Suspect In Shooting Of 2 NYPD Officers Is An Illegal Immigrant From Venezuela

Two New York City cops were shot early Monday morning by a 19-year-old Venezuelan man who illegally entered the United States last year, according to law enforcement.  Investigators said that the NYPD officers were shot by Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata after they attempted to stop him for driving a moped down the wrong side of the street when they were investigating a robbery in Queens at 1:40 a.m. After police attempted to speak with him, Castro-Mata ran away on foot and fired “multiple times” at the officers, hitting one in his bulletproof vest and the other in the leg, according to New York City Police Commissioner Eddie Caban. The officers responded, shooting Castro-Mata in the ankle.  The officers, Christopher Abreu, and Richard Yarusso, were taken to a nearby hospital where they were in stable condition. Castro-Mata was also expected to survive after having surgery on his foot. “This morning we get another reminder of everything our officers do and what they do to put themselves on the line to make sure our city is safe. Every day they go toward the danger,” Caban said at a press conference. “This could have gone a very different way.” New York Democratic Mayor Eric Adams called the incident a “senseless act of violence” and said the suspect showed a “total disregard for life.”  According to NYPD Detective Joseph Kenny, Castro-Mata illegally crossed into Eagle Pass, Texas, in July 2023. Kenny added that Castro-Mata’s current address was at a hotel that had been turned into housing for migrants.  Castro-Mata was suspected of being involved in several robberies, including one where a woman was attacked and her credit card was stolen. “We’re looking at him for several other robbery patterns in the Queens area where he does have other co-defendants,” Kenny told reporters.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association in New York City, said that his union would ensure justice is served.  “When the cameras are on, everyone is doing their job holding criminals accountable. When the cameras are off and people aren’t paying attention the criminal justice system is putting police officers and the public at risk,” he said.  New York has been flooded with illegal immigrants in recent years, with thousands being bussed in from Texas. The influx has placed a strain on city budgets, with both police and education funds being cut to help accommodate migrants.

Biden’s Number 3 At DOJ Left To Prosecute Trump In NY. A Lawsuit Seeks Insight Into The Move

A conservative watchdog group is suing the Department of Justice (DOJ) for emails that could shed light on the DOJ’s role in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s criminal prosecution of Donald Trump. Matthew Colangelo left his plum job near the top of President Joe Biden’s DOJ to work for Bragg on the Trump case in December 2022, a highly unusual move that likely would have involved discussions with other DOJ brass about his departure. That case ultimately led to the conviction of Trump, Biden’s election opponent, of 34 felonies over a minor financial matter. The DOJ did not turn over records for Colangelo’s emails and calendar entries mentioning Trump during his time at the department, so America First Legal (AFL), a nonprofit helmed by former Trump official Stephen Miller, sued on Monday. “No one leaves being the #3 at the Department of Justice to go work in a district attorney’s office–no matter which one it is. There is no plausible explanation other than engagement in a coordinated campaign to target one man – President Trump. The American people deserve to see these records,” Gene Hamilton, AFL’s executive director, said in a statement. Before serving as Acting Associate Attorney General, Colangelo worked for the New York Attorney General’s office, which also investigated Trump, the lawsuit said. A Freedom of Information Act request filed last year requested all of Colangelo’s records containing the terms Trump or FPOTUS, as well as his calendar at the DOJ. In August, the DOJ asked AFL to narrow the request, which it did, but the DOJ still did not provide the records. “The Defendant has violated the FOIA by failing to reasonably search for records,” the lawsuit said. Attorney General Merrick Garland praised Colangelo in announcing his departure from the federal government, saying he relied on his “wise counsel.” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said in a statement that the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government has asked Bragg and Colangelo to testify before Congress about the prosecution of Trump, adding that “it will take more than hearings — the GOP must radically constrain the power of government — by cutting spending used to fund this tyranny, firing bureaucrats, and legally holding people accountable.” Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) called Colangelo a “plausible coconspirator” in illegally depriving Trump of rights. AFL recently represented The Daily Wire in a similar lawsuit against the DOJ, in which the department initially declined to release records that, it turned out, showed that the Department was lumping in the center-right parents group Moms for Liberty with the KKK, the Oath Keepers, and hate crimes.

Maya Hawke Admits She Was Cast In Tarantino Film For ‘Nepotistic Reasons’

Actress Maya Hawke, daughter of A-list film stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, admitted she was cast in the 2019 Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood” because of her famous parents. The 25-year-old star previously faced backlash for making it sound as though the role was earned through merit. Hawke clarified those statements during a new interview with The Times of London. “I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned,” she told the outlet. “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”  She said filmmaker Tarantino was trying to “cast a lot of young Hollywood,” which in this case included Margaret Qualley (Andie MacDowell’s daughter) and Rumer Willis (Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ daughter).  When asked if she believed she “deserved” the part, Hawke replied,“‘Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone. I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job, and go to open casting roles.” The actress added, “It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.” Hawke became a household name while playing Robin Buckley in the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things.” She also had roles in “Do Revenge,” “Asteroid City,” and “Maestro.” The actress also spoke on the topic while promoting “Wildcat,” the Flannery O’Connor biopic her father directed. “I had moments of insecurity about it while we were shooting the movie,” she told Variety in September. ”But the internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances. My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.” Her dad, a four-time Academy Award winner, also chimed in on the topic: “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re onstage.”

USA Today May Have Violated Own Ethical Standards In Deleting Op-Ed From Republican Senator Over ‘Loaded Language’

USA Today May Have Violated Own Ethical Standards In Deleting Op-Ed From Republican Senator Over ‘Loaded Language’

USA Today may have violated its own ethical standards by deleting an op-ed about protecting women’s sports by Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) without his knowledge or explanation to the public.  While USA Today promises to provide its readers with “transparency” about its journalistic processes it left its audience and Kennedy guessing for days as to why it deleted an opinion article written by the Republican senator on keeping males out of female sports.  The op-ed, titled “Is transgender inclusion more important than women’s sports?” was published on May 11 but was deleted from the USA Today Network newspapers by May 14. In the op-ed, Kennedy argued that it was harmful to girls for males identifying as female to be allowed to compete in women’s sports.  For the first 10 days after deleting Kennedy’s article, audiences were led to believe there had been a technical error. However, after Fox News reached out to inquire about the deletion, USA Today added a note to a link to the article saying it had not met its editorial standards. The delay in explaining what was going on to USA Today readers and Kennedy appears to fly in the face of one of USA Today’s ethical guidelines, which says that the outlet “will explain to audiences our journalistic processes to promote transparency and engagement.” Kennedy says the newspaper acted anything but transparently. “One of America’s largest outlets censored a common sense position that an overwhelming majority of Americans and Louisianians hold,” a spokesperson for Kennedy told The Daily Wire. “And they tried to hide the fact that they squelched it. It took the USA Today network well over a week to admit to the public that they had secretly removed the senator’s piece, which raises a lot of questions about some mainstream media’s willingness to be transparent with American readers.” Initially, the op-ed was published by eight Louisiana newspapers owned by USA Today without any requests to Kennedy for edits. It was then removed, with no opportunity for Kennedy to make changes, and without his knowledge. After discovering it had been removed, Kennedy’s team attempted to understand why the article had been deleted.  Emails and phone calls show that the process behind the removal was anything but transparent.   Kennedy’s team was first told that the op-ed had been removed because it hadn’t included any links to citations despite the fact that the version submitted by Kennedy had over a dozen citations.  After corresponding with one local reporter who they had submitted the op-ed to the paper through, a spokesperson made contact with Misty Castile, the editor of the Shreveport Times and four other Gannett papers. The spokesperson spoke with Castile twice on May 20, six days after the deletion of the article.  In the first phone call, Castile told a Kennedy team member that the op-ed had been removed because it had no citations. She also said that a “process problem” was what led to the op-ed being pulled without Kennedy’s knowledge, according to a transcript of the call shared with The Daily Wire.  In a second phone call, Castile added that there were concerns about language used in the op-ed, adding that she was waiting to hear from others about more specific problems.  “You know, I do know there were some specific questions about language, and, and part of the reason that we’re talking to standards is I’m trying to get very specific information on what language they were discussing—if it was just that they didn’t see citations, and, so, without the citations it, it, it was, it looked worse on the face that it was—I’m waiting on answers,” she said.  Later emails from Castile stated that Kennedy’s use of the terms “biological male,” and “biological female,” were “loaded terms” outside of the outlet’s editorial standards. The outlet also took issue with Kennedy saying that men competing against women in sports was similar to NBA star Zion Williamson playing against middle school boys. Two newspapers that ran the article, including the Houma Today and the Daily Advertiser, both still have the op-ed promoted on their X pages though the links to the article go to the editorial standards explanation.   USA Today did not return a request for comment.
