A Polyester-Dissolving Process Could Make Modern Clothing Recyclable

At the Univ. of Delaware, materials engineers have devised a chemical recycling method to separate artificial fibers like nylon from natural ones like cotton, promising a potentially breakthrough way to recycle clothing. The fashion and textile industries account for around 10% of all world landfill waste, much of which isn’t recyclable. Polyester, spandex, and nylon […] The post A Polyester-Dissolving Process Could Make Modern Clothing Recyclable appeared first on Good News Network.

Groundwater May Be Too Hot To Drink For Millions Of People By 2100

By 2100, more than 75 million people are likely to be living in places where the groundwater is too hot to drink, according to a new study. Groundwater temperatures are forecast to rise by up to 3.5°C (6.3°F) by the end of the century, which would mean they exceed the highest threshold set for drinking water by any country.Groundwater is crucial for life on Earth, and yet relatively little is known about how it responds to climate change over space and time. What we do know is that as things get hotter, it will act as a heat sink, absorbing excess heat caused by global warming. To work out what this might look like, researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have modeled projected changes in global groundwater temperatures through to 2100. Basing their projections on two climate scenarios, SSP 2–4.5 and SSP 5–8.5, which reflect different socioeconomic development pathways and future greenhouse gas concentrations, they have determined that groundwater temperatures will rise by 2.1°C (3.8°F) or 3.5°C (6.3°F), depending on the scenario. Some parts of the world will feel this spike more acutely, explained study author Dr Susanne Benz, from the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at KIT, in a statement: “[T]he world's highest groundwater warming rates can be expected at locations with a shallow groundwater table and/or high atmospheric warming."What this means, is that for millions of people worldwide, groundwater will become undrinkable."There are already about 30 million people living in regions where the groundwater is warmer than stipulated in the strictest drinking water guidelines,” said Benz. “That means it may not be safe to drink the water there without treatment. It may need to be boiled first, for example. The drinking water also gets warmed up in water pipes by heat in the ground. Depending on the scenario, as many as several hundred million people could be affected by 2100."In fact, the research suggests that in the next 76 years, between 77 to 188 million people could be affected as per SSP 2–4.5, and 59 to 588 million under SSP 5–8.5.In case you’re wondering what’s wrong with a little warm water, let us explain. Groundwater’s temperature influences a suite of biogeochemical processes that in turn impact its quality. For example, "under certain conditions, rising groundwater temperatures can lead to increasing concentrations of harmful substances like arsenic or manganese. These higher concentrations can have a negative impact on human health, especially when groundwater is used as drinking water," Benz explained. It can also facilitate the growth of pathogens such as Legionella spp, and affects ecosystems, biodiversity, and carbon and nutrient cycles. All in all, it’s not great news for us or the other organisms that rely on groundwater systems."Our results show how important it is to take action to protect groundwater and find lasting solutions to counteract the negative impact of climate change on groundwater," Benz concluded. The study is published in Nature Geoscience.

Death Valley Reaches 54°C As Week-Long Near-World Record Temperatures Expected

“Scorching temperatures” and “Death Valley” are two terms that aren’t particularly surprising to see together, but a record-breaking, long-running heatwave that’s currently baking the western US has taken the notoriously hot region to near-world record extremes over the last week.Temperatures in the aptly named Furnace Creek – which holds the (sometimes disputed) title for the world’s highest recorded temperature of 56.7°C (134°F) – started creeping into the late 40s early last week, before hitting 50°C (122°F) on July 3.The heat continued to rise throughout the week until on Sunday, temperatures reached a searing 54°C (129°F). Such highs are expected to continue through to July 11 and as a result, the National Weather Service has put out an excessive heat warning until late on Thursday evening.Similarly, Death Valley National Park currently has an “Extreme Summer Heat” alert in place advising visitors of the necessary precautions to deal with the sweltering temperatures.“Expect high temperatures of 100°F to 130°F (43°C to 54°C). Minimize time outside in heat. Do not hike after 10 am. Drink plenty of water. Travel prepared to survive; cell phones do not work in most of the park,” reads the alert.Alerts like these are put in place as the risk of heat-related illness goes up in such extreme heat. On Saturday, a group of six motorcyclists traveling through Badwater Basin all fell ill; one member of the party died, whilst another was taken to hospital with “severe heat illness”.“Besides not being able to cool down while riding due to high ambient air temperatures, experiencing Death Valley by motorcycle when it is this hot is further challenged by the necessary heavy safety gear worn to reduce injuries during an accident,” read a statement from the park seen by CNN.“While this is a very exciting time to experience potential world record setting temperatures in Death Valley, we encourage visitors to choose their activities carefully, avoiding prolonged periods of time outside of an air-conditioned vehicle or building when temperatures are this high,” said park superintendent Mike Reynolds in the statement.Death Valley National Park also saw a heatwave back in mid-June, with a heat alert put in place during Juneteenth celebrations, when entry to the park – and every other National Park – was free. The recent heat is quite the turn of events compared to earlier this year, when an atmospheric river dumped 38 millimeters (1.5 inches) of rain on Death Valley in just three days, putting life back into an unexpectedly persistent ephemeral lake – though if it hadn’t already disappeared, we’re pretty sure the last week would’ve sped up the process.

A Trump-Thomas ticket would be a game-changer for 2024

A Trump-Thomas ticket would be a game-changer for 2024

Donald Trump has yet to announce his vice presidential running mate, a decision he doesn't take lightly. While there are many fine Republicans, Trump should consider only two: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Here is some unsolicited advice, respectfully submitted.Thomas has been a pillar of the American republic for nearly half a century. No one has demonstrated more political courage, except for President Trump, than Justice Thomas. Normally, it would be fine to leave Thomas on the Supreme Court. But our republic is broken, and we are in a revolutionary moment that requires thinking outside the box. This election will decide the future of the country. Why not go all in with the two finest political figures we have: Donald Trump and Clarence Thomas? If the MAGA base and the political right in America unite, they will have a fighting chance to turn this around.Intellectually, Thomas has demonstrated an unparalleled devotion to the principles of the American founding. His application of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to the legal and political crisis we find ourselves in today has had a profound and enduring impact on American jurisprudence. His understanding of the natural law and his common-sense legal opinions have reshaped the court in decisive ways.Politically, Thomas is in a unique position. He is an elder statesman whom both the American people and the Republican political class respect. The MAGA base and traditional Republican Party members look to Thomas as a bulwark of traditional American morality and common sense. Not only does he represent the best of American constitutional thinking, but he is also an eminently good man with a good and lovely wife. Millions already love Trump, and a Trump-Thomas ticket would generate unprecedented energy. Thomas is the kind of man for whom millions of Americans — especially Christians — would tirelessly walk precincts. The reason is simple: The MAGA base wants a running mate for President Trump who is authentically MAGA, not a pretender like Nikki Haley or Doug Burgum. And at the most fundamental political level, the Democrats, should they have the majority, would not dream of impeaching President Trump with Vice President Clarence Thomas in the wings. For whom else could that be said? Some will say that a Trump-Thomas ticket is crazy because Justice Thomas would have to give up his seat on the court. This is true, but unless overwhelming numbers of Americans vote for President Trump in November and overcome attempts to steal the election, Democrats will win the White House, along with the House of Representatives and Senate. They will then pack the Supreme Court, making Justice Thomas a minority view. If victorious, who better to advise President Trump on the future of the court than Vice President Thomas? But, of course, Trump may not be able to pry Thomas from the court. In that case, the other choice is a nod to practical electoral politics: Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. It is well known that Trump and Kemp are not the best of friends. To put it mildly, they did not see eye to eye on how the 2020 election was conducted in the Peach State. Some might say Kemp didn’t fully apply his experience and proficiency as a former Georgia secretary of state to ensure a fraud-free 2020 election, impacted by changes to election laws due to COVID-19 lockdowns. This could be remedied in 2024. Kemp is one of the most skilled politicians in the country. If he were on the national ticket, he would ensure a free and fair election in Georgia. Under these circumstances, President Trump could win the state’s crucial 16 electoral votes. No other potential running mate offers this possibility. It's true Kemp represents a more establishment part of the Republican Party. Bringing this faction back into the fold to join President Trump's MAGA base is crucial. In politics, unity is assumed come election time, but that was not the case in 2020 and 2022. If President Trump is to return to the White House, party unity is indispensable in 2024.Many within the MAGA base will be appalled by such a selection. However, this is about political math. Georgia’s 16 electoral votes are critical. While Kemp has many establishment tendencies and is not MAGA on several issues, he is a traditional conservative on illegal immigration and gun rights. He was also among the best governors in the country during the COVID-19 lockdowns, keeping schools open and businesses running.Whatever differences Republicans may have, the country is being torn apart. It may already be too late to reverse course. One thing is for sure: If the MAGA base and the political right in America unite, they will have a fighting chance to turn this around.

How ‘media literacy’ threatens American freedoms

How ‘media literacy’ threatens American freedoms

What if I told you that the recent push for “media literacy” across the United States is less about empowering citizens and more about eroding our First Amendment rights? Beneath this benign-sounding initiative lies a far more sinister agenda: a concerted effort by the government and certain radical organizations to control the flow of information, stifle independent thought, and ultimately undermine our freedoms. The campaign for “media literacy” is nothing less than a calculated propaganda effort designed to brand patriotic Americans who cherish the Constitution as “domestic violent extremists,” according to the Biden administration's own terminology. The true aim of the media literacy movement is not to educate but to indoctrinate. Not to inform but to control. The extremist label can be applied with alarming ease to any individual or group that threatens the established order. It serves as a powerful tool to silence dissent and marginalize those who argue for constitutional principles and the preservation of American liberties. By conflating patriotism with extremism, the government aims to create a chilling effect, discouraging citizens from speaking out against policies they perceive as unjust or unconstitutional. The media literacy movement aims to establish an information hierarchy in which only content from mainstream media and government agencies is credible. This strategy deliberately delegitimizes independent media and journalists who question the official narrative. By labeling alternative viewpoints as “misinformation,” these entities aim to suppress dissent and limit public access to diverse perspectives. One of the most alarming aspects of this campaign is its infiltration into the education system. Radical organizations like the News Literacy Project, which pretend to be nonpartisan, have embedded their curricula in schools across all 50 states. In states like California, media literacy has even become a graduation requirement, and it is only a matter of time before the requirement goes national. These programs teach students that true literacy means consuming information exclusively from “approved” sources, while branding those who seek out independent media as illiterate. This Orwellian redefinition of literacy aims to condition young minds to accept government-approved narratives without question. Courage Is a Habit created a tool, Media Literacy Scam: Infiltration in K-12, to empower parents with the confidence to stop this propaganda in their children's K-12 schools. Parents, wanting the best for their children, often fall for this deceptive rhetoric. They assume fostering “literacy” is beneficial, unaware that the term now means something different. Instead of encouraging critical thinking and independent research, these programs push students into a narrow worldview where questioning the status quo is seen as ignorance. The concept of “misinformation” is another tool in this propaganda arsenal. Traditionally, misinformation referred to false or misleading information spread unintentionally. Not any more. Government agencies and their surrogates, like the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, have weaponized the term to discredit any information that challenges their preferred narratives. This manipulation of language limits open conversation and critical thinking, paving the way for more insidious forms of censorship. By labeling dissenting opinions as dangerous “misinformation,” these entities create a pretext for calling “wrong speech” “hate speech.” This slippery slope justifies labeling individuals or groups as “domestic terrorists” and “extremists” simply for exercising their right to free speech and questioning the government. The implications for our republic are profound. If left unchecked, this trend could erode the very foundation of American freedom: the First Amendment. On Joe Biden's first day in office, he instructed his national security team to review U.S. efforts to address domestic terrorism. This review led to the Biden administration’s “National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism.” The strategy identified the two biggest domestic terrorism threats as racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists who advocate for white supremacy and anti-government or anti-authority violent extremists. To counter these “domestic violent extremists,” the Department of Homeland Security was directed to fund, implement, or plan digital programming, including media literacy, as a way to combat disinformation and misinformation online. The Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships provides financial assistance, training, and resources through its Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention grants. On January 17, U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling out the agency’s weaponization of taxpayer dollars to attack conservatives with TVTP money. Hawley cited the University of Rhode Island’s Media Education Lab, which received a $700,000 TVTP grant. “In its application, the Lab wrote that it would address ‘propaganda and misinformation concerning topics including immigration, racial justice, the coronavirus, and vaccination’ and ‘build on top of concerns about so-called “fake news” and “cancel culture.”' The Lab planned to use funds to create ‘counter-propaganda." All on the taxpayers’ dime. The insidious nature of the media literacy scam cannot be overstated. It represents a direct assault on the principles of free speech and open inquiry that are the bedrock of a healthy nation. In an era when information is power, controlling the narrative means controlling the populace. The true aim of the media literacy movement is not to educate but to indoctrinate. Not to inform but to control. As Americans, it is our duty to remain vigilant and defend our constitutional rights against such encroachments. We must challenge the legitimacy of these so-called media literacy programs and demand transparency and accountability from the organizations that promote them. It is imperative that we advocate a more accurate definition of literacy, one that encourages critical thinking, open dialogue, and the free exchange of ideas. The media literacy scam, as currently promoted, is a wolf in sheep's clothing. By exposing and opposing this propaganda effort, we can protect our First Amendment rights and ensure that future generations inherit a nation where freedom of speech and the pursuit of truth are cherished and protected.

Gavin Newsom can’t wait to jump into the presidential race

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has played the part of the ever-loyal surrogate following Joe Biden’s debate disaster. “We gotta have the back of this president,” Newsom told MSNBC’s Alex Wagner in the spin room following the Atlanta debate. “You don’t turn your back because of one performance. What kind of party does that?” He even went so far as to campaign for Biden in Michigan, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania last week. “I believe in this man,” Newsom said in Michigan. “I believe in his character. I believe that he has been one of the most transformative presidents in our collective lifetime.” Despite Newsom’s claims to support Biden’s continued candidacy, Newsom’s tactics and political record suggest that he is salivating at the chance of securing the Democratic nomination. Newsom’s overwhelming desire to replace Biden as the Democratic nominee is no surprise. All he cares about is power. Newsom should continue supporting Biden to position himself for the Democratic ticket. If Biden steps down and Jill Biden lets go of her power, having the president’s support will be key to winning the nomination. Biden, a notoriously proud man who avoids criticism, will not endorse a candidate who did not stand by him until the end. Newsom’s tactics continue the strategy he has used for the past two years: denying any intention to replace Joe Biden on the 2024 ticket while doing everything possible to position himself for that opportunity. For example, last year Newsom toured Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Mississippi to promote his vision of total progressivism nationwide. At the New College of Florida, the media asked if this national effort meant he would seek the presidency in 2024. Newsom denied it, saying, “I want to meet the moment. I want to be able to look my kids in the eye and say I did everything I could and put it all out in the field.” In addition to his red-state tour, Newsom has made his presidential ambitions clear through his debate with then-candidate Ron DeSantis, Fox News appearances, nationally focused super PAC, international tours, and a proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution. Few believe Newsom’s claims that he is not seeking the presidency. In November 2023, when Newsom’s political godfather, Willie Brown, was asked whether Newsom wanted to be president, he said, “There is no way in the world that anybody who has ever met him would answer that question any differently than ‘He would like already to be president.’” The New York Times reported last year that Newsom is “waiting by the sidelines on the off chance that Mr. Biden ends up not running in 2024.” For a while, Newsom’s national efforts angered Biden’s campaign. Campaign officials believed he was not sufficiently rebuffing speculation that he would challenge the president for the nomination. Only after repeatedly disavowing any presidential ambitions and supporting the president — campaigning for him, fundraising for him, and vouching for him on cable news — did Newsom earn the Biden campaign’s trust, and he became Biden’s leading surrogate. His role culminated when he was dispatched to Atlanta as the president’s foremost defender in the debate spin room. This positioned Newsom to be waiting in the wings when Biden’s campaign faltered so publicly. This moment of total Democratic panic over Biden’s age is not only what Newsom has been waiting and hoping for over the past two years. It is the culmination of his lifelong ambitions. As I detail in my book, “ Newsom Unleashed: The Progressive Lust for Unbridled Power,” Newsom has demonstrated throughout his entire political career that all he cares about is climbing the next rung of the political ladder. He has been transparent about his ambitions from the start. In 1998, when he was an unelected member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, he said, “If you’re in politics and you want to make an impact, you should be as successful as possible, and the most influential position is president.” When Newsom was preparing to run for mayor of San Francisco, he was so focused on his campaign that he neglected to spend time with his dying mother. When she called him to tell him she had decided to die by assisted suicide, he was so busy that her call went to voicemail. After Newsom became mayor of San Francisco, he neglected the city's day-to-day operations to position himself for the governorship. This move caused his progressive colleagues to turn against him. Aaron Peskin, a member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, told the Los Angeles Times: “Part of the role of mayor is to be a star. … He’s certainly fulfilled that role, to be glamorous, to keep the city’s name in the minds of tourists and residents as a first-class city. … In terms of being the chief executive officer, keeping his hands on the levers of power, holding department heads accountable, he’s been less successful.” As lieutenant governor, Newsom focused on climbing the political ladder instead of governing. While filming his TV program, “The Gavin Newsom Show,” he was asked how much time he spent in Sacramento. “Like one day a week, tops,” he replied. “There’s no reason.” He then complained that his elected office was “just so dull.” With an exasperated sigh, he added, “Sadly, I just, ugh, God.” One month after beginning his second term as lieutenant governor, Newsom announced he would form an exploratory committee to run for governor. Newsom’s overwhelming desire to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee is no surprise. All he cares about is power. What remains to be seen is whether, should Biden step aside, Newsom’s efforts to ingratiate himself with the Biden campaign and position himself nationally will be enough to win him the nomination against a host of candidates with the sex and race Democrats prefer.

I like the solo style of Cyberpunk 2077. My V is a lone samurai, stalking the streets of Night City and trying to atone for a lifetime of wrongs in just a few short weeks. But even I have to admit that the thought of causing chaos with a group of borged-out chooms is appealing. Well, the dream of many is now within grasp, as a stunning new mod looks set to introduce worldwide multiplayer to CD Projekt Red's latest game.
