NY Times: Jews ‘Incited’ Dutch Attacks, Use ‘Pogrom’ Word in ‘Agenda Against Muslims’

NY Times: Jews ‘Incited’ Dutch Attacks, Use ‘Pogrom’ Word in ‘Agenda Against Muslims’

Marc Tracy, arts and culture reporter for the New York Times, for some reason wrote a 2,100-word “news analysis,” posted Sunday, on why Jews shouldn’t use the word “pogrom” to describe assaults like the one in Amsterdam against people suspected of being Jews, after a soccer match by an Israeli team there: “The Amsterdam Attacks and the Long Shadow of ‘Pogroms’ -- Many have used an old word to refer to recent events. Is it accurate?” The Times doesn’t seem to think so, given it put the word in quotation marks. Tracy worked to underplay the dangers Jews face around the world, and offered some potential mitigating circumstances to explain the latest violent anti-Semitic rampage, with marauding Jew-haters on mopeds going on an actual jodenjacht  -- “Jew Hunt.” All inspired by the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust, committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, may have touched off a diplomatic incident last week when she said on a Dutch television show that she regretted having used the word “pogrom” the day after attacks on Israelis in her city surrounding a soccer match. Since the incidents, which began late on the night before the Nov. 7 game, Ms. Halsema, a member of the Green Party, said she had seen “the word politicized to the point of propaganda.” In response, Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, called Ms. Halsema’s statement “utterly unacceptable.” Referring to the attacks, he said, “There is no other word for this than a pogrom.” The word “pogrom” described loosely organized, often deadly riots by local Russians or Eastern Europeans against Jews from the 1880s through the end of the Bolshevik Revolution some 40 years later…. The eagerness of Mr. Saar to reaffirm the word -- echoing statements made  by Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, and Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism -- reflected the international Jewish community’s increased sensitivity to antisemitism in the year since Hamas led an attack into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 and kidnapped about 250 others. At the same time, Ms. Halsema’s hesitance to use “pogrom” amplified the concern that such rhetoric is being deployed to forward an agenda against Muslims. The Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who also used the word, leads a far-right party that won a plurality of votes last year on a platform that called for ending immigration from Muslim countries, taxing head scarves and banning the Quran. Mr. Wilders has called Moroccan immigrants “scum.” Surely Tracy is not trying to hint here that Jews bore some responsibility for being attacked in Amsterdam? “Pogrom” has a historical association with European antisemitism, inflicted in czarist Russia and elsewhere on largely defenseless Jews. The antisemitic attacks in Amsterdam had a different context: international outrage over Israel’s destructive war in Gaza that followed Hamas’s attack. Tracy went on to imply that Jews in Europe and elsewhere are overreacting (are those “liberal democracies” really protecting Jews?). And how does a well-armed IDF help a soccer fan survive being kicked in the teeth in The Netherlands? Even aside from the Dutch situation, there is a concern for many in the Jewish community and beyond that using “pogrom” is inaccurate or inappropriate at a time when most Jews live either in liberal democracies that are committed to protecting their rights as minorities or, of course, in a sovereign Jewish state with a famously well-armed military. Later it was time for blaming the victim. On the night of Wednesday, Nov. 6, some fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv, a prominent club that had traveled to Amsterdam to play the Dutch squad Ajax in a league soccer match, chanted incendiary and racist slogans, pulled down a Palestinian flag and attacked a cab. Palestinian solidarity has been amply displayed in Amsterdam during the past year of a war that has killed tens of thousands of Gazans, including many women and children. The Times managed not to mention Muslims as the Amsterdam attackers, but did claim that Muslims have historically also been victims of “pogroms.” The same night, Amsterdam cabdrivers -- many of whom are of Moroccan or Turkish heritage -- answered a call spread over apps such as Telegram to gather outside a casino holding hundreds of Israeli fans. A security guard at the casino promised to tip others off should the fans show up again. “Tomorrow after the game in the night,” a participant replied, “part two of Jew hunt.” After the match the next night, Israeli fans were assaulted in hit-and-run attacks. Online videos indicate that victims were targeted for being Israeli or Jewish. Five Israelis were hospitalized and discharged, and there were a few dozen injuries, said the police, who detained more than 60 people (including some from Israel). Tracy seemed to hold out the possibility that the Jews had at least somewhat “incited” the attacks, in defiance of all the recorded timelines of what happened over the two nights (the attacks on Maccabi fans were pre-planned). By that logic, Jews would be justified attacking any pro-Hamas rally using the eliminationist slogan “From the river to the sea! Palestine will be free!” The inciting and violent behavior of the Maccabi fans does not mean that what happened next cannot be considered a pogrom, scholars said. Russian pogroms often flared during moments of political crisis amid rumors that Jews had committed provocations…. The Times reporter seemed determined to be irresponsibly provocative: A pogrom perpetrated by Jews? In fact, most scholars agree that a pogrom could be perpetrated by Jews. Observers sympathetic to Palestinians, including some Israelis, have called an attack last year by Israelis on the town of Huwara, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, a pogrom. In 1983, an official Israeli commission said attacks committed by Christian militias the previous year at two Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon were “massacres and pogroms” for which Israeli leaders deserved “indirect blame.” Again Tracy suggests there was a “both-sides” aspect to the attacks on Jews. A modern strain of conservative Jewish thought finds one all-consuming root cause for anti-Jewish incidents: ineradicable antisemitism….But for Israeli critics of the current government like Mr. Dekel-Chen, deploying “pogrom” short-circuits the contemplation of other, more contingent developments that may have empowered Israel’s enemies. What “contingent developments” could possibly justify violent anti-Semitic assaults?

Whiners: Hostin, Whoopi Want to Disengage from Politics After Trump's Win

During the Monday edition of ABC’s The View, moderator Whoopi Goldberg and co-host Sunny Hostin made it obvious that they essentially wanted to take their ball and go home three weeks after Donald Trump became president-elect for the second time. The sore losers suggested that the election results proved that America hated the existence of black women and that the election supposedly happened without their personal input. Hostin, who’s claimed the election results were due to America’s racism, Latino misogyny, and “uneducated white women,” once again delved into toxic identity politics to huff that black women (“the backbone of the Democratic Party”) like her were “very disappointed” in America. Quoting and agreeing with comments from far-left liberal activist LaTosha Brown, Hostin proclaimed that black women were “re-evaluating how they want to engage in this democracy.” She bloviated that black women feel like America hates them personally: And LaTosha said this this weekend: “America is going to have to save herself.” She said, “people can rely on black women to lead change, but the next four years will look different. That's not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me.” And I think a lot of black women are feeling that way. Anti-Trump Republican Alyssa Farah Griffin, who has been trying to claw her way back into the good graces of the Republican Party since Trump won, wanted them to stay away from the “apocalyptic” rhetoric about the incoming Trump administration.     She opined about how she was “root[ing] for America” and their doomsaying predictions weren’t real: The American system of government is strong. It's held. There are checks and balances even if my party's in control of the House, the Senate, and the presidency. And I think we should root -- I root for America, so I root for a smart, serious Donald Trump presidency, and I root for pushback when he doesn't do things that are smart and serious. “I think all those things are great to dream about,” Goldberg scoffed at rooting for America. Despite making up insane lies like Trump wanting to redistribute white spouses from interracial marriages, having Vice President Kamala Harris on the show and introducing her “the next president of the United States,” headlining a Broadway rally for Harris, and supposedly voting, Goldberg claimed – like a supreme-sore loser snowflake – that “this process was handled without me.” Goldberg went on to whine about people calling her out for constantly peddling toxic identity politics. She defended herself by arguing that others supposedly did it to her first, so she had no choice: Yeah, because the things I was looking for – and I listen to people make fun of it. ‘It's not about race. It's not about misogyny.’ It is for me. It is for me because that's how you see me first. So that's how I have to respond to you. Earlier in the segment, fake Republican Ana Navarro spoke about when a future leftist resistance movement to Trump would mobilize. “I think a lot of us are still apoplectic that America voted against a qualified woman again and put in, you know, this -- this racist, misogynist, and they don't care,” she decried. “So, I think people are exhausted. I think they are looking at, you know, taking care of themselves before they take care of America.” According to her, before they could really launch their resistance movement they needed to "take some bubble baths for a little bit." “I got to breathe. My mental health has got to be in a good place. My physical health has got to be in a good place,” she said. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read: ABC’s The View November 25, 2024 11:05:16 a.m. Eastern (…) ANA NAVARRO: This does feel different than 2016. In 2016, at this time, the Women's March was being planned. That began getting planned the election night, and it began with a Facebook post of a housewife in Hawaii, and it turned into millions of women marching all over the country the day after the inauguration. I think – Look, we're all eight years older. I think a lot of us are still apoplectic that America voted against a qualified woman again and put in, you know, this -- this racist, misogynist, and they don't care. And so, it’s like – So, it's tiring. It is exhausting. It is disappointed. I think this election cycle was an emotional roller coaster, right? We had Joe Biden, the debate, two assassination attempts, Kamala coming in and running hard, leaving it all on the field for 107 days, and then we thought she was going to win like we did with Hillary in 2016, and she didn't. So, I think people are exhausted. I think they are looking at, you know, taking care of themselves before they take care of America. Right? I got to breathe. My mental health has got to be in a good place. My physical health has got to be in a good place. That doesn't mean we're going to tune out for four years, but it means we're going to take some bubble baths for a little bit. SUNNY HOSTIN: Yeah. I think that's true. [Applause] There were a couple of articles over the weekend about how black women in particular, were dealing with this because we know that 9 out of 10 black women voted for Kamala Harris, and that historically black women are sort of the backbone of the Democratic Party. Right? And so 92 percent of black women voted for Kamala Harris. So, you have 92 percent of black women, very disappointed and feeling some of the things that you are feeling [gestures to Navarro]. So, I think people are taking a moment to take care of themselves. Self-care is really big. I think they're also re-evaluating how they want to engage in this democracy. She's a friend of mine, but LaTosha Brown is also the co-founder of the national voting rights group, Black Voters Matter. And while a lot of people said Stacey Abrams was sort of the architect of Georgia going blue. It was actually LaTosha brown that was on the ground. And Stacey Abrams has admitted that. And LaTosha said this this weekend: “America is going to have to save herself.” She said, “people can rely on black women to lead change, but the next four years will look different. That's not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me.” And I think a lot of black women are feeling that way. (…) 11:09:10 a.m. Eastern ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: The American system of government is strong. It's held. There are checks and balances even if my party's in control of the House, the Senate, and the presidency. And I think we should root -- I root for America, so I root for a smart, serious Donald Trump presidency, and I root for pushback when he doesn't do things that are smart and serious. WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Yeah. I think all those things are great to dream about, and – [Laughter and applause] They're great, but -- FARAH GRIFFIN: I mean, we can take bubble baths for four years, or we can just engage in the process. GOLDBERG: As I've always said, you know, this process was handled without me. HOSTIN: Yeah. GOLDBERG: Yeah, because the things I was looking for – and I listen to people make fun of it. ‘It's not about race. It's not about misogyny.’ It is for me. It is for me because that's how you see me first. So that's how I have to respond to you. And I don't think this is what you're saying. I want to be really clear because you know how they like to always put us, oh, and she was mean to her. HOSTIN: Yes. GOLDBERG: I understand all the things you want to see him be. I understand all the things that he promised he would be, and he wasn't, nd now that he has been given carte blanche, I'm not going to waste a lot of time on what he might do. I'm going to -- I'm going to wait because I need to see what he will do so that I know what I'm going to do. (…)

CNN poll finds significant response to Trump transition and how Democrats are dealing with defeat: 'They have just given up'

CNN poll finds significant response to Trump transition and how Democrats are dealing with defeat: 'They have just given up'

A new poll from CNN finds that Americans are far more positive toward President-elect Donald Trump's transition as compared to eight years ago and also that Democrats have largely "given up."CNN poll analyst Harry Enten reviewed the results in a segment on CNN, where he showed a double-digit jump in the favorability rating for Trump. 'The bottom line is this: Republicans very motivated by Donald Trump's win.' Enten said that most presidential candidates get a jump in approval rating after getting elected, but Trump got a only 1% increase following his surprise victory in 2016. That has spiked to 18% eight years later. "Look at where we are today, significantly higher, plus 18 points. That's 17 points higher on the presidential transition net approval rating. The bottom line is this: If eight years ago Americans were lukewarm on Donald Trump, at this particular point they're giving him much more the benefit of the doubt," he explained. "A lot more Americans are in love with this transition; this much more meets the historical norm," Enten concluded. He went on to say that Americans are also far more positive in general about the prospects of a second Trump term, according to other results from the polling. "Let's compare ourselves now versus where we were eight years ago, and what you see eight years ago, 53% of Americans were scared or concerned, the majority, towards the upcoming Trump term," said Enten. "Look at where we are now. The shoe is on the other foot," he continued. "53% of Americans are excited or optimistic. It's flip-flopped, where a narrow majority eight years ago were scared or concerned about the upcoming Trump term. Now what we see is that the majority is excited or optimistic about the Trump term."As if that good news wasn't enough for Trump, Democrats are also completely demoralized after the stunning loss of the presidential election, the loss of the U.S. Senate to Republicans, and the Republicans' retention of the U.S. House. "I think one word to describe Democrats right now is that they're exhausted," said Enten. "Donald Trump wears out his opponents, and I think they've done that here." The poll showed that a minority of Democrats were motivated to keep opposing Trump after his victory, about 44%, but a majority said either that they were not motivated to oppose him or that they were supporting him. 46% said they were not motivated, while 10% said they would support Trump. "The bottom line is this: Republicans [are] very motivated by Donald Trump's win. And compared to eight years ago, Democrats are just really, really tired," Enten said. "They have just given up!" he concluded. Enten posted video of the segment to his social media account. Like Blaze News? Jack Smith moves to dismiss charges against Trump before Inauguration Day

On Monday, special counsel Jack Smith filed a motion to dismiss the Washington, D.C., case filed against President-elect Donald Trump.Trump was initially charged last year with four felony counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. 'Today's decision by the DOJ ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law.'Smith wrote in the motion, "As a result of the election held on November 5, 2024, the defendant, Donald J. Trump, will be inaugurated as President on January 20, 2025. It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President."Smith noted the "unprecedented situation" and, after consulting with the DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel, concluded that the "prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated.""The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed. But the circumstances have," he added.Smith led the Washington, D.C., case as well as another federal indictment against Trump out of Florida, where Trump was accused of mishandling classified documents. That case was dismissed in the summer by Judge Aileen Cannon, who ruled that Smith's appointment was unconstitutional. Smith's move to drop the Washington, D.C., case on Monday would mark the end of all the federal indictments against Trump.Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, responded to Smith's decision to file the motion to dismiss.Cheung said, "Today's decision by the DOJ ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law. The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country."Trump had previously vowed to terminate Smith "within two seconds" of taking office. The New York Times reported earlier this month that sources revealed Smith was planning to wrap up the federal cases and retire before Trump had the opportunity to remove him as special counsel.Trump is still facing a criminal conviction in the New York court system, where he was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. However, last week, Judge Juan Merchan granted the defense's request to file a motion to dismiss. Merchan will receive that motion and the prosecution's response in early December. The Georgia case lodged against Trump, also a state-level indictment, is still tied up in the court and has not gone to trial.Like Blaze News? Kamala Harris already scheming for her next office: 'I am staying in the fight'

Fresh off of a devastating loss for the Democratic Party that cost more than a billion dollars, Vice President Kamala Harris is ready to hop back on the horse, according to a Politico report. The report says that Harris has told her aides and allies to keep their options open as she considers either running for president again or running for governor of California. 'The natural thing to do would be to set up some type of entity that would give her the opportunity to travel and give speeches and preserve her political relationships.' Harris presided over the Democrats' loss of the Oval Office and the U.S. Senate and the retention of the U.S. House by Republicans. Democrats have been attacking each other to place blame for their failures and also to jockey for position in the party going forward. The report says Harris has repeated a new mantra in numerous phone calls: “I am staying in the fight.” Harris plans to reassert her leadership in the party and become a prominent voice for the opposition in Trump's second term. “She doesn’t have to decide if she wants to run for something again in the next six months,” said a former Harris aide to Politico. “The natural thing to do would be to set up some type of entity that would give her the opportunity to travel and give speeches and preserve her political relationships," the source added. Brian Brokaw, a former Harris aide, told Politico she likely hasn't made a decision and usually takes a long time to consider her options. “She is not someone who makes rash decisions," said Brokaw. "She takes, sometimes, a painfully long time to make decisions. So I would pretty much guarantee you she has no idea what her next move is." Some Democrats have blamed President Joe Biden for staying in the campaign for too long and not giving Harris a chance to solidify the party behind her, but others blame the Harris campaign for spending on lavish parties with celebrities. And finally, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called on people to blame a Jewish political group. Like Blaze News? Trump throws his support behind MAGA ally to replace Matt Gaetz

President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Jimmy Patronis, Florida's chief financial officer, to replace former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz after the Florida firebrand resigned his congressional post. Gaetz resigned from Congress shortly after Trump nominated him for attorney general, sparking a slew of online and media controversy. Less than two weeks later, Gaetz decided to withdraw his bid for attorney general so as not to further distract from the Trump transition team. Gaetz confirmed that he does not intend to return to serve in the 119th Congress, leaving the seat vacant. As a result, Patronis' name was floated as a potential Gaetz replacement. Patronis, who has long been an ally to Trump, earned his wholehearted endorsement. "Jimmy Patronis, Chief Financial Officer for the Great State of Florida, has done a tremendous job as CFO, where he also serves as the State's Fire Marshall, and as an important member of the Florida Cabinet," Trump said in a Truth Social post Monday. "I hear that Jimmy is now considering launching a Campaign for Congress in Florida's 1st Congressional District!" 'Should he decide to enter this Race, Jimmy Patronis has my Complete and Total Endorsement.'Trump pointed to Patronis' political experience as well as local ties to Florida's 1st district, further bolstering the endorsement. "A fourth generation Floridian from the beautiful Panhandle, and owner of an iconic seafood restaurant, Jimmy has been a wonderful friend to me, and to MAGA," Trump continued. "I hear that As your next Congressman, Jimmy would work tirelessly alongside of me to Grow our Economy, Secure our Border, Stop Migrant Crime, Strengthen our Incredible Military/Vets, Restore American Energy DOMINANCE, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.""Should he decide to enter this Race, Jimmy Patronis has my Complete and Total Endorsement," Trump said. "RUN, JIMMY, RUN!" Patronis responded to Trump in an X post on Monday, seemingly open to the idea of running to replace Gaetz. "Put me to work, Mr. President!" Patronis said. "I am here to serve."Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
