Heart Tissue Ages Faster in Space, Scientists Find

Researchers from Johns Hopkins Medical Center conducted a groundbreaking study by sending human heart tissue to the International Space Station (ISS) to examine how low gravity affects heart health. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. After 30 days of observation, the researchers detected notable changes in the heart tissue, offering new insights into the potential health risks of long-term space travel and opening doors to novel treatments for heart disease. Led by Professor Deok-Ho Kim, the team engineered heart tissue from human stem cells, placing it on small chips designed to replicate the heart’s environment. These tissues were launched to the ISS in March 2020 aboard the SpaceX CRS-20 mission. While in orbit, the heart tissue was closely monitored, and samples were taken for further analysis. The results were unexpected: heart tissue in space exhibited a significantly diminished ability to contract and displayed irregular heartbeat patterns. Additionally, molecular and genetic changes resembling those associated with aging were observed. These findings suggest that prolonged exposure to low gravity could have serious effects on the heart, which must be considered when planning extended space missions, such as future trips to Mars. Furthermore, these changes may contribute to the development of new heart disease treatments, both in space and on Earth. Professor Kim’s team is now testing various drugs on heart tissue in space to determine if they can mitigate the negative effects of low gravity. They are also refining their tissue chip technology and investigating the impact of space radiation on heart tissue. Westie Lung Disease: Our Vet Discusses Signs, Diagnosis & Treatment

Click to Skip Ahead What Is Westie Lung Disease? Signs Causes Diagnosis Care Guide Frequently Asked Questions West Highland White Terriers, or Westies, are lovable and energetic dogs. Unfortunately, they seem to be predisposed to a lung condition known as Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, which is also known as Westie Lung Disease. What Is Westie Lung Disease or Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis? Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, also known as Westie Lung Disease, is a form of interstitial lung disease. Most diagnosed cases involve dogs of Westie descent, but they are not the only breeds with a higher-than-average number of affected population members. Other breeds that may be overrepresented by Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis include: Jack Russell Terriers Cairn Terriers Staffordshire Bull Terriers Westie Lung Disease occurs spontaneously, with the affected dog’s body depositing collagen in the lungs and even mineralizing the tissues. The lungs scar and thicken, so affected dogs cannot breathe as well as a dog without Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Gas exchange, essentially swapping oxygen for carbon dioxide, needs to occur in these areas of the lungs so your dog’s oxygenation capabilities decrease. Typically, affected Westies are older, although the condition has been reported in young adult dogs. Some studies have found it in dogs as young as three years old. People can also develop Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, so researchers are studying canine cases to look for similarities in how the disease develops and investigate possible treatment options. Image Credit: Elena Sineglazova, Shutterstock What Are the Signs of Westie Lung Disease? Dogs with Westie Lung Disease have trouble breathing and difficulties with oxygen exchange. It is much more of an effort for them to breathe than a dog that isn’t affected by pulmonary fibrosis. Signs you must see include: Tachypnea (increased respiratory rate) Increased respiratory effort Coughing Weakness Exercise intolerance or getting winded easily Blue gums or mucus membranes which can indicate hypoxia Pulmonary hypertension is commonly associated with pulmonary fibrosis. With this condition, high blood pressure develops, particularly in the lungs. Signs of pulmonary hypertension in dogs include: Heart murmur Coughing Distended jugular veins Coughing or spitting up blood You might hear your dog wheezing when breathing, but this is especially noticeable during lung auscultation. Your veterinarian might also hear crackles or a sound that people describe as Velcro. Westie Lung Disease is typically progressive. Your dog may have minimal signs at the start, but over time, many dogs have to be euthanized due to difficulty breathing or a poor quality of life. What Are the Causes of Westie Lung Disease? We don’t know what the underlying cause of Westie Lung Disease is, but exposure to respiratory irritants could be a contributing cause. Genetics are likely a significant contributing factor to Westies’ developing pulmonary fibrosis. However, researchers have yet to figure out the mice of inheritance for the condition. Other possible factors, such as the dog’s sex, don’t seem to be a contributor. Potential causes of pulmonary fibrosis in dogs in general include: Exposure to pollutants, particularly inhaled ones Medications like amiodarone Connective tissue disorders Pulmonary or lung infections Studies into pulmonary fibrosis show that the lungs can develop scarring as a healing method. The lungs are trying to repair themselves and lay down scar tissue, which thickens the usually very thin alveoli. Diagnosing Westie Lung Disease in Your Dog Image Credit: Itxu, Shutterstock Diagnosing Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis can be challenging, although if you have a Westie with trouble breathing, it should be on the list of differential diagnoses. Your veterinarian will listen to your dog’s heart and lungs. This part of the exam is essential because your dog could have a heart murmur and be in congestive heart failure rather than suffering from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Your veterinarian will likely recommend blood work and radiographs (X-rays) to look for metabolic changes and abnormalities in the appearance of the heart and lungs. Other tests your veterinarian will likely recommend in their office or with a specialist include: An electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) An echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) An airway bronchoscopy or scoping to visualize the airways A bronchoalveolar lavage to check for abnormal cells or bacteria To confirm a Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis diagnosis, your veterinary team would need a lung biopsy. This invasive testing is not usually performed outside of a necropsy (animal autopsy), so your veterinarian will likely rule out major cardiac and pulmonary conditions and treat your dog accordingly. How Do I Care for a Dog With Westie Lung Disease? Unfortunately, Westie Lung Disease is incurable. Most dogs have advanced disease when they are symptomatic and subsequently diagnosed. Treatment is therefore geared to helping alleviate the signs of pulmonary fibrosis. Your veterinarian might prescribe corticosteroids like prednisone to decrease lung inflammation. Temaril-P, a medication that combines a steroid with a cough suppressant, would be another consideration. Bronchodilators like theophylline relax the smooth muscles in the lungs, which can reduce coughing and help your dog breathe better. Research is ongoing to find other possible treatments. One drug showing promise is sobetirome. This compound has an anti-fibrotic effect. You’ll need to monitor your dog’s breathing regularly. These dogs can develop hypoxia much easier than a healthy dog, so exercises that might seem less stressful could significantly impact your Westie’s ability to breathe. You should also limit their exposure to heat, which could easily lead to heat stroke or possible airway irritants that could exacerbate your dog’s difficulties. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Is Westie Lung Disease contagious? Image Credit: anetapics, Shutterstock Westie Lung Disease is not contagious, but it may be genetic. You don’t need to worry about your other dogs contracting the illness from your Westie (although it would be possible, in theory, for your other dog to spontaneously develop the condition, especially if they’re a Westie). How long do dogs live with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis? Dogs with pulmonary fibrosis have a very guarded prognosis. According to the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, dogs usually only live 12 to 18 months after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. Conclusion Westie Lung Disease, or Canine Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, is a serious condition that appears to affect West Highland White Terriers more than other dog breeds. This disease process of gradual lung fibrosis and scarring is irreversible. Affected dogs often require supportive care until a point when humane euthanasia should be considered. FBI’s ‘radar’ fails again: Is America safe under an unchecked government?

A strange and concerning incident took place at a recent Trump rally in Tucson, Arizona. About 20 attendees experienced mysterious symptoms, such as blurred vision and facial swelling, shortly after the event. While we don’t yet know what caused this, some speculate that it could have been a chemical attack. Given the political violence over the past few years, many are questioning whether this was another instance of Democrats and the media inciting violence against Trump supporters. This incident at the Tucson rally isn’t just a one-off. It’s part of a much bigger problem with the FBI. Arizona journalist Christy Kelly appeared on “Blaze News Tonight” last week to discuss the story. She interviewed 10 attendees who became ill after the rally. Every person reported that the event seemed perfectly fine, but about 20 to 30 minutes after leaving, they began experiencing alarming symptoms: stinging noses, blurred vision, and redness around their eyes. Many ended up in emergency rooms, and some were diagnosed with bilateral ocular chemical burns. That’s not some minor irritation. We’re talking chemical burns in their eyes! While doctors initially suggested the symptoms could be from extreme lighting or an airborne irritant, the diagnoses point to something more severe. Though both the event center and local law enforcement were notified, neither the venue nor Tucson police have issued a statement about the possible chemical exposure. Thankfully, the Trump campaign is investigating to find out what really happened. But the silence from officials is deafening, raising the question: Does anyone even care any more? This incident at the rally isn’t just a one-off. It’s part of a much bigger problem with the FBI. I’ve been talking about this on my show for years now. How many times have we heard from the FBI after a mass shooting or assassination attempt that “the suspect was on our radar”? That’s comforting, especially since all these people on your radar seem to go forward with their crimes. Just look at Ryan Wesley Routh, Trump’s second would-be assassin. He was in possession of an AK-47 despite multiple run-ins with the law, including a three-hour standoff with law enforcement with a fully automatic machine gun back in 2002. If he was on the FBI’s radar back in 2019, how on earth was he able to obtain an AK-47 and get on Trump's golf course? The FBI claims it receives thousands of tips each day, but here’s the trouble: Routh wasn’t just on the radar — he’d been involved in previous threats. Yet law enforcement did nothing. Why? Could it be incompetence, or is there something more sinister at play?I’m not here to spin conspiracy theories, but let’s talk about conspiracy facts. We live in an era in which the government knows everything about us. With the power of artificial intelligence and all the data it collects, the FBI could easily identify unstable individuals like Routh. With the power the bureau holds, who’s to say it couldn’t manipulate someone into thinking he has a “responsibility” to act violently? I’m not saying it’s happening — but with the level of trust Americans have in their government at an all-time low, this most recent failure surely isn’t helping the case. This kind of unchecked power is a problem no matter who’s in office. Democrats, let me ask you: Do you trust this system? Would you still trust it if Trump gets re-elected? Unless you’re counting on a one-party state, this same government could one day be used against you. That’s why it’s essential that we demand the rule of law be enforced equally — regardless of political affiliation. The danger isn’t just to one side. The danger is to all of us. The only way we protect ourselves from an out-of-control government is by ensuring that no one has this kind of power. Once it's in the hands of someone you don’t trust, it’s too late. And if we don’t demand accountability and equal justice now, it won’t be long before we find ourselves on the wrong side of that power. We may already be there. Want more from Glenn Beck? Dragon Age The Veilguard’s world “will never match expectations”

My first steps in Treviso, the Antivan port city, leave me in awe. Shimmering canals wind through Mediterranean-style streets. Merchants peddle everything from colorful fruit and vegetables to bulky gear for the modern adventurer. I've been waiting for years to see Antiva, and it doesn't disappoint. But, like every OG Dragon Age player, I had a vision of it in my mind, as I do with the likes of Rivain. While Treviso matched my high expectations, I ask Dragon Age: The Veilguard's art director Matt Rhodes and level design director Francois Chaput about the pressure of creating cityscapes that we've been dreaming of for decades.
