Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro has a bigger screen, a new chip, and better battery life

Image: Apple Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro lineup at Monday’s product event, with bigger screens, a new A18 Pro chip, a bunch of new recording features, and improved battery life. The company’s new flagship smartphones have slightly bigger screens across both models: 6.3 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max (up from 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively, on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max). Apple also says the phones have “the thinnest borders on any Apple product.” The bodies of the phones are once again made from titanium. They come in four colors: black, white, natural, and a new “desert titanium.” The iPhone 16 Pro lineup comes with the A18 Pro chip, with a 16-core Neural Engine that it says will offer... The AirPods Pro 2 will soon double as hearing aids

The AirPods Pro 2 are also getting a five-minute hearing test feature. | Screenshot: Apple Apple has announced a batch of hearing health updates coming to the AirPods Pro 2, including a new “clinical grade” hearing aid feature for users with mild to moderate hearing loss. The iPhone maker says the hearing aid functionality is still awaiting FDA clearance, but it expects the agency’s approval alongside other regulatory bodies “soon.” When enabled, the over-the-counter hearing aid capability will boost specific sounds in real time, such as speech and other environmental noises. A new clinically validated hearing test feature will also be included in this update that can help to detect hearing loss. Apple says the test requires both the AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iOS 18 iPhone or iPad and can be taken in under five minutes. ... Continue reading…

Apple’s Visual Intelligence is a built-in take on Google Lens

Finding out what kind of dog this is with Visual Intelligence. | Screenshot: Apple Apple has announced a new feature called Visual Intelligence that will be part of iOS 18’s Apple Intelligence suite of AI features “later this year.” The feature works much like similar features offered by other multimodal AI systems from Google or OpenAI. Visual Intelligence lets you “instantly learn about everything you see,” Apple’s Craig Federighi said during the company’s September event today. Federighi said the feature is “enabled by Camera Control,” which is the company’s name for a new capacitive camera button that’s now on the side of the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro phones. To trigger it, users will need to click and hold the button, then point the phone’s camera at whatever they’re curious about. iPhones use a “combination of... Continue reading…

The only thing better than Astro Bot is more Astro Bot... for free

Image: Team Asobi Astro Bot cannot stop winning — whether it be the hearts of fans and critics or racking up some of the highest review scores of a game this year. Now the game will continue its well-earned victory lap with the news that it’s getting DLC...for free...this year. Astro Bot director and Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet confirmed the news in an interview with Australian outlet Quest Daily. The DLC update will add new maps geared toward speedrunning challenges, leaderboards, and of course, new PlayStation-themed bots to rescue. However, don’t expect something the size of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree — Doucet says the DLC “isn’t going to be that huge.” The DLC’s additional challenge levels should definitely appeal to players who... iPhone 16 Pro debuts with bigger displays, A18 Pro, and major camera upgrades

The wait is finally over, and Apple just unveiled the iPhone 16 Pro during its Glowtime event. Apple's high-end smartphone comes with new 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display options. Compared to last year's iPhone 15 Pro, the new iPhone also has thinner bezels, making the experience more immersive. Apple also maintained the ProMotion and Always-On display technologies. iPhone 16 Pro comes in the following colors: Darker Black Titanium White Titanium Natural Titanium Desert Titanium The new A18 Pro chip uses the second-generation 3nm manufacturing process. It has a 16-core neural engine and a 17% increase in memory bandwidth. With that, Apple Intelligence features run 15% faster on the iPhone 16 Pro than on the iPhone 15 Pro, thanks to the next-generation ML accelerators. It also features 2x faster ray tracing than the A17 Pro. The A18 Pro also unlocks new advanced media features, including ProRes video recording and faster USB 3 speeds. Here's the new Camera Control and other camera features Image source: Apple Inc. The new 48MP Fusion camera has a second-generation quad-pixel sensor with zero shutter lag in ProRaw and HEIF photos. The new 48MP ultra-wide camera also improves the focal length and adds autofocus. The new A18 Pro chip improves video recording in noise environments, and the iPhone 16 Pro also adds a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom for the smaller models. Apple also adds 4K120fps for the iPhone 16 Pro. The playback speed can be adjusted after capture. The company also offers Slow-Motion Cinematic Recording. This new iPhone adds four studio-quality mics for "true-to-life" audio. During video recording, users can now capture Spatial Audio. New audio features while editing the video include "In-frame," "studio," and "cinematic." Later this year, the Voice Memos app will add a second layer that allows users to record two-track audio. iOS 18 RC and other finalized updates released ahead of Apple’s official launch

After the iPhone 16 keynote, Apple seeded the RC versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, macOS Sequoia, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2. With that, the company is preparing to release the public versions of these software updates as soon as next week. With iOS 18 RC and iPadOS 18 RC, Apple is tweaking the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. Now, apps can be organized in any way, which means they can be placed anywhere. App icons and widgets can take on a new look with a dark or tinted effect, and users can make apps appear larger to create the perfect experience for them. In the Lock Screen, it’s possible to choose new widgets instead of the Flashlight and Camera options. For watchOS 11 RC, Apple finally lets users customize their Activity Rings. Thanks to this change, the Activity Rings understand planned rest days, injuries, or days off without affecting the award streak. It’s also possible to customize Activity Ring goals by the day of the week, so your leg workout might differ from the one you go for an outdoor run. Additionally, the Fitness app allows users to customize the Summary tab to show exactly the metrics they want to see, including their friends’. macOS Sequoia RC brings the long-awaited iPhone Mirroring feature. This Continuity function allows users to fully access and engage with their iPhone right from their Mac. Apple says that a user’s custom wallpaper and icons appear just like on their iPhone, and they can swipe between pages on their Home Screen or launch and browse any of their favorite apps. The keyboard, trackpad, and mouse on Mac also let users interact with their iPhone, and audio even comes through. tvOS 18 RC, on the other hand, adds an Amazon Prime Video-like feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ movies and shows onscreen in real-time. visionOS 2 RC brings Spatial Photos, a new Home View, guest users, and more. It's important to note that iOS 18 RC, iPadOS 18 RC, and macOS Sequoia RC don't include the long-anticipated Apple Intelligence platform. However, a software update will make these features available next month. Keep checking BGR for the latest details about the iOS 18 RC and more.
