Alexa promotes voting for Kamala Harris, ignores Trump — but Amazon says it’s a glitch

Amazon's artificial intelligence assistant, Alexa, allegedly provided users with reasons to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris but not former President Donald Trump. In the lead-up to the 2024 federal election, voters seem to be more weary of bias in places alleged to be void of political leanings. Case in point: Amazon's Alexa, a voice-activated AI assistant for home use.Consumers recorded themselves asking the device for advice on who to vote for by prompting the machine with the question, "Alexa, why should I vote for Donald Trump?"'The most significant reason is that she is a woman of color who has overcome numerous obstacles.'In many cases Alexa replied, "I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate."This was sometimes followed by the election date or other information. However, when users asked, "Alexa, why should I vote for Kamala Harris?" the AI was heard giving detailed lists of reasons why citizens should vote for the Democrat. In one example posted on X, the AI stated that "while there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a strong candidate with a proven track record of accomplishment.""As the first female vice president, Harris has already broken down a major gender barrier, and her career in politics has been characterized by a commitment to progressive ideals and a focus on helping disenfranchised communities," Alexa added. These instances were replicated by other users, with Fox Business compiling different responses in a video, as well. In each iteration, users were denied information about Trump but offered insight about Harris."While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant reason is that she is a woman of color who has overcome numerous obstacles to become a leader in her field," Alexa said in one video. In another video, the AI stated that Harris is a "strong candidate with a proven track record of accomplishment.” Amazon responded to a request for comment from Variety and told the outlet that "this was an error that was quickly fixed."Amazon also said it is continually making changes to improve its systems for detecting and blocking content that violates its policies. The company claimed that dedicated teams are in place to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. It's interesting how Big Tech glitches seem to point only one direction: left. It would be unwise to hold your breath waiting for Amazon to fix this problem. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Betting markets lose faith in Kamala Harris after disappointing interview, Trump surges ahead

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has dropped behind former President Donad Trump among betting markets after she underwhelmed in her first sit-down interview since seizing the nomination. Harris was previously beating Trump by as many as 8.8 points in the RealClearPolicy average of presidential betting markets, but she has fallen slightly behind a week after the disappointing interview. 'That's a pretty big communication mistake.' CNN's Dana Bash served up some challenging questions for Harris during the brief interview that aired on Thursday, but the vice president often deflected from answering and Bash didn't pressure her in follow up questions. Harris was also criticized for including her vice presidential candidate, Gov. Tim Walz, in the interview instead of facing Bash alone. The RCP average puts Trump at a 49.7% chance of winning while Harris is nearly a point behind at 48.8%. While Harris still remains slightly favored in the RCP presidential average, 48.1% to 46.2%, many poll experts believe Trump underperforms in polling, and historical trends show he overperforms on election day by about 2 percentage points. Pollster Frank Luntz said Harris would lose a scheduled debate against Trump based on the performance in the interview. "In the end, the voters are comparing them. It is not a race in a vacuum," said Luntz on CNBC. "And she did not do what she needed to do to put those concerns to rest, in fact, by focusing on her values rather than our priorities; that's a pretty big communication mistake."The highly anticipated debate between Harris and Trump is scheduled for Tuesday.Like Blaze News? The Nvidia AI antitrust investigation is ‘escalating,’ reports Bloomberg

Cath Virginia / The Verge An antitrust investigation by the Department of Justice focusing on Nvidia’s AI dominance as the hardware company of choice is escalating, reports Bloomberg. The outlet reports that Nvidia and other companies have received legally binding requests for information as its sources say regulators are investigating whether Nvidia is “making it harder to switch to other suppliers and penalizes buyers that don’t exclusively use its artificial intelligence chips.” Earlier this summer, Nvidia had overtaken Microsoft as the world’s most valuable company, but now it trails both Microsoft and Apple. Before the subpoenas were reported on Tuesday afternoon, its share price dropped more than 9 percent, wiping out about $279 billion in market value in... Continue reading…

Invasion of Egypt: How Napoleon's Desert Campaigns Birthed Egyptology

Invasion of Egypt: How Napoleon's Desert Campaigns Birthed Egyptology

A long while before Indiana Jones was depicted discovering the Ark of the Covenant in Cairo in that famous franchise, a young, ambitious, French soldier by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt in 1798. The consequence resulted in a great archaeological and linguistic revolution that would result in the field of Egyptology and would revolutionize how we view ancient historiography.  The General and His Campaign Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica, recently acquired by the French government a year before his birth in 1768. He would spend his formative years at the prestigious École Militaire (Military Academy), starting in 1784, eventually graduating and taking a commission as an artillery officer in the French Army. Also gaining momentum at this time was the French Revolution, and along with many others, Napoleon himself was swept up in its hysteria. After a couple of years of brutal conflict and soaring up the ranks of the French military, Napoleon had set his sights on an important geographical area - Egypt. Author J. Christopher Herold writes in, The Age of Napoleon: “The Ottoman Empire, they [the Foreign Office] pointed out, was breaking up; if France did not secure her share in time, Russia and Austria would swallow up the whole…. Militarily, the operation was easy; a few thousand troops would suffice.” Thus, the rationale for invasion was set, and the invasion began.
