NASA Watches a Peanut-Shaped Asteroid Drift Past Earth

Peanuts! Get your peanuts here! The Solar System has been passing out peanuts lately in the form of two different oddly shaped asteroids that recently passed by Earth, and both look like over-sized peanuts. The latest peanut-shaped asteroid pass was on September 16, 2024, when the near-Earth asteroid 2024 ON came within 1 million kilometers (62,000 miles) of Earth (2.6 times the Earth-Moon distance). Radar imaging revealed the asteroid was peanut-shaped because it is actually a contact binary – which means it is made of two smaller objects touching each other. NASA says the two rounded lobes are separated by a pronounced neck, and one lobe about 50% larger than the other. In total, 2024 ON measures about 350 meters (382 yards) long. The radar could resolve features down to about 3.75 meters across on the surface, including brighter boulders. NASA says about 14% of asteroids in this size range (larger than about 200 meters (660 feet)) are contact binaries. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… peanut? ?This nutty asteroid is about as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall. It was imaged by our Goldstone radar as it safely passed Earth at a distance of 2.8M miles (4.6M km). https://t.co/66hy0ehsPe(P.S. it's #NationalPeanutDay!) pic.twitter.com/WlxoIFx2IM— NASA JPL (@NASAJPL) September 13, 2024 Just last month, on August 18-19, 2024, the other “peanut” passed by our planet. Asteroid 2024 JV33 appears to also be a contact binary with two rounded lobes, one lobe larger than the other, and is about 300 meters (980 feet) long, about as long as the Eiffel Tower. Imagery showed that asteroid 2024 JV33 rotates once every seven hours. It safely passed Earth a little further than 2024 ON, at a distance of 4.6 million km (2.8 million miles), about 12 times the distance between the Moon and Earth. Both asteroids were captured in a series of radar images obtained by the Deep Space Network’s Goldstone Solar System Radar near Barstow, California. The principal technique for studying asteroids is radar – called planetary radar. While astronomers can study the Universe by capturing light from stars, planets, and galaxies, they can also study nearby objects by shining radio light on them and analyzing the signals that echo back. Planetary radar can reveal incredibly detailed information about our planetary neighbors. “When astronomers are studying light that is being made by a star, or galaxy, they’re trying to figure out its properties,” said Patrick Taylor, radar division head for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, in an interview I did with him earlier this year. “But with radar, we already know what the properties of the signals are, and we leverage that to figure out the properties of whatever we bounced the signals off of. That allows us to characterize planetary bodies – like their shape, speed, and trajectory. That’s especially important for hazardous objects that might stray too close to Earth.” An animation of the radar images showing the rotation of asteroid 2024 ON. Credit: NASA/JPL. 2024 ON was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on Mauna Loa in Hawaii on July 27. The asteroid was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson, Arizona, on May 4. NASA labels objects larger than 492 feet that come within 4.6 million miles of Earth “potentially hazardous objects,” so scientists are monitoring 2024 JV33 for potential danger even though they don’t expect the asteroid to pose a threat in the future. Brian Johnson joined Slash on stage to perform “Killing Floor”

The legendary AC/DC vocalist Brian Johnson joined the Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash on stage during the United Kingdom Sky Arts Awards to perform the Howlin' Wolf track "Filling Floor". The cover was part of the recent Slash Blues covers album "Orgy of The Damned" and Brian Johnson was the vocalist on that track. Curiously, in the studio, the Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler played the harmonica. Watch Brian Johnson and Slash performing "Killing Floor" https://youtu.be/VBhVILxsERY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQnxY6seRHc Written and recorded by Howlin' Wolf in 1964, "Killing Floor" became one of the biggest Blues classics of all time. It was covered by countless artists over the decades and is called "one of the defining classics of Chicago electric Blues". Curiously, Led Zeppelin adapted the song, transforming into "The Lemon Song", later naming Howlin' Wolf as a co-author. Besides Wolf, also recorded the track Sumlin (Electric guitar), Lafayette Leake (Piano), Buddy Guy (Acoustic Guitar), Andrew "Blueblood" McMahon (Bass), Sam Lay (Drums), Arnold Rogers (Tenor sax) and Donald Hankins (Baritone sax). Besides Brian Johnson, Slash’s new record also has names like Chris Robinson, Billy Gibbons, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers and Demi Lovato. Orgy Of The Damned setlist “The Pusher” (featuring Chris Robinson) “Crossroads” (featuring Gary Clark Jr.) “Hoochie Coochie Man” (featuring Billy Gibbons) “Oh Well” (featuring Chris Stapleton) “Key to the Highway” (featuring Dorothy) “Awful Dream” (featuring Iggy Pop) “Born Under a Bad Sign” (featuring Paul Rodgers) “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” (featuring Demi Lovato) “Killing Floor” (featuring Brian Johnson) “Living for the City” (featuring Tash Neal) “Stormy Monday” (featuring Beth Hart) “Metal Chestnut” (Original Slash song) It is Slash's second solo album, the first one since his self-titled debut, released in 2010. Besides his work with Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver, he had already released two albums as Slash's Snakepit and four with Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. REO Speedwagon will stop touring due to irreconcilable differences

Formed back in 1967 in Champaign, Illinois, REO Speedwagon has been active for almost 60 years but now the group announced that they will stop touring next January 2025 due to irreconcilable differences between the classic members Kevin Cronin (Vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Bruce Hall (Bass). So the shows scheduled across the United States next September, October, November and December will be the final ones of their career. Their final line-up has: Neal Doughty (Keyboards, piano - Not touring since 2023), Kevin Cronin (Vocals, guitar, keyboards), Bruce Hall (Bass), Dave Amato (Guitar), Bryan Hitt (Drums), Derek Hilland (Keyboards, piano), Matt Bissonnette (Bass). Read the REO Speedwagon statement about stop touring "To our fans: Bruce has intended to be Back On the Road Again by now. If it were up to just him, he’d be back on tour… but it’s not up to just him. The consensus opinion was that he had not recovered sufficiently to be able to perform at the level the fans have come to expect. Bruce respected that opinion and is grateful that Matt has been around to keep the Wagon rolling through the summer tour. Bruce never had any intention of retiring or walking away from the band, fans, and crew he has loved for almost 50 years." "For Kevin’s part, he too has never had any intention of leaving the band, and the fans and crew mean the world to him, as well. Due to this complex situation, irreconcilable differences arose between Bruce and Kevin. So, it is with great sadness that we announce REO Speedwagon will cease touring effective January 1, 2025. Neal, Kevin, and Bruce thank their fans for all their years of loyal support and for giving back to the band such wonderful memories that will remain with each of them forever," REO Speedwagon said. Jane’s Addiction releases new single “True Love”

Just a few days the vocalist Perry Farrell assaulted Dave Navarro on stage during a Jane's Addiction show in Boston and the band announced a hiatus and tour cancellation, they released a new single, curiously called "True Love". Is the second one with the classic line-up which also has Eric Avery (Bass) and Stephen Perkins (Drums), since they already had released "Imminent Redemption" in July. The track was written by Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and Josh Klinghoffer. Hear the new Jane's Addiction song "True Love" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nJ-pYlt6Qc&pp=ygUaamFuZSdzIGFkZGljdGlvbiB0cnVlIGxvdmU%3D The band recently released a statement talking about their hiatus: “To all the fans, the band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group. As such, they will be canceling the remainder of the tour. Refunds for the canceled dates will be issued at your point of purchase – or if you purchased from a third-party resale site like StubHub, SeatGeek, etc, please reach out to them directly. Thank you,” the band said. What Perry Farrell said on his social media “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation,” Perry Farrell said. What Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins said: Dave Navarro offered a more complete statement on his personal social media, in a statement also signed also by Eric Avery (Bass) and Stephen Perkins (Drums). “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour.” “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken. Dave, Eric and Stephen,” they said. The post Jane’s Addiction releases new single “True Love” appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

The 2 young Blues guitarists Billy Gibbons loves

The ZZ Top vocalist and guitarist Billy Gibbons is certainly one of the most influential Blues Rock guitarists from the past five decades. He was a crucial part of the band's sound, which made them sell an estimated amout of more than 50 million records worldwide. Gibbons continues to be a huge inspiration for countless guitarists but although he is already in his 70s and saw many amazing artists over the decades, he continues to pay attention to new players. He even revealed which are two new Blues guitarists that he loves. The 2 young Blues guitarists Billy Gibbons loves Kingfish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-nTAgOMK7w&pp=ygUIa2luZ2Zpc2g%3D The first artists mentioned by Billy Gibbons in the interview with Guitar World in 2024, was the American artists Kingfish. “Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram is on it. In that there’s a resonance with a strident Mississippi presence, bringing on that wisdom of the Delta," Billy Gibbons said. Back in 2023, Kingfish was one of the artists who were invited to give Gibbons the BMI Troubadour Award. It honors songwriters who had indelible impacts on the music work and are still a source of inspiration for younger generations. Kingfish covered that night ZZ Top's song "Waitin' For the Bus". Christone "Kingfish" Ingram was born back in 1999 in Clarksdale, Mississippi and started his musical career in 2014. So he became a professional artist two years after ZZ Top released their most recent album "La Futura" (2012). Since then, the musician released three praised albums. They are: "Kingfish" (2019), "662" (2021) and "Live in London" (2023). But he also recorded with other artists like Buddy Guy, Eric Gales and Keb Mo. Quinn Sullivan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Xc9pYvxn64&pp=ygUfcXVpbm4gc3VsbGl2YW4gbWlkbmlnaHQgaGlnaHdheQ%3D%3D The second guitarist praised by Gibbons during his conversation with Guitar World was Quinn Sullivan. He said: "Quinn Sullivan has entered the scene, a Buddy Guy discovery going on to play at the Mahindra Blues Festival in India. Both (Quinn and Kingfish) join the wave of up-and-comers with a genuine kind of approach and intensity.” Coincidentally, just like Kingfish, Quinn Sullivan was born in 1999. He is from the city of New Bedford, Massachusetts but started his musical career back in 2006, when he was only a kid. He became known for appearing in TV shows like The Ellen DeGeneres at the age of six. Sullivan also had the opportunity to perform with names like Buddy Guy and B.B. King around that time. His first album "Cyclone" was released when he was only 12. Curiously, Billy Gibbons listed in an interview with The Quietus, the Sullivan album "Midnight Highway" as one of his favorites of all time. The record was released in 2017 when the American guitarist was only 18. Explaining his choice, he said he was a little sceptical at first when people said this young guitar player was amazing. But just like everyone, he was amazed when he had the opportunity to hear Sullivan playing. "Quinn Sullivan seems to have what it takes. The ‘blues’ seems to be rediscovered about every ten years but in this case I think it’s well done. It’s certainly encouraging. Interpreting the blues in an appealing manner is not so different than attempting to speak a recently-learned foreign language. You can memorise the instruction book but it’s the dialect that allows you to enter the society as a true speaker of the language", Billy Gibbons said. Until 2024, Quinn Sullivan released five studio albums, the most recent one being "Salvation" (2024).The post The 2 young Blues guitarists Billy Gibbons loves appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
