Majority of Americans Admit to ‘Self-Silencing’ on Hot-Button Issues, Survey Finds

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—Nearly two-thirds of Americans conceal their political opinions on contentious issues in public, according to a new Populace Research/YouGov survey. Most Americans, 58%, said they cannot express their private opinions publicly, and 61% admit to “self-silencing” their political views, according to the survey. At the same time, Americans publicly claim to have higher trust in our institutions than they do in private. Only 36% of Democrats publicly said that they trust the government to tell the truth, but only 5% agreed with the statement in private, according to the survey. Similarly, 42% of Democrats publicly report that they trust the media to tell the truth, while just 9% reiterated this belief in private. Skepticism is even more apparent among Republicans, with 14% publicly saying they trust the government to tell the truth while just 2% hold this belief privately, according to the study. At the same time, just 16% of Republicans publicly trust the media to tell the truth, while just 3% agreed with the statement in private. Social+Pressure+IndexDownload Just 37% of Americans publicly believe that we live in a mostly fair society, while just 7% privately agree with the sentiment, according to the survey. While polarization is at the forefront of many political conversations, the study reveals Americans privately agree on many issues. The vast majority of Americans, 90%, are privately on the “same side” of roughly two-thirds of political issues ranging from abortion to school choice and legal immigration, according to the survey. When it comes to defunding the police, 28% of Gen Z and 27% of Democrats publicly supported the movement, according to the survey. However, only 2% of Gen Z and 3% of Democrats privately support the same movement, which parallels the 1% support among Baby Boomers and Republicans. The Populace Research/YouGov study surveyed 19,879 respondents from May 16 to June 24. Mount Nebo: An Unparalleled View of Ancient History

The River Jordan has shaped humanity’s story, and though it was once a much larger river it remains an artery through lands where history and religion rub against each other, past Biblical sites which touch the lives of Jesus and prophets. It is the subject of History Hit film The Jordan: A River Through Time (released 26 September) presented by historian Dan Snow, who begins his exploration of the early centuries of Christianity at Mount Nebo in modern Jordan. From Mount Nebo, a prominent hill 700 metres above sea level, a vast panorama of the surrounding landscape is revealed – including its cherished, ancient features. “People talk about the Holy Land,” says Dan Snow in the film. “Well, this is it. I’m looking down at the geography of this region, but we’re also looking at history just over there in those clouds.” The Jordan: A River Through TimeImage Credit: History Hit On a clear day, Jerusalem is visible 30 miles away. Meanwhile to the south is Bethlehem, and before them is the Dead Sea and the green fields of the Jordan River valley. Should you follow the valley north, you would arrive at the Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Tiberias. Provided the conditions are right, Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world with evidence of human settlement dating back 12,000 years, can be seen from Mount Nebo. “What a place to get a sense of the geography, the history and the interlocking religions of this region.” The Jordan: A River Through TimeImage Credit: History Hit Mount Nebo is a site closely connected with the Old Testament and the story of Moses, Dan explains. “And this really is the perfect standpoint. This is where Moses was brought and shown the promised land on the far bank of the Jordan for the first time shortly before his death.” “Mount Nebo’s connection with Moses drew pilgrims here, particularly as the Roman Empire adopted Christianity in the 4th century and morphed into what we call the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire, with its capital in Constantinople.” An astonishing window into rural life The church on top of Mount Nebo contains extraordinary pictorial evidence of what this region was like when Byzantine Christianity flourished there 1,500 years ago. Inside the church is a remarkably preserved mosaic which depicts rural life in this region in the 6th century AD. The Jordan: A River Through TimeImage Credit: History Hit “It was commissioned by a couple of imperial administrators for this important religious site, this place of pilgrimage,” Dan explains. “It shows beautiful fruit trees, a range of animals and hunting. You get a man on horseback attacking a wild boar with a dog. A couple of figures are fighting lions. One person is just resting, pondering beneath the fruit tree.” “And at the bottom you have these figures that are dressed and shown to be from elsewhere: a dark skinned African taking an ostrich on a leash, and perhaps someone from Phrygia, someone from Anatolia, with a spotty camel and a zebra.” “This is an astonishing window into what rural life was like in this holy land 1,500 years ago.” Watch The Jordan: A River Through Time and more original films by signing up to History Hit. Police Dog Steals Co-worker’s Lunch But Doesn’t Face Any Charges Because He’s Too Cute

Police Dog Steals Co-worker’s Lunch But Doesn’t Face Any Charges Because He’s Too Cute

We guess criminals also come in all shapes and sizes – apparently, some have cute faces and wagging tails! And K9 Ice of the Wyandotte Police Department (WPD) in Michigan is certainly one of the few out there with a cute face and a wagging tail who go out of their way to commit a crime, inside the workplace, nonetheless! “Stealing is not only a crime but it is morally wrong too. Some jobs, like that of being a police officer, require you to take an oath prior to starting. Within the officer’s sworn oath is the promise to protect person’s property,” the Wyandotte Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. The Wyandotte Police Department proceeds to explain that one of their officer, Officer Barwig, was eating lunch in the breakroom when he was called to assist someone in the WPD jail. “He quickly jumped into service, leaving his half eaten lunch on the table,” WPD recounts the story. “A short while later Barwig and another officer returned to the breakroom only to find Ofc. Ice leisurely strolling out of the room licking his chops. Barwig’s entire lunch was gone….disappeared, vanished!” WPD reveals that K9 Ice invoked his fifth amendment right to remain silent, but is quite frankly not cooperating with the Police Department’s investigation. Furthermore, WPD reveals that K9 Ice isn’t very much a good boy, especially when food is involved. They wrote, “He has a history of rummaging through trash cans that are within his reach. There have been several other accusations of him taking food right from coworker’s hands as they walk by.” The incident happened on January 2023 but it is once again going viral after online users found the criminal, K9 Ice’s, crime and mugshot a little too adorable. Talk about pretty privilege, huh? The public rallied behind K9 Ice and truly believed him to be innocent. One user wrote, “There is no evidence! Last I heard, “licking chops” is not a crime!” Another user said, “Innocent! Lunch was not clearly marked with officers name or badge #.” While another user wrote “I just want to say that he is also guilty of stealing my heart. He is one smooth operator. Look at that face, good luck getting a conviction! You guys are out to lunch.” In an update on K9 Ice’s case, WPD revealed that “dozens of attorneys” have offered to defend the police dog Pro Bono for his crime. “We have been threatened with massive protests if we move forward with our investigation and/or charges,” the Police Department wrote. WPD also reveals that the public just doesn’t believe K9 Ice to be guilty and that no video of him stealing any of his co-workers food has been produced. “That being said Ofc Ice will not face any internal discipline or criminal charges,” the Police Department concluded. Aside from the charges being dropped, K9 also received a custom-made sandwich from one of his local supporters “because they felt like he wasn’t being fed enough.” After the charges were dropped and the case was closed, the public still demanded updates about the “innocent” police officer. One user wrote, “I vote for regular updates from Ofc Ice! The public needs to be aware of the shenanigans he has to deal with, like being falsely accused!”
