Now that the 2024 presidential election is in the rearview mirror — not to mention the fact that President-elect Donald Trump has a decisive mandate to govern along with a solid majority in the incoming Senate — media appears content to pass the time leading up to the holidays and the now inevitable Trump transition by casting doubt on every nomination and appointment he makes. A woman on social media caught the most mesmerizing footage of a piebald deer wandering into her backyard, and her video reminds us that nature is full of surprises! Not only was this an incredible sight to behold, but it was also a fairly rare one. In fact, one user in the comments section compared the odds of seeing this half-white doe to catching a glimpse of a unicorn! Although we’re pretty sure you’re more likely to see a piebald deer than a mythical creature, these animals are still hard to come by. That’s because they’re the recipients of an uncommon genetic mutation. According to the National Deer Association, it takes two deer with the recessive gene for piebaldism to create a fawn with these striking white patches. The same genetic mutation that gives these animals their distinctive appearance sometimes comes with harmful deformities that can affect their spine, legs, and more. Some piebald fawns are born with such serious health issues that they can’t survive for very long.
