Dutch regulator slaps Clearview AI with $33 million fine and threatens executive liability

Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Clearview AI has been hit with its largest fine yet under Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by a Dutch regulator. The Dutch Data Protection Authority, or Dutch DPA, announced a fine of 30.5 million euros, or about $33.7 million. The American facial recognition company, which built a database of images scraped from social media platforms, has been the target of regulators around the world for alleged privacy violations. It’s previously faced fines from the UK, Australia, France, and Italy and been forced to delete data on those countries’ residents. The Dutch DPA accused Clearview of creating an illegal database with “unique biometric codes” linked to the photos it collected. It also allegedly failed to give people whose... Continue reading…

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the foldable we’ve been waiting for

The first Pixel Fold (left) and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (right). The highest compliment I can pay the Pixel 9 Pro F — oh forget it, let’s just call it the Pixel Fold — is that I forgot I was using a folding phone while I was using it. Sounds like a weird compliment, right? Isn’t the whole point of the thing that it opens up so you can use the big inner screen? Well, kind of. The whole promise of the foldable phone is that it’s basically a small tablet when you need more screen real estate and a regular phone when you fold it back up. Every foldable I’ve used delivered on the first part of that promise. Big screen? We did it, Joe. It’s the small-screen experience that hasn’t been great. I was using the phone’s outer screen before bed, drowsily answering the minimum amount of Duolingo questions... Continue reading…

Android 15 is out — but it’s not ready for your phone yet

The Google Pixel 9. | Photo: Allison Johnson / The Verge Android 15 has officially arrived — for developers, at least. Google’s next-gen operating system is available in the Android Open Source Project, with support for Pixel phones due to roll out in the coming weeks. You’ll have to wait a little longer if you have a compatible device from Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Nothing, or other brands, while Google describes the window for Android 15 coming to those phones as within the “coming months.” While Apple typically rolls out major changes tied directly to each new version of iOS, Google’s Android updates often focus on tweaking the underlying ways apps and devices interact with each other. Down the line, devices with Android 15 will support single-tap passkeys, theft detection, improved m... Continue reading…

Tesla rolls out ‘Actually Smart Summon’ – see it in action

In a software update rolling out this week, Tesla has finally launched its next-gen Actually Smart Summon feature -- ASS for short. Tesla CEO Elon Musk once guaranteed the feature would be available by September 2022, but the month came and went without an update. Two years later, the feature is finally going live in software version 2024.27.20. "Buckle up for the ride of your life, except, surprise! You’re not in the car," said the release notes for the software version that started rolling out last night. "ASS (Actually Smart Summon) allows your vehicle to come to you, or head to a spot that you choose, all on its own. It’s like magic, but with more tech and less wand-waving." In order to use the feature, open the Tesla app on your phone and go to the new Summon tab to get a live feed from your car's cameras. You'll see two options in this tab: COME TO ME and GO TO TARGET. If you press and hold COME TO ME, the vehicle will automatically begin driving to your location. With GO TO TARGET, you can set a destination for your Tesla ahead of time, then press and hold the button to send your Tesla to the target you chose. If you want to stop summoning your Tesla at any point, just let go of the button. Here's a short video of Actually Smart Summon in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmZ7oHzRfvk Beyond Actually Smart Summon, Tesla is also debuting a feature called Dumb Summon. When you use Dumb Summon, simple controls will show up in the Tesla app that you can use to move your car backward or forward, like a video game controller. Tesla also notes that ASS and Dumb Summon should only be used in parking lots and driveways. If you decide to test out either of these features, keep an eye on your car and make sure that there aren't any people, bikes, or cars around when you use them. visionOS 2 beta 9 now available to Apple Vision Pro users

As we wait for Apple Vision Pro to potentially get Apple Intelligence, Apple seeds visionOS 2 beta 9 to Vision Pro users. Interestingly, Apple is expected to seed the Release Candidate version of the upcoming software updates next week, so the company is likely fixing bugs with this testing version. With visionOS 2, Apple doesn't bring many new features, but the company addresses several lacking functions users were waiting for with the original Apple Vision Pro release. That said, this is what you should expect from visionOS 2 beta 9 at this moment: Spatial photos: With visionOS 2 beta, users can revisit past memories by creating spatial photos directly from their library in the Photos app.  Home View:  Users can now personalize their Home View by rearranging apps and placing them wherever they want, including their compatible iPhone and iPad apps visionOS 2 beta makes navigating Apple Vision Pro faster and easier for users to access key functions with new hand gestures to get to frequently used features like Home View and Control Center. New gestures allow users to see important information at a glance, like the current time and battery level, and perform actions like adjusting the volume. In addition, travelers can experience their favorite apps on the go with a new Travel mode for trains. visionOS 2 beta 9 also adds: Guest user: For those moments when a user wants to share their Vision Pro, a family member or colleague can be added as a Guest User and have their eye and hand data saved for 30 days. The Apple TV app brings support for multiview to Apple Vision Pro for the ultimate sports-viewing experience. Later this year, fans can watch up to five simultaneous streams to keep track of all their favorite sports and teams. To help users achieve calm and focus, the Mindfulness app includes a new capability called Follow Your Breathing that presents dynamic visual animations and sounds that respond to the user’s breathing patterns. It's unclear if Apple is releasing other beta updates alongside visionOS 2 beta 9. We'll keep you posted. Android 15 is coming soon to the Pixel 9, but you can Circle to Search music right now

Google did things differently this year, releasing the Pixel 9 series several weeks before Android 15 was ready. That means early adopters will have Android 14 on their new Pixel phones out of the box, an unusual choice for Google, considering that the Pixel phones are the vessels that showcase Google's next version of Android. However, Google wanted to showcase something else this year. It wanted the world to see all the Gemini AI features you can use on the Pixel 9 right now, weeks before the iPhone 16 release and months before the arrival of Apple Intelligence. That said, Android 15 is still a priority for Google. The next-gen operating system is coming to AOSP on Tuesday. That's a step in the right direction, signaling that the Pixel phones will soon get Android 15, including the Pixel 9. On top of that, Google announced several new additions to Android you can use right now. The list includes new music recognition capabilities for Google's much-talked-about AI feature called Circle to Search. Continue reading... How to use Android’s new earthquake alerts tool

Google on Tuesday announced the expansion of the Android Earthquake Alert System to 50 US states and 6 US territories. The safety feature will send you a notification seconds before you even feel the tremors that come with significant seismic activities. Those extra few seconds could mean the difference between life and death, as the alerts should heopfully give you enough time to take cover and wait for the earthquake to stop. The good news about the new Android feature, which is already available in 97 other countries, is that you won't have to do anything to activate it. Continue reading... How Reliable are Computer Reconstructions of Ancient Faces?

By Konstantine Panegyres/The Conversation When we read about the lives of people from the ancient past, we naturally want to know what they looked like. But how do we find this out? In recent years, computer-assisted reconstructions of the faces of famous figures from the Greco-Roman world have become popular. In 2020, for example, a digital artist went viral for using artificial intelligence (AI) technology on the busts of Roman emperors to recreate their faces in a photo-realistic way. How are facial reconstructions done? The simplest form of facial reconstruction involves adding realistic-looking skin, eyes and hair to Greek or Roman busts. Other methods can be more complicated. One of the most famous facial reconstructions of any individual from the Greco-Roman world was the case of Hermione Grammatike. Hermione was a teacher in her 20s who died in Egypt in the early 1st century AD.   Read moreSection: NewsHistory & ArchaeologyRead Later
