Island City Decimated By Hurricane Helene, Resident Says ‘Completely Gone’

Cedar Key, a beloved island city and tourist destination on the Florida Gulf Coast, was pummeled by Hurricane Helene. According to FOX 35 Orlando, the small town faced an 8-foot storm surge and has a long recovery after the Category 4 hurricane’s destruction. Images and videos circulating from the gulf island are horrific: Cedar Key pic.twitter.com/3ip7QiYG4M — The Beach From Florida (@BeachFrmFL) September 27, 2024 Pieces of homes are widely scattered around Cedar Key, which was slammed with over 10 feet of storm surge last night. The first floor of multi-story buildings have largely been swept away by the record breaking surge wrought by #Helene and its massive wind field. #FLwx pic.twitter.com/1oQbIotfdW — WeatherNation (@WeatherNation) September 27, 2024 #CedarKey after #HurricanwHelene @jpetramala #StormSurge #hurricane #damage #aftermath pic.twitter.com/QpxybBYMNr — WxChasing- Brandon Clement (@bclemms) September 27, 2024 “Started the morning off in Cedar Key with Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum. We walked through the town and assessed the damage. It’s heartbreaking to see so many homes and businesses destroyed by this storm, but we’re in this together, and I will fight alongside you every step of the way to get you the federal resources you need,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said. Started the morning off in Cedar Key with Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum. We walked through the town and assessed the damage. State Road 24 leading into Cedar Key is lined with downed trees and standing water. The Levy County Sheriff’s Office is still in rescue and recovery mode, closely monitoring traffic onto the island as they assess the damage caused by Helene’s nearly 100 mph winds and 12-foot storm surge. Carol Carlin, a Cedar Key resident, kept an eye on her home through a surveillance camera during the storm. “I knew it was just going to get worse and worse,” Carlin said. “The water didn’t stop rising until about 1:30.” The Carlins have yet to return home, but based on reports from neighbors, they expect their house to be severely damaged. “Hurricane Helene crashed into Florida’s Big Bend region Thursday night as a massive Category 4 storm. Michael Presley Bobbitt, 48, rode out the storm on Cedar Key. He says entire homes are missing or flattened, and calls the destruction much worse than he had imagined as the storm hit overnight,” MLive wrote. WATCH: USA TODAY also shared footage of the destruction on Cedar Key. WATCH: Per Daily Mail: Michael Bobbitt, 48, was one of those who decided to stay behind. ‘We’re feeling pretty gut-punched here in Cedar Key. When we were fighting this in the night, however bad we thought it would be, it’s much worse in the light of day. ‘Cedar Key as we know it is completely gone,’ he told The New York Times. ‘Entire houses have been picked up and moved away. We had to go through four feet of water to get to them. The post office is destroyed.’ ‘Several restaurants are destroyed. The Jiffy Food Store is destroyed. Vehicles are smashed in and turned upside down. Everything is impassable. It looks like a nuclear bomb went off.’ The storm made landfall on Thursday and brought with it a storm surge that reportedly hit four feet on the small island in the Gulf of Mexico. As the residents that stayed on the island woke on Friday morning, they discovered the island had been stripped bare by the winds, with debris littering the streets. #hurricanehelene in Cedar Key, #Florida. @jpetramala pic.twitter.com/OuRtsUFvhB — WxChasing- Brandon Clement (@bclemms) September 27, 2024 “At least 44 people are dead just 24 hours after Hurricane Helene first made landfall in Florida,” WLTReport noted. “The death toll comes as Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas,” the outlet added.

Effort By GOP-Led State To Purge Voter Rolls Of Noncitizens Prompts Justice Department Lawsuit

The Department of Justice has sued the State of Alabama and the Alabama Secretary of State for allegedly purging noncitizens from its voter rolls too close to November’s general election. “The Justice Department announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against the State of Alabama and the Alabama Secretary of State to challenge a systematic State program aimed at removing voters from its election rolls too close to the Nov. 5 general election, in violation of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA),” the Justice Department stated in a press release. “As Election Day approaches, it is critical that Alabama redress voter confusion resulting from its list maintenance mailings sent in violation of federal law. Officials across the country should take heed of the National Voter Registration Act’s clear and unequivocal restrictions on systematic list maintenance efforts that fall within 90 days of an election. The Quiet Period Provision of federal law exists to prevent eligible voters from being removed from the rolls as a result of last-minute, error-prone efforts. The Justice Department will continue to use all the tools it has available to ensure that the voting rights of every eligible voter are protected,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. According to The Guardian, Wes Allen, Alabama’s Republican secretary of state, in August announced an initiative “to remove noncitizens registered to vote in Alabama.” Justice Department Sues Alabama for Violating Federal Law’s Prohibition on Systematic Efforts to Remove Voters Within 90 Days of an Election : https://t.co/5vFAY6oKIq pic.twitter.com/CqVo9b9yzr — DOJ Civil Rights Division (@CivilRights) September 27, 2024 Allen said he identified “3,251 individuals who are registered to vote in Alabama who have been issued noncitizen identification numbers by the Department of Homeland Security.” Thousands Of Non-Citizens Found Registered To Vote In GOP-Led State “The Secretary announced today that he is instructing the Boards of Registrars in all 67 counties to immediately inactivate and initiate steps necessary to remove all individuals who are not United States Citizens,” Allen’s office stated in a press release. “I have been clear that I will not tolerate the participation of noncitizens in our elections,” Allen said. “I have even gone so far as to testify before a United States Senate Committee regarding the importance of this issue. We have examined the current voter file in an attempt to identify anyone who appears on that list that has been issued a noncitizen identification number,” he added. ?New: Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has discovered thousands of non-citizens who were registered to vote in the State of Alabama. pic.twitter.com/bQPNTazHc3 — The Calvin Coolidge Project (@TheCalvinCooli1) August 16, 2024 From The Guardian: The lawsuit asks for injunctive relief that would restore the ability of affected eligible voters to vote on 5 November. “I was elected secretary of state by the people of Alabama, and it is my constitutional duty to ensure that only American citizens vote in our elections,” Allen said in a statement issued on Friday night. He said he could not comment on pending litigation. Allen in August acknowledged the possibility that some of the people identified had become naturalized citizens since receiving their noncitizen number. He said they would need to update their information on a state voter registration form and would be able to vote after it was verified. The Campaign Legal Center, the Fair Elections Center and the Southern Poverty Law Center earlier this month filed a lawsuit also challenging the voter roll purge. They said the state purge targets naturalized citizens who once had noncitizen identification numbers before gaining citizenship. Alabama illegally purged voters too close to election, Justice Department says https://t.co/S7vG7fbjle — Axios (@axios) September 27, 2024 DOJ SUES Alabama For Removing illegal Voters! The Department of Justice yesterday announced they are suing the state of Alabama and Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen after they removed illegal voters from the state rolls, citing a violation of law that does not allow voters… pic.twitter.com/QmCIG8sRpz — Conservative Brief (@ConservBrief) September 28, 2024 Per the Department of Justice: Section 8(c)(2) of the NVRA, also known as the Quiet Period Provision, requires states to complete systematic programs aimed at removing the names of ineligible voters from voter registration lists by no later than 90 days before federal elections. The Quiet Period Provision applies to certain systematic programs carried out by states that are aimed at striking names from voter registration lists based on a perceived failure to meet initial eligibility requirements — including citizenship — at the time of registration. The Quiet Period is an important protection for voters, because systematic removal programs may be error-ridden, cause voter confusion and remove eligible voters days or weeks before Election Day who may be unable to correct the state’s errors in time to vote or may be dissuaded from voting at all. States may remove names from official lists of voters in various ways and for various reasons, but they may not carry-on this kind of systematic removal program so close to a federal election. On Aug. 13, the Secretary of State announced the launch of a “process to remove noncitizens registered to vote in Alabama.” This was 84 days before the Nov. 5 general election. The Justice Department’s review found that both native-born and naturalized U.S. citizens have received letters stating that their voter record has been made inactive and that they have been placed on a path for removal from Alabama’s statewide voter registration list. The letter directs recipients who are in fact U.S. citizens and eligible to vote to complete and submit an attached State of Alabama Voter Registration Form. In turn, that form instructs that people may not register to vote in the 14 days before an election. This systematic voter removal program, which the State is conducting within 90 days of the upcoming federal election, violates the Quiet Period Provision.

Boise State Women’s Volleyball Forfeits Game To Protect Players From Trans Opponent: Report

The Boise State women’s volleyball team announced on Friday that it would forfeit its match over the weekend against San Jose State. “Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 28,” the team said in a statement. “Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State.” The team, 8-5 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference, will play their next game against Air Force on October 3. Outkick sports reporter David Hookstead said that sources told him that the team forfeited the game “because the team’s best player is a male.” “Sources close to the situation tell me the players have the complete support of the school, coaches and parents,” he added. James Risch (R-ID). “Idaho’s hardworking, talented female athletes deserve a fair playing field where they can compete and WIN.” Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) posted on X: “The safety of Idaho’s female athletes is paramount to the appeasement of a woke agenda. @BoiseState made the right call.” Rep. Russ Fulcher (R-ID) said on social media that men should not be allowed to compete against women in sports. “I commend @BoiseState for their decision to protect women in sports and ensure a level playing field for their athletes!” he added.

Kittens Show Up in Garden, Navigating Around, Little Do They Know Their World is About to Get A Lot Better

Three kittens showed up in a garden, trying to navigate their way around. Little did they know, their world was about to get a whole lot better. Nova and NellieAnneThree kittens appeared in the garden of some kind-hearted residents earlier this month, with no mother in sight. They were hungry, scrounging around for food.Knowing the kittens needed help, the residents gave them food and water and contacted their local rescue. Volunteers at Kat Zoekt Thuis immediately responded to the request and swiftly brought the trio to safety."When they arrived to me, they were completely overwhelmed," Anne, a foster volunteer for the rescue, shared with Love Meow. Nellie and NapoleonAnneNapoleon, the black-and-white kitten, was the bravest of all, emerging from hiding as he could no longer resist the smell of food. His siblings, Nova (black) and Nellie (tabby), were very timid, nestling in the shadows of their "cave," wide-eyed."It didn't take long for Napoleon to show me he wasn't as frightened as the other two. By the next morning, he'd already figured out I was the lady with the food." Nova was the most timid at first but became bolder over timeAnneHe rose from his nap to greet Anne with renewed enthusiasm while his siblings curiously watched from the cave. "Napoleon is a big foodie, devouring his wet food in seconds. I'm so relieved knowing he'll never have to go hungry again."Soon, Nova and Nellie mustered the courage to poke their heads out, cautiously peeking around the room. Nova and NellieAnneThey surveyed the area, tilting their heads hesitantly, attuned to every creak and rustle. Their bodies remained hidden, tucked safely away. "Their progress is on a completely different timeline than Napoleon."Nellie, the smallest and shyest of the bunch, needed extra time and reassurance to adapt to the new environment, but when she discovered her favorite treats, she became more willing to come out to eat. Nellie loves her treatsAnneNova was the most timid at first but became bolder and more curious and even approached Anne for a sniff test. "If he gets unsure, he'll swat or nibble my hand."Now, mealtime has become a socializing opportunity where Anne pets them gently, building a positive experience with human contact. AnneWith the help of their favorite snacks, Napoleon has ventured out of his nest to explore. He joins his foster mom on the couch, putting his paws on her lap, a sign of approval, as he gobbles down his delectables."Napoleon has turned into a total cuddle bug, always wanting to snuggle on the couch and purring nonstop." Napoleon has blossomed into a snuggle bugAnne"Their favorite thing, without a doubt, is food. All three were extremely underweight when they arrived, and the lack of nutrition had stunted their growth, making them much smaller than they should be.""Now, they're food-obsessed and would eat until they got sick if I let them. So I have to carefully manage their portions and gradually bring them to a healthy weight." AnneIt's been about ten days since the trio found their way indoors. Nova and Nellie still have a way to go with socialization, but through patience and love, they are slowly coming around.Nellie's eyes widen at the sight of her treats. She comes out for food, edging closer to her human each day. Her progress may be slow, measured in inches, but trust is steadily taking root. AnneWith Nova, it's a slow dance of affection and attitude - one step towards trust, two sassy steps back. "I'm determined we'll be friends in the end."With a kind human catering to their every whim, the trio has warmed up to their new life of cozy naps and delicious treats. AnneThey are leaving their old worries behind, trading the harsh streets for a future filled with love and endless head scratches. AnneShare this story with your friends.
