House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) said over the weekend that his committee was delayed in releasing its long-awaited report about the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan because the administration obstructed the investigation. The damning 353-page report lays bare the administration’s failures as well as the ways that it “misled and, in some instances, directly lied to the American people at every stage of the withdrawal, from before the go-to-zero order until today.” McCaul was asked by CBS News’ Margaret Brennan on “Face The Nation” on Sunday if the timing of the report’s release was related to the upcoming election. “No,” McCaul responded. “It’s taken me two years to get to this point because of the obstruction. I’ve had to sort of subpoena after subpoena, move to compel, threaten to, you know, hold the secretary in contempt to get information, like after action reports, all these documents, testimonies that we finally got to.” “Why is it important right now, Margaret? Because of the foreign policy is at stake,” he said. “What happened after Afghanistan impacted the world. Why? Because Putin responded by invading Ukraine two months after Afghanistan fell. A proposed ballot initiative that would strip pro-life protections in Missouri may be removed from the ballot after a judge ruled that its language violated state law.  The state Supreme Court will hear arguments on Tuesday on whether a ballot initiative that would make abortion a constitutional right will appear on the ballot in November. The initiative would ban the state government from passing laws that would “infringe upon a person’s fundamental right to reproductive freedom.” If passed, the amendment would undermine current Missouri law which protects unborn children at all stages in the red state. On Friday, Missouri Circuit Court Judge Christopher Kirby Limbaugh ruled that ballot organizers, Missourians for Constitutional Freedom and Anna Fitz-James, violated state law by not including language in the initiative that would make clear what current Missouri law would be repealed by adopting the amendment.  “Fitz-James’ failure to include any statute or provision that will be repealed, especially when many of these statutes are apparent,” Limbaugh wrote, adding the language “is in blatant violation of the sufficiency requirements” for ballot initiatives.  A challenge to the ballot language was filed by lawyers with the Thomas More Society on behalf of Missouri State Senator Mary Elizabeth Coleman, pro-life advocate Kathy Forck, State Rep. They argued the amendment would compromise other Missouri laws on issues like transgender surgeries and human cloning.   “Thomas More Society’s mission is to defend life, family, and freedom—wherever they are threatened. Missouri’s Amendment 3 threatens all three,” said Thomas More Society lawyer Catherine Martin. “We will not allow Missourians to be deceived into signing away dozens of current laws that protect the unborn, pregnant women, parents, and children.” Leftist activists have mobilized to place pro-abortion amendments on ballots across the country in red states such as Florida and Montana. A pro-abortion ballot in Arkansas was rejected last month by the state’s Supreme Court which agreed with Secretary of State John Thurston who said that the pro-abortion activist didn’t follow state law.  The Arkansas ballot initiative would have added exceptions to existing Arkansas abortion law for rape, incest, and fetal anomaly, as well as instituting a right to an abortion up to 18 weeks after conception. At 18 weeks, an unborn baby’s digestive system begins working and they can hear sounds.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy on Monday citing inflation and high interest rates as main reasons for the discount retail store’s financial troubles. The home goods chain, which boasts bargain prices for furniture and decor also pointed to fewer people spending money on these things in the wake of the pandemic. “The company has been adversely affected by recent macroeconomic factors such as high inflation and interest rates that are beyond its control,” Big Lots said in a press release. “The prevailing economic trends have been particularly challenging to Big Lots, as its core customers curbed their discretionary spending on the home and seasonal product categories that represent a significant portion of the company’s revenue,” the company said. As part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, Big Lots agreed to sell its business to a private equity firm, Nexus Capital Management for about $760 million, according to court records. Big Lots runs more than 1,300 stores across 48 states and made around $4.7 billion in revenue over the year that ended in September 2023. Nearly 300 stores will now close, the company said, but the remaining stores will continue to offer “extreme bargains.” Previously, Big Lots had told the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) it planned to close only 35 to 40 stores. CEO Bruce Thorn said the bankruptcy filing will enable Big Lots to move forward with more financial stability, and they “remain committed to offering extreme bargains, enabling easy shopping in our stores and online, and providing an outstanding customer experience.” Nexus’ managing director said the firm is confident Big Lots’ “greatest days are ahead” and they are “excited to have the opportunity to partner with Big Lots and help return this iconic brand to its status as America’s leading extreme value retailer.” Big Lots will be sold during a court-supervised auction. Technically, Big Lots could sell to a different buyer if someone makes a higher bid than Nexus’ offer, but such a situation is unlikely. About three months ago, Big Lots noted “substantial doubt about the Company’s ability to continue” in an SEC filing. Brick-and-mortar retail stores have seen declining foot traffic for years now, but the pandemic dealt a particularly strong blow. Sky-high inflation in the years following COVID caused people to slow their discretionary spending dramatically as well. Big Lots has also struggled to compete with similarly inexpensive retail chains that sell the same products, often for even lower prices, like Walmart. Big Lots is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

The NFL announced on Sunday that rap artist Kendrick Lamar will be the headliner at the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX. This will be Lamar’s second time on the Super Bowl stage as he appeared along with an ensemble of artists including Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and 50 Cent in 2022, per Variety. Super Bowl LIX is scheduled for February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Lamar issued a statement on the news, saying, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.” The 37-year-old Compton-born recording artist was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018, making him the first recipient who wasn’t from a jazz or classical music category. He’s also won 17 Grammy Awards along with multiple other accolades over the course of his career. Lamar is an outspoken supporter of Black Lives Matter and other leftist social causes. He made headlines in June 2022 after donning a fake crown of thorns during a performance and dousing himself in fake blood to protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs decision, as The Daily Wire previously reported.  “I wear this crown. They judge Christ. They judge you, they judge Christ,” Lamar told the cheering crowd at the time before beginning the song “Savior” as buckets of fake blood rained down on him. A new study from the Media Research Center revealed that ABC News — set to hold what could be the only presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday — is by far the most biased of the three major networks. The MRC analyzed coverage of the two major party candidates during the evening newscasts on network television — “World News Tonight” on ABC, “CBS Evening News” on CBS, and “NBC Nightly News” on NBC — and determined that ABC delivered the most dramatically slanted coverage. According to the study, “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir — who also happens to have been named one of Tuesday evening’s debate moderators — had covered Harris with an incredible 100% positive spin score. The way the spin score is calculated is simple: all assessments of polls or analyses of where the candidates stand are omitted, as are comments made by campaign sources. Of what’s left — comments made by anchors and reporters, voters, or other supposedly non-partisan sources — the MRC determines a ratio of positive-to-negative statements about each candidate. And since she entered the race on July 21, on “World News Tonight,” Harris had received 25 positive statements and zero negative. Buy here for a theater near you. “While our spin score similarly excludes all Democratic soundbites about the Republican nominee, ABC’s reporters and anchors either jumped in to criticize Trump themselves, or broadcast negative comments from non-partisan sources to impart a heavily negative spin to the former President’s coverage,” Rich Noyes wrote of the results. The MRC study found that Harris also had coverage slanting in her favor on CBS (94%) and NBC (71%), but ABC’s 100% was far and away the standout. Trump’s negative coverage on the other two networks was fairly dramatic as well (77% on CBS and 86% on NBC) but did not reach the level of hostility seen at ABC. Trump seems to have ABC’s number, however, and recently acknowledged the network’s leftward tilt during a press conference: “I’m going into very hostile territory shortly on a debate with ABC, George Slopodopoulos [sic] and that group. And ABC, I think, is the worst of everybody. I think they’re the worst, they’re the nastiest. They’re as bad as you can be. They’re worse than NBC, which is saying a lot.” He went on to say that he had only accepted the debate on ABC because it was the only one he could get Harris to agree to do.
