you’d never heard of an okapi before watching this video, that’s ok. These unique creatures don’t come up in conversation every day! However, they’re definitely worth getting acquainted with. Here are a few things you should know about these animals! According to National Geographic, the okapi is sometimes referred to as the “forest giraffe.” They’re actually relatives of these long-necked critters, and they come from the Democratic Republic of Congo. These rainforest-dwellers stick to a vegetarian diet, which they digest using their four stomachs. Sadly, the okapi is considered an endangered animal. Poaching and deforestation have been chipping away at their numbers significantly for the past 20 years. Thankfully, though, the Okapi Conservation Project is doing what it can to keep these creatures from going extinct.
