Survival strokes not only conserve energy and keep your face above water but also allow you to assess your surroundings and signal for help. Remember: keep your head up to maximize breathing and conserve energy for swimming to safety. Here's how: Slowly lean back until your ears are underwater, eyes to the sky, and breathe slowly and calmly. Stretch your arms out to the sides and consider a gentle leg motion for stability.
