That’s because they’re the recipients of an uncommon genetic mutation. According to the National Deer Association, it takes two deer with the recessive gene for piebaldism to create a fawn with these striking white patches. The same genetic mutation that gives these animals their distinctive appearance sometimes comes with harmful deformities that can affect their spine, legs, and more. Some piebald fawns are born with such serious health issues that they can’t survive for very long. Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. recalls 400 pieces of 16-ounce bags of “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” dog treats on November 22 due to potential Salmonella contamination. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “The potential for contamination was noted after testing performed by a third-party laboratory identified contamination in a related yet commercially unreleased lot of the same product.” The product comes in a 16-ounce purple-and-black bag marked on the back side with lot number  20051324L2 and an expiration date of 11/13/25. The recalled products were distributed to Hollywood Feed physical stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Furthermore, they were also available through Hollywood Feed’s online store. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recalled products. The FDA is advising consumers who have purchased the recalled product to stop using them and to dispose the product properly.
