Hulu’s best Black Friday deal is back with $.99 a month for an entire year

You can’t even buy a bag of chips for $1 anymore. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Hulu is again running one of the best streaming deals we’ve seen in Black Friday sales. Now through December 2nd, new and returning (after more than one month) Hulu subscribers can get ad-supported access to the streaming service for $.99 a month ($9 off) for an entire year at Hulu. You can also find the Disney Bundle Duo Basic, which includes Hulu and Disney Plus each with ads, at the same link for $2.99 a month over the next 12 months, saving you $8 per month. Your charges will jump back to $9.99 and $10.99, respectively, if you don’t cancel before then. The deal comes as part of a promotion from ABC. From a price standpoint, Hulu alone is an attractive offer, and there’s more content to dig into than you’d probably have time to... Continue reading…

Dongba: The Last Hieroglyph and the Struggle to Save Naxi Culture

The Dongba symbols are an ancient system of pictographic glyphs created by the founder of the Bön religious tradition of Tibet and used by the Naxi people in southern China.  Historical records show that this unique script was used as early as the 7th century, during the early Tang Dynasty, however, research conducted last year showed that its origins may date back as far as 7,000 years ago.   Incredibly, the Dongba symbols continue to be used by the elders of the Naxi people, making it the only hieroglyphic language still used in the world today. Outgoing Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg taps P. Diddy for mission to destroy Uranus

Washington, D.C. – In a surprising twist to his final days as Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg announced a groundbreaking—some would say eyebrow-raising—space mission during a press conference Tuesday. The mission? To send rapper and mogul P. Diddy to destroy Uranus. Standing at a podium adorned with a NASA logo he may or may not have been authorized to use, Buttigieg explained the rationale for the mission. “Throughout my tenure, I’ve been committed to addressing the most pressing transportation challenges of our time. And now, it’s time to tackle the final frontier. Quite frankly, Uranus is a problem we can no longer ignore.” Asked for clarification, Buttigieg gestured toward a large, colorful diagram of the solar system. “Look, every time someone says ‘Uranus,’ people giggle. It undermines the credibility of the entire space community. If we’re going to be taken seriously as a spacefaring nation, Uranus must go.” P. Diddy, who was present at the announcement in a silver spacesuit and aviator sunglasses, nodded solemnly. “I’ve been sent to the moon musically,” he said, referencing his 1999 hit album Forever, “but now I’m ready to take it literal. Uranus will never see me coming.” The plan, dubbed “Operation Planetary Swagger,” involves launching a retrofitted private jet fueled by Bad Boy Records nostalgia directly at Uranus. “It’s not just about destruction,” Buttigieg clarified. “It’s about setting an example. A transportation secretary doesn’t just build highways; he removes interstellar roadblocks, even metaphorical ones.” The mission has drawn sharp criticism from the scientific community. Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted, “Destroy Uranus? That’s like trying to cancel Pluto all over again. This is why people don’t trust politicians in space.” Buttigieg responded to detractors, saying, “To those who question the necessity of this mission, I say: have you ever tried to talk about Uranus without someone making a joke? My husband Chasten can’t even say it at dinner without snorting. This is bigger than science; it’s about dignity.” President Biden issued a supportive statement: “Look, folks, Pete’s got the right idea here. Back in my day, we didn’t have Uranus jokes, just good old-fashioned Corn Pop stories. Send Diddy up there and let’s see what he can do. God bless America.” Critics on social media suggested other targets, including “whatever planet TikTok influencers come from” or Elon Musk’s Tesla orbiting the sun. While many remain skeptical of Operation Planetary Swagger, Buttigieg remained optimistic. “This is about legacy. When people think of me as Transportation Secretary, I want them to think of progress, innovation, and yes, eliminating Uranus once and for all.” P. Diddy concluded the press conference by announcing the mission’s official anthem: a remix of I’ll Be Missing You dedicated to Uranus. The track is expected to drop right before the scheduled 2026 launch. The post Outgoing Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg taps P. Tim Allen And Jamie Lee Curtis’ Christmas Comedy Movie Makes Successful Comeback 20 Years Later

Tim Allen has appeared in multiple Christmas hit movies including The Santa Clause series, where he played Santa, and one from 2004 with Jamie Lee Curtis, Christmas With The Kranks. Unlike the former, Christmas With The Kranks was a flop on release, with a meager 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was based on John Grisham’s Skipping Christmas and featured Tim and Jamie as a married couple who opt out of Christmas celebrations as their daughter travels for a Peace Corps mission. Two decades later, Christmas With The Kranks is the 10th most streamed movie on Hulu. Why is Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis’ movie only now trending? CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis, 2004/Everett With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, families are seeking entertainment and may sometimes go back in time to find it. People love a bit of nostalgia during the festive season, which explains why Christmas and Thanksgiving movies remain timeless thanks to yearly re-runs. Christmas With The Kranks is also relatable, as Tim is not wearing a Santa costume this time but is a person with real-life experience. The movie also ends with the characters becoming better, selfless people, which is sometimes the bottom line of family reunions during the holiday. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tim Allen, 2004/Everett Why did ‘Christmas With The Kranks’ perform so badly at first? The sudden successful comeback of Christmas With The Kranks makes people wonder why it was not well received at first. Likely, viewers did not take well to the forced slapstick comedy and the rebellion against the festive spirit by the couple. CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, Tim Allen, Erik Per Sullivan, 2004/Everett People tune in to holiday films for inspiration and reminders that Christmas is in the air, but the film’s plot was anti-Yuletide for the most part. The release of competing movies, which attained viewer expectations also pushed Christmas With The Kranks to the back burner. Over time, it has achieved holiday classic status and is slowly gaining appreciation.
