This issue of the magazine is all about video game rental stores. Like most gamers from this era, I have plenty of memories of renting games and enjoying them with friends and family. I am going to share one of my earliest gaming memories that involves a rental store. The trend of movie rental stores having games for rent was a slow process where I grew up. The prominent stores didn’t buy\ into the game rentals until late 1987, but a lot of our convenience stores had small sections for movie rentals to try and expand their revenue. You could go in for chips and a soda, and also rent a movie for the night, saving an entire trip to the movie store. The selection was smaller but it was nice to have options. These types of stores adopted the game rentals very quickly. Many communities practice bulk leaf removal services during the fall months. Residents move their leaf piles to the street so the city can pick them up with heavy equipment for disposal or composting. Some residents may grow impatient while waiting for the heavy equipment. Other residents take a more positive tact, referring to this minor inconvenience as having front-row seats to the tractor ballet. @carmenthecoolcat ballet ♬ original sound – balletbulletin Sitting at a standstill with nothing better to do, watching the tractor ballet could be entertaining. The equipment operators drive with precision and skill. They use the buckets to scoop up the leaves and then pivot to deposit their load in the dump truck. These two tractor drivers work with seemingly choreographed precision as they deftly maneuver to make short work of the tedious project. Set to background music from “The Nutcracker,” two tractors and a dump truck prepared for the show. The tractors backed into position and then pulled forward to fill their buckets. Image from TikTok. Both loaders quickly move backward again as the truck driver takes his queue and pulls into position. The tractors move forward to perform a delicate simultaneous bucket dump. Image from TikTok. As the truck moves forward, the loaders gracefully pivot in reverse. Repositioned, they move forward to scoop more leaves from the street in a passing motion. The tractor on the right repeats the movement, pushing the remaining leaves off onto the side street. With a perfect reverse two-point turn, the dump truck follows both tractors onto the side road. Once the road was cleared, the beautifully choreographed dance ended. This scene is playing out in communities all over the country.
