A Texas police officer was shot multiple times on Sunday during a shootout with a 25-year-old Venezuelan national who entered the U.S. illegally and had been released by Border Patrol, Fox News reported. The shootout began after officers from the San Antonio Police Department responded to a domestic violence call around 3 a.m. and ended with the suspect, Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, dead, and an officer wounded. The officer is expected to survive after undergoing surgery on Sunday. It was unclear if the suspect was killed by return fire from police or if he committed suicide, according to Fox News. Chacon-Gutierrez illegally entered the U.S. in November 2023 and was apprehended by Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to law enforcement officials. He was then released into the country with a court date set for April 2026. SAPD Chief William McManus said, “When officers arrived, they learned that a female victim had been assaulted by her boyfriend. When officers went into the apartment, he was lying in bed with a rifle by his side.” A SWAT team entered the apartment and found the suspect, who was later pronounced dead, KSAT reported. The female victim in the domestic violence call was not seriously injured, according to police.
