The great congressional Republican meltdown (and what it means)

The great congressional Republican meltdown (and what it means)

The Republican House of Representatives was supposed to play hardball with the Democrats and the Senate. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) had promised to pass a six-month budget (a “clean CR”) along with the SAVE Act. But he failed dramatically, with 14 Republicans of all stripes voting against it. So what happened? Much of the answer depends on which no votes you’re talking about and who you ask, but in the end the blame falls squarely on the speaker and his team. First, consider the Pentagon lovers, or “defense hawks” — or whatever you want to call them. These guys love the military, eat up the scary secret briefings, and can’t find a billion-dollar credit card slip they won’t sign. The shiny brass over in Arlington said any sort of short-term funding deal would “jeopardize national security,” so these guys said they couldn’t support the CR. You’ll hear complaints about amateur staff in over their heads from everyone from the Freedom Caucus to retired leadership staff, and after enough failures, it’s hard to ignore. Seems like a tough hill to climb, right? Potentially yes, but here’s where the speaker and his team are supposed to come in. Active and expertly run offices would work with the Republican whip to get these guys back into the fold. The Pentagon Republicans are rarely as difficult as the ideologues, and between cajoling and a few sweet promises, you can get them on board. Johnson’s colleagues in leadership, however, don’t appear to have been a part of any plan. One anonymous member even complained to a morning newsletter that they had no idea what the plan was. It’s hard to really whip when you’re not in the room where the decisions are made. Then there are the 12-step dreamers. These are those conservative Republicans who (rightly) long for the days of a proper, 12-bill appropriations process and (wrongly) rage against the machine until those days return. I say “wrongly” because the last time Congress went through the proper appropriations process was 1996. To put that in perspective, in 1996 Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) wasn’t born yet. I also say “wrongly” because a six-month CR is the best shot in town at avoiding a bloated omnibus, which they — to a man — oppose even more aggressively. Ho-hum. Anyway, these guys outnumber the recalcitrant Pentagon boys and demand a process, and they’re not going to vote for just any darn CR! … At least not one without the promise of a big old war with the Democrats and Senate uniparty at the end of it. And this is where our speaker comes back in. Because that wasn’t coming, was it? D.C. had reason to suspect Johnson wasn’t going to fight to the mats, telling the Senate, “An omnibus has zero chance in my chamber, and it’s a CR or a shutdown.” He said nothing like this, and his aides reportedly whispered around Capitol Hill that it was all a bluff — and one with enough time to change course before the end-of-month deadline. That means those conservative Republicans maybe willing to bend their 12-bill rule for a fight weren’t ever going to get one. They were like those Highlanders in “Braveheart” who didn’t feel like standing against the English only for the nobles to negotiate a few new titles. So they left the field. And finally, there was the McCarthy Derangement Caucus, which is just a bunch of wild men (and women) throwing meat to the crowds and screaming, “Are you entertained?!” Johnson wasn’t going to get those guys on his side, and that’s just part of the math you start out with. But the rest is basically on him, and don’t just take my word for it. Folks from every side are glaring in his direction. You’ll hear complaints about amateur staff in over their heads from everyone from the Freedom Caucus to retired leadership staff, and after enough failures, it’s hard to ignore. Even standing strictly on the outside, without the benefit of D.C.’s omnipresent barroom gossip, you can see a speaker who publicly brought a bill to a vote on the floor and failed — even with the Republican nominee’s full-throated support. How do you square that with a speaker in control? So what’s next? First, a three-month continuing resolution, which ends in a funding fight in December, when everybody wants to go home and no one wants to shut down the government. Then, another bloated omnibus, courtesy of your friends in the Grand Old Party. Merry Christmas. Maybe something will change. But I doubt it. Former Border Patrol sector chief: Biden-Harris admin covered up rise in terrorism-linked migrants

Aaron Heitke, the recently retired chief Border Patrol agent for the San Diego sector, told members of the House Homeland Security Committee Wednesday that the Biden-Harris administration concealed information about illegal aliens with terrorism ties from the American public as part of its effort to "quiet the border-wide crisis." "The administration was trying to convince the public that there was no threat at the border," Heitke testified, noting that this was the farthest thing from the truth. In his opening statements, the former sector chief, who has served through five different administrations, remarked upon the flood of illegal aliens that occurred after President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took power and has been sustained in the years since. Heitke indicated that the Biden-Harris administration immediately decreased the amount of detention space available and ordered the sectors to "take in and process all the illegal aliens encountered on the border." Foreign nationals caught on quickly, realizing that this meant the Biden-Harris administration would set them loose in the American homeland. ""The fact that so many illegal aliens are being released into the United States spread worldwide very quickly," said Heitke, adding that Border Patrol was soon inundated with hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens keen to turn themselves in — many of whom were apparently flown to Texas. According to the former sector chief, the immediate consequence of this surge was that 60%-90% and sometimes all of the agents on duty were pulled away from the border, leaving it virtually unguarded, such that "Border Patrol zones across Texas, Arizona, and California had no agent presence for weeks and months at a time." As a result, those illegal aliens who didn't want to bother turning themselves in with millions of others could simply walk into the U.S., said Heitke, emphasizing, "We have no idea who and what entered our country over this time." This alone was enough to jeopardize American security — as Patty Morin, mother of Rachel Morin, revealed in her testimony to the committee. 'They are allowing them into our smallest towns, and our people are dying.' Rachel Morin was a Maryland mother of five who was brutally raped and murdered last year. Her suspected killer, who was arrested in June, is an El Salvadoran who illegally entered the U.S. in February 2023. Following Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez's arrest, Harford County Sheriff Jeffery Gahler revealed that the suspect had fled to the U.S. after murdering a young woman the previous month. Just weeks after jumping the border, he savagely attacked a 9-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion in Los Angeles. Patty Morin told the committee, "They say that the borders are safe. We live 1,800 miles away from the southern border. They're not safe. They're not safe. Do you have a sanctuary city in your state? You're not safe." "They are bringing criminals into our country. They are allowing them into our smallest towns, and our people are dying," added Morin. Heitke noted that at the same time that illegal aliens like Martinez-Hernandez were stealing into the country, "simultaneously, in San Diego we had an exponential increase in Significant Interest Aliens. These are aliens with significant ties to terrorism." During the Trump years, Heitke indicated that the San Diego sector averaged 10-15 SIAs per year. This number skyrocketed under the Democratic administration. "Once word was out that the border was far easier to cross, San Diego went to over 100 SIAs in 2022, way over 100 SIAs in 2023, and more than that this year. These are only the ones we caught," said Heitke. It's unclear how many of the millions of "gotaways" who have stolen into the country while Harris was border czar have ties to terrorists or are themselves terrorists. "At the time, I was told I could not release any information on this increase in SIAs or mention any of the arrests. The administration was trying to convince the public that there was no threat at the border." Rep. Anthony D'Esposito (R-N.Y.) asked the former sector chief what is known about the gotaways who have entered the U.S. When Heitke responded, "None," D'Esposito said, "Zero information of millions of people — some of which have been found to be on the terror watch list — we have zero information?" "Correct," answered Heitke. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

WATCH: The queen of gaslighting, Karine Jean-Pierre, scolds Peter Doocy for ‘dangerous’ question about White House's anti-Trump rhetoric

Ironically, the anti-hate speech party is the same one perpetuating the violence-inducing anti-Trump rhetoric by continuing to liken him to Hitler, spread the message that he’ll end democracy, rule as a dictator, and even imprison certain groups. Even though Trump has escaped two attempts to assassinate him now, the left continues to use the same language, leading many to fear that the political violence directed toward him will only continue. When Fox News’ Peter Doocy pointed this out in a press conference, House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s response can only be described as gaslighting at its finest. Dave Rubin plays the clip: - YouTube www.youtube.com “It's been only two days since somebody allegedly tried to kill Donald Trump again, and you're here at the podium in the White House briefing room calling him a threat. How many more assassination attempts on Donald Trump until the president and the vice president and you pick a different word to describe Trump other than threat?” Doocy asked. “I actually completely disagree with the premise of your question. The question that you’re asking, it is also incredibly dangerous in the way that you’re asking it because American people are watching,” Jean-Pierre began before launching into a jeremiad about how much the Biden-Harris administration has always condemned political violence. “And to say that from an administration who has consistently condemned political violence, from an administration where the president called the former president and was thankful, grateful that he was OK, from an administration who has called out January 6, called out the attack of Paul Pelosi, called out and said we need to lower the temperature after the Butler incident — and now for you to make that kind of, of comment in your question ... your question involved a comment and a statement and that is also incredibly dangerous when we have been very clear in condemning political violence from here,” she continued. After that grand display of gaslighting, she turned the conversation toward January 6 and used it as a justification for calling Trump a threat. “What I have said about the former president about January 6 is facts that you all have reported. It is fact. When you have a former president who basically says that the results of the election were not the results of the election when dozens of more than 60 Republican judges said that it was a free and fair election — more than 60 said it was indeed a free and fair election. You had more than 2,000 people who were told to go to the Capitol. It was one of the darkest days of our democracy,” she ranted, adding that there were “law enforcement officers who died because of what happened at the Capitol.” “They were there because the former president told them to go there. I mean, I don't know if that's not a threat in our democracy when it was one of the darkest days of our democracy — January 6, one of the darkest days — and so we have been very clear from here. ... It is welcome to have those disagreement on the economy, on health care, on foreign policy, but when you start bringing up political rhetoric, that is not OK,” she said. Despite her lengthy attempt to shut him down and steer the conversation in a different direction, Doocy wasn’t deterred. “But to your point, there are people watching at home who might miss the part where you say ‘let's lower the temperature,’ and there are mentally unstable people who are attempting to kill political candidates, attempting to kill Donald Trump, and they are still hearing this White House refer to him as a threat. Is there no concern that people are taking that literally?” he pressed. “We’re using examples. We’re not just saying that to say it. January 6, Peter. January 6. Wait, January 6. How many times do you have to — January 6, 2021,” she fired back. Dave can’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of her “belabored” language. “She’s accusing Peter Doocy of being dangerous” when he was “just asking if the Biden administration could lower the temperature, and that somehow is dangerous,” he laughs.
