Jupiter is a stunning planet to observe. Whether it be visible light or any other wavelength. In a stunning new image released by the University of California -Berkley, Jupiter is seen in ultraviolet light. The familiar Great Red Spot appears as a blue oval as do many of the familiar belt features. Around the polar regions are revealed a brown haze which is thought to be caused by a high altitude vortex mixing up the atmosphere. The jury is still out on the mechanism behind this though but it may be an interaction between Jupiter’s strong magnetic field which pierces the atmosphere near the poles.  Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, a gas giant with powerful storms. With a diameter of 143,000 km, Jupiter is 11 times wider than Earth and capable of swallowing all of the other planets in the Solar System and still have room to spare. It is composed or hydrogen and helium and lacks a solid surface. It’s atmosphere has bands of alternating colour with strong winds, hurricanes and lightning storms. The Great Red Spot is one of its most well known features, a hurricane system three times the size of Earth. It’s also home to a family of satellites including the four well known Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.  Side-by-side images show the opposite faces of Jupiter. The atmosphere of Jupiter is a complex system of thick clouds, storms and high winds. The hydrogen makes up about 90% of the atmosphere with helium the bulk of the remainder plus trace amounts of methane, water vapour and other compounds. The belts in the atmosphere appear to alternate between lighter and darker colours driven by different temperatures, chemical compositions and wind speeds that reach up to 640 km/hr. Lower down, beneath the visible layer, the atmosphere becomes denser, hotter and eventually becomes fluid. The oval shaped features are Earth-sized and only visible in the ultraviolet wavelengths. The ovals seems to consistently appear at a slightly lower latitude than the auroral zones around the poles. In the image, the ovals seem dark in colour due to absorption of ultraviolet radiation, more so than the brighter surrounding regions.  The Hubble Space Telescope orbits Earth at an altitude of 540 km and takes yearly images of Jupiter and the other planets. Hubble was the first telescope to capture the so called UV ovals and they have since been detected by the Cassini spacecraft. The team at UC Berkeley discovered that the ovals were more common around the south pole (appearing in 75% of images around south pole and only 12% around north pole.)  This image of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope was taken on May 19, 2009 after deployment during Servicing Mission 4. NASA The team spoke with planetary atmospherics experts Tom Stallard (Northumbria University in UK) and Xi Zhang (from UC Santa Cruz) to try and understand the mechanism. They theorise that Jupiter’s strong magnetic field lines experience friction in the ionosphere leading to the establishment of a vortex (a rotating, spinning flow of fluid or air.) An unprecedented discovery.

Might as well make this Christmas a Toby Keith Christmas. I know I've personally already added a couple of Big Dog Daddy holiday classics to my Christmas playlist so I can honor the country music legend that passed away back in February. It's hard to believe that in a short couple of months, we'll have all lived in a world without Toby Keith for a whole year. Luckily, Toby Keith left behind plenty of music to carry on his legacy, including a couple of Christmas albums that are perfect for when you want to spice your holiday season up with a little country twang. The Big Dog Daddy's final Christmas project was A Classic Christmas, which included 20 Christmas standards we've all come to know and love like "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree." Before that one (which he released in 2007), Keith put together a medley of original Christmas tunes in his 1995 album Christmas to Christmas. You might remember songs like "Blame It On The Mistletoe" and "Santa I'm Right Here," the latter of which peaked at number 50 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Or maybe you've never heard any of those songs? If that's the case, you are in luck, because the Christmas to Christmas album was just remastered and re-released - and even included a bonus song that's been a hard-to-find fan-favorite in recent years. The re-release will mark the first time the album has ever been available on vinyl (would be a great one to add to the collection), and the bonus song is Toby’s 2000 rendition of Roger Miller's “Old Toy Trains," which was previously only available on a compilation that has long been out-of-print. Some might not think of the Big Dog Daddy as a Christmas music maestro. I tend to call those people "uncultured." Real ones know that no genre or song was off limits for Toby Keith, and that when he dabbled in the Holiday tunes, he created Christmas GOLD. I'd like to see another artist try and put together a Christmas album of original songs. All anyone does nowadays is recycle the songs that have been around since the 1940s and 1950s and slap their face on it (and yes, I know that's what Keith did with his second holiday album). The good old days. Sadly, country legend Toby Keith passed away at the age of 62 after a long battle with stomach cancer in February, and I'm still sad about it... I know his friends and family will continue to miss him forever, and there will never be another one like him, that's for sure. Keith had charted 61 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts throughout his career, including an impressive 20 number one hits and 22 additional top 10 hits. His longest-lasting number one hits are "Beer for My Horses" (with Willie Nelson) and "As Good as I Once Was" in 2005. He was nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and though unfortunately, he never won one, which is a crying shame and a story for a whole different post. And with Thanksgiving happening tomorrow, which means plenty of food and football, I've been looking back on some of the greatest Dallas Cowboys halftime performances from over the years, which most recently includes Dolly Parton's iconic show last year, which she did dressed as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and stunned the world. But Toby's all-American halftime performance in Dallas back in 2003 is truly one of the best. Of course it was as patriotic as possible, with American flags everywhere, and all the DCC girls dancing along with each song. Toby had a full band out there, tons of production and some pyro, as well as many light up stars and a neat stage setup that unfolded into a Dallas Cowboy star at the beginning. From that standpoint alone, it was fun to watch, and he sang fan-favorite hits including “Beer For My Horses,” “How Do You Like Me Now!,” and “Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue (The Angry American),” which are classics to this day. He also had plenty of servicemen and women there, and made sure to play part of the National Anthem during the mini concert to honor all of them and this great country. But the big finale was easily the best part for me, when a massive eagle was raised up to the stage during the line in the chorus of "Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue " that says "And the eagle will fly it's gonna be hell..." It was really fun to watch this in 2024, because they truly just don't do it like this anymore... and they certainly don't do it like Toby Keith, that's for sure. While it's obviously really sad that he's no longer here on earth, making music and being the all-around bada** that he was, we'll always have this, and that's pretty special too. Kellogg is also close with former National Security Council chief of staff Fred Flietz, John Bolton’s former chief of staff. Kellogg, along with Flietz, presented a plan to Trump in June which would condition future military aid to Ukraine on Ukrainian participation in peace talks with Russia.  The plan, outlined in a paper published by the America First Policy Institute, also suggested that Ukrainian entry into NATO be at least delayed. “To convince Putin to join peace talks, President Biden and other NATO leaders should offer to put off NATO membership for Ukraine for an extended period in exchange for a comprehensive and verifiable peace deal with security guarantees,” the AFPI document stated.
