The last of the three thugs who incinerated two sleeping Denver children and three adults in August 2020 has pleaded guilty to murdering them. Kevin Bui, Dillon Siebert, and Gavin Seymour donned full hockey-style face masks and hoodies on Aug. 5, 2020, then set out to execute a monstrous revenge scheme over Bui's stolen iPhone. Bui, now 20, used the "Find my iPhone" app to track his phone to a Denver neighborhood. He and his teenage gang targeted the wrong house, broke in, splashed gasoline onto the walls, then set the place on fire. — (@) Eight people were sleeping inside the house at 5312 North Truckee Street at the time. Three managed to leap out windows, breaking bones but escaping the flames. Djibril Diol, his wife, Adja, and their 3-year-old daughter Kadidia were not so lucky. Hassan Diol and her infant daughter Hawa Beye were similarly burned alive. Denver Police officer Gordon King, first on the scene, heard someone on the inside attempting to unlock the front door. According to the arrest warrant for Seymour, "King kicked in the front door but was forced away from the door by the extreme heat," reported the Daily Mail. "As Officer King attempted to get the person out it was apparent that the person was not alive, and Officer King was forced back by the extreme heat of the fire," said the warrant. KMGH-TV reported that firefighters desperately tried to save the Sengelese family from the "very significant fire," but it was too late. The victims' bodies were ultimately found huddled together on the first floor. The Denver Police Department circulated security footage stills of the suspects and their getaway vehicle and offered a $14,000 reward for information about the deadly attack. Authorities later increased the reward for information to $50,000. Police arrested the trio in January 2021 and slapped them with scores of charges, including five counts of murder with extreme indifference in the first degree; three counts of criminal attempted murder in the first degree; two counts of first-degree assault; one count of first-degree burglary; three counts of first-degree arson; and eight counts of fourth degree arson. Bui and Seymour, both 16 at the time of their arrests, were charged as adults, and each faced 60 counts. Siebert, 14 at the time, was charged with 47 counts. Investigators determined that the teens had searched the victims' house on Google multiple times prior to the attack and that Bui had purchased the masks seen in the surveillance footage at a Party City close to where he lived. Snapchat conversations accessed by investigators revealed the retributive nature of the scheme. "The [are going to] get theirs like I got mine," Bui wrote to Seymour. Although the victims' families wanted to see Bui locked up for life without the possibility of parole, he managed to swing a plea deal with the Denver District Attorney's Office last week. Bui agreed to plead guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and face up to 60 years in a state prison in exchange for the Democratic DA dropping an additional 60 criminal charges. The Associated Press indicated that the other two murderers got off relatively lightly. Siebert was sentenced to three years in juvenile detention and seven years in a state prison program for young offenders. Seymour was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of second-degree murder. Amadou Beye, whose wife and infant daughter perished in the blaze, addressed Seymour in court, telling him in March, "I hope when you die you will die slow and hard," reported the Daily Mail. "And you will die young. And when you die, I hope you will feel all the pain they did feel when they were dying. And you will feel all the pain that we feel right now," added Beye. A group of 130 Republican lawmakers sent a letter on Friday to the United States Department of Education demanding the Biden administration reverse its federal student loan "forgiveness" plan that requires American taxpayers to foot the bill for student borrowers.An April report from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that the administration's sweeping debt cancellations could add up to $750 billion to the national deficit. Last year, the Supreme Court rejected the administration's attempt to unilaterally zero out federal student loan debt for borrowers. Since then, the White House has rolled out multiple smaller but similar programs through its Saving on a Valuable Education Plan, a new income-driven repayment plan that sets monthly payments based on borrowers' income.'Backdoor attempt to enact 'free' college.'In a letter to Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Republican lawmakers wrote, "The latest Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) proposed by your Department of Education (Department) on April 17, 2024, represents the latest in a string of reckless attempts to transfer as much as $1 trillion of student loan debt from those who willingly borrowed to those who did not or have already repaid their loans."The proposed NPRM mentioned in the letter refers to a recent White House proposal "to provide targeted debt relief" by "modify[ing] the Department's existing debt collection regulations to provide greater specificity regarding certain non-exhaustive situations in which the Secretary may exercise discretion to waive all or part of any debts owed to the Department," according to a Federal Register filing. The rule would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965."We strongly urge you to withdraw it," the Republicans' letter read. "The Biden administration describes this regulation as 'targeted relief,' yet the Department's own estimates show the opposite. This is even broader than the Department's first attempt: at an estimated price tag of $147 billion, taxpayers are being forced to take on the debt of nearly 28 million borrowers," the letter continued. "Moreover, while the Department likely does not wish to highlight how much their proposal would help the wealthy, outside estimates show that borrowers eligible for 'relief' under certain provisions in this proposal will have a typical income of over $300,000."Republicans, led by House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), called the proposal "fiscally irresponsible" and a "backdoor attempt to enact 'free' college." The lawmakers accused the administration of "us[ing] borrowers as political pawns knowing full well these proposed actions are illegal."Lawmakers contended that the Supreme Court had already ruled the White House's "Plan A" debt write-off unconstitutional. The administration's new strategy, "Plan B," is "almost double the cost of 'Plan A,'" they wrote. "'Plan B' hinges on creating these extensive regulations based on scant statutory text written in 1965," the letter explained. "It is certain that drafters in 1965 through the last reauthorization in 2008, did not contemplate that these words would be used to cancel massive portions of student loan balances. Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith again criticized the removal of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs from universities, claiming the programs are being removed out of spite.The running back added to comments he made in March 2024, calling out the University of Florida specifically for removing DEI programs. Having played at the university himself, Smith took issue with the lack of payment he got in a time before NIL payments have made so many college athletes into high-income earners."Bro, I want my reparations right now from the University of Florida," Smith told USA Today. "I want to send their [expletive] a bill. I want interest on mine. Because I know one thing: When I was in that stadium – and I hate to talk about myself, but the system has forced me to talk about it because we couldn't get NIL [payments] – running up and down that field with Cedric Smith leading the way with my great offensive linemen blocking for me, when you looked up in those stands you saw a whole lot of E. They're trying to get rid of something that was a pipeline to opening up the opportunities, even for small and minority businesses."The football star rounded out his comments with remarks about needing representation of certain skin colors in order to feel welcomed."They really don't have their best interest at heart. Tucker Carlson is not launching a show on Russian-state television.On Tuesday, Newsweek published a story claiming that Carlson had launched a show on Russia 24, a state-controlled Russian media outlet. Newsweek cited a newspaper owned and controlled by the Russian government as its source.'It's all fake obviously, like most stories in American news media.'"Tucker Carlson launches show on Russian state TV," Newsweek wrote on X.The story quickly spread online, leading to accusations that Carlson is now "quite literally, a mouthpiece of the Russian state" and that Carlson "has now embraced his master," a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin. But it's not true: Carlson has not launched a show with Russia 24. "That Newsweek story is totally false," Dean Thompson, head of programming and production operations at the Tucker Carlson Network, told Blaze News. What is true is that Russia 24 is airing old episodes of Carlson's show that include Russian translation. Thompson explained that "use of our content by that channel is without legal permission." Neil Patel, CEO of the Tucker Carlson Network, added in a statement: The Tucker Carlson Network has not done any deals with state media in any country. Whoever is currently pretending to be the old Newsweek brand would know that if they had checked with us before printing like news companies are supposed to do. Carlson, meanwhile, said, "It's all fake obviously, like most stories in American news media. Of course I have no partnership with Russia. The first I'd heard anything about this was (this) morning." This is the second time that Newsweek has tried to connect Carlson to Russian-state TV. The outlet published a story last September suggesting Carlson had partnered with Russian-state TV. It was not true then, and it's not true now. The false claim appears to have originated from Ukraine’s Institute of Mass Information and Ukraine Pravda. It's not clear why the media keep pushing an already-debunked story to smear Carlson.
