10 Best Songs About Friendship (Part II)

Our recent article on the best rock songs about friendship received a huge response from our readers, many of whom suggested songs that weren’t included on the first list. When only selecting ten songs, it’s inevitable that some great ones will be missed. However, we take our readers’ comments very seriously, especially those from people who know rock music well—fans just like us, who have been listening to this music our entire lives, some for as long as 50 to 60 years. In response to the feedback, we decided to create a part two, incorporating many of the songs The post 10 Best Songs About Friendship (Part II) appeared first on ClassicRockHistory.com.

Pet Cat Lost in Yellowstone Travels 800 Miles Toward the California City Where Owners Still Had Hope 60 Days Later

An incredible story reminiscent of Homeward Bound, recently came out from California—that a cat who had accompanied a family to Yellowstone National Park, was lost there. Despite the distance of over 800 miles, the cats’ owners got a call two months after the sorrowful trip that their animal had been found in California, not Wyoming. Benny and […] The post Pet Cat Lost in Yellowstone Travels 800 Miles Toward the California City Where Owners Still Had Hope 60 Days Later appeared first on Good News Network.

Office Cats: The Pros & Cons of Felines in the Workplace

The post Office Cats: The Pros & Cons of Felines in the Workplace by Christopher Bays appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com. Hi, I’m Christopher! Read my introduction to learn more about me and my silly Russian Blue cat, Olga. Some companies allow employees to bring their dogs to work, but very few allow cats. Most remote workers, including my colleagues, enjoy having their felines around their home offices. Even though they leap on our keyboards, interrupt our video conferences, and attack inanimate objects, we’re lucky to spend the day with them. Pros of Office Cats Except for allergy sufferers, most office workers would benefit from their presence. Since cats can be unpredictable, they’ll make the workday more entertaining. Watching a cat disturb or attack everyone’s least favorite coworker will evoke laughter and improve morale. It’s hard not to smile when you see a cat dive into the blinds or climb up a cubicle wall; you can’t have a bad day when cats run wild in the office. Sure, it might cause some to lose focus, but a few lost minutes are less detrimental to a business than a workforce of resentful, unhappy employees. Relax, Christopher. I’ll get back to work after my catnip break. Before they can enter an office, the cats must be vaccinated, groomed, sterilized, and free of parasites, but their temperament shouldn’t disqualify them. Having a couple of aggressive or hyperactive cats can only make the office environment more intriguing.  Keeping the litter boxes clean and deciding who cleans may seem like a problem, but it’s simple to resolve. The office manager or CEO can decide who cleans the litter boxes after they complete their employee evaluations. The worker with the lowest score can clean them every day and purchase more litter when needed. This will motivate them to work harder and eventually pass the litter scoop to another deserving caretaker. Lastly, having cats in the office can be therapeutic. Before a big presentation, your nerves are shot, but all you need to do is grab one of the friendly cats and pet them. Their purring will relax you and give you the confidence to carry on. I’ve calculated my paycheck. You owe me 45 pounds of wet food! Cons of Office Cats I could write a lengthy article about the disadvantages of allowing cats in the office, but I’m biased since Olga keeps me optimistic when I’m working. However, I’ll mention the less common reasons. Some cats enjoy attacking computer mice, and the vast number of mice in any modern office could lead to multiple injuries and worker’s comp claims. The dress code would also cause problems. Cat owners who insist on dressing their cats up for work would eventually become resentful of the best-dressed felines, which could lead to more conflicts and meetings with the HR director. Employees may also get irritated when video chatting with clients and repeatedly hearing, “What a pretty kitty you have. What kind of cat is that?” Sorry, I can’t write a review on this book. I don’t understand what’s going on, and the characters are out there, man. I wouldn’t be employed for long if I brought Olga to the office. She sleeps a lot in the morning, but her hunger pains make her impatient in the afternoon. Her Tasmanian Devil-like behavior would not be amusing to everyone. After knocking family pictures and coffee cups off the desks, sharpening her claws on employees’ legs, and defiling the break room, she would be exiled, and I would be terminated. Luckily, I work at home and can tolerate Olga’s mischief. This article is a part of Christopher and Olga's series. Something in the Water: Surveying Lake and River Monsters

Column SFF Bestiary Something in the Water: Surveying Lake and River Monsters Do you have a favorite lake or river monster? A local legend or bit of folklore? By Judith Tarr | Published on September 23, 2024 Photo by Immanuel Giel (Public Domain) Comment 0 Share New Share Photo by Immanuel Giel (Public Domain) Land-based cryptids live along the edges of the human world. They inhabit the liminal spaces, the places where humans seldom go. The forests of North America. The moors and fells of the British Isles. The high peaks and valleys of the Himalayas. The jungles of Southeast Asia. The wilds of Tasmania, and the Australian Outback. Mostly they exist in the imagination of the humans who live near them or go out hunting them. Once in a great while, they turn out to be real. There are cryptids in the water, too—maybe even more numerous than on land. I’ll get to sea monsters in a while; in this chapter of the Bestiary I’ll be looking at cryptids who inhabit lakes and rivers. They’re all over the world, on every continent but (as far as I can find) Antarctica. Different creatures live in different bodies of water, but they fall into a few distinct types. There are the ones that look like fish. Others—and those are numerous—are long and narrow and supple like serpents. And some are long-necked and thick-bodied, with flippers, like prehistoric plesiosaurs. What most of them have in common is size. No minnows in that lot. Generally they’re on the large side. Many are huge. Ten, twenty, thirty feet long or more. They’re genuine monsters, at least as far as length and girth are concerned. They are not often aggressive. If they swamp a boat, it’s as likely that the boat got in their way as that they deliberately attacked it. For the most part, they don’t want conflict with humans. That’s true of most cryptids, actually. The ones like the chupacabra and the Black Beast of Exmoor that attack and mutilate livestock seldom turn on humans. If they’re predators, their prey tends to be wild game or, if and when they’re available, domestic animals. Mostly they’re just there in the water. Some, like the queen of them all, the Loch Ness Monster—or Nessie as she’s known to her fans—are huge draws for the tourists. People come from all over to try to get a glimpse, to the great benefit of the local economy. The main question always is, is this cryptid real? Or is it something more mundane? Is it a log in the water, an odd curl of wave, a misidentified fish or aquatic animal? Has human imagination and fondness for story transformed the ordinary into the legendary? Let’s come down to the water and see what we can find. I’ll be looking at Nessie, of course—how not?—and Champ and the Bunyip and the Mokele-Mbembe, too. Do you have a favorite lake or river monster? A local legend or bit of folklore? A particular water cryptid that you’d like me to look into? Let me know in comments, and we’ll see what we can see.[end-mark] The post Something in the Water: Surveying Lake and River Monsters appeared first on Reactor.

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy Discusses Online Censorship Law and Calls for Regulators To Target Online Streamers

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. “Pernicious, unchecked censorship” is how many critics might describe many of the UK government’s actions and legislation, but UK Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy has chosen to speak about “pernicious, unchecked disinformation” and what is being done about it. That particular comment was meant to once again reinforce the authorities’ claim that online disinformation is where the story of the UK riots begins and ends. But, Nandy also praised the country’s contentious censorship law, the Online Safety Act, as a way that another government department is able to deal with “incitement and disinformation.” As for her own department, Nandy spoke about the Media Act that was pushed by the previous government as a way to tighten the regulation of broadcasters. The minister’s comments suggest that the intent of the current cabinet is to use the Office of Communications (Ofcom) regulator to tighten the grip on the streaming services as well. What Nandy considers to be high regulatory standards now affecting traditional broadcasters is what those opposed to such rules see as a vehicle to usher in more censorship. And now, it seems like it’s streaming platforms’ turn to be included in this policy. Ofcom, Nandy revealed as she delivered her keynote at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention, will start reviewing the video-on-demand market to bring it up to “the same high standards” as broadcasters. A wide range of other talking points was covered by this official: the need to have more diversity on film and TV, “fight” what she (and the government) consider to be polarizing fake news, and even have more content made “outside of London” and in working-class settings. It may sound like the Labor government’s activity around this industry is designed to put proverbial shackles around its feet, but Nandy sought to reassure her audience with a different metaphor: it’s “rocket boosters” that will be put “under (its) efforts,” she said. The Labor government that took over from the Conservatives earlier in the year is building up on their policies. Thus. A new body, the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (CIISA), the brainchild of the Conservatives, will be launched by the end of 2024. According to reports, its goal is to “help fight bullying and harassment in the creative industries.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net.
