It’s the off-season, but Kansas City Chiefs star kicker Harrison Butker is playing defense now. Giving a commencement address at a Catholic college last weekend, the three-time Super Bowl champion praised his wife, Isabelle, a stay-at-home mom, and warned the women graduating of “diabolical lies” regarding whether career success would make them happier than motherhood. “All of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker,” Butker told graduates at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. “She’s a primary educator to our children. She’s the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and father.” “I say all of this to you because I’ve seen it firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God’s will in their life,” he added. “Isabelle’s dream of having a career might not have come true. But if you ask her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud without hesitation and say, ‘Heck, no.’” Cue a media meltdown more appropriate for oh, a commencement speaker suggesting that graduates pursue a career in terrorism. “Chiefs’ Harrison Butker blasted for commencement speech encouraging women to be homemakers,” blared NBC News. “Chiefs’ Harrison Butker Criticized for Graduation Speech Attacking Working Women While Quoting Taylor Swift,” wrote People. “It’s demeaning to women to imply that their choices outside of wife and motherhood pale in comparison to that of a homemaker,” former California first lady and journalist Maria Shriver posted on X. Even the NFL, apparently no longer as devoted to promoting freedom of conscience as the league was during the Colin Kaepernick kneeling era, distanced itself from Butker—who also made waves with his criticism of Pride Month, in vitro fertilization, and the “tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion” during his speech. “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” Jonathan Beane, an NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. According to a 2019 Gallup poll, 50% of women with minor children said they would prefer to be a homemaker, while 45% said they’d prefer to work outside the home. In other words, it’s Butker, not his critics, who represent the most popular view among women with younger children. If I’m blessed with children, I honestly don’t know if I’ll continue working, whether part time or full time, or choose to stay at home. But I’m sick of this idea that it’s wrong to say that some women, and maybe even most women, would be happier staying at home with their children. Among my mom, my sister, and friends, I’ve seen many women find genuine fulfillment and joy in staying home with their children, even as they face very real sacrifices because of it. (Ask a stay-at-home mom how often she longs for adult conversation, or how she feels about the ten-thousandth time she’s dealt with a toddler meltdown.) Of course, being a stay at home mom—or dad—just isn’t on the table for many American families struggling to pay the bills, even on two salaries. Molla, a pediatrician who continued practicing even as she raised her children, was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2004. When Molla was pregnant with her fourth child, doctors discovered a tumor. Despite the risk to her own health, she proceeded with the pregnancy and died a week after delivering Gianna Emanuela Molla, who became a doctor herself. Catholicism is certainly not opposed to women working. In a 1995 letter to women, John Paul II, now a saint himself, wrote: “Thank you, women who work! You are present and active in every area of life-social, economic, cultural, artistic and political.” “In this way you make an indispensable contribution to the growth of a culture which unites reason and feeling, to a model of life ever open to the sense of ‘mystery,’ to the establishment of economic and political structures ever more worthy of humanity,” John Paul II added. Ultimately, were Butker to have asked me for my advice regarding his speech, I would have recommended he honor many women’s genuine desire for both careers and to be stay-at-home moms by talking about changing the corporate culture to better accommodate women who take off years or decades to be stay-at-home moms. I would have also loved Butker to talk not just about the scourge of fatherlessness but the need for good dads who push back on bosses and corporations with excessive demands and prioritize their children over worldly success. He’s drawing widespread ire because he advocated a viewpoint that goes against our elites’ mentality, because he pushed back against the worldly idea that career success is what matters most, not our relationships and time with our loved ones. He’s drawing hate because, despite women’s happiness declining over the past 50 years, corporate America doesn’t want to hear that many moms would be happier if they could stay at home with their kids, or if their jobs were more accommodating to prioritizing family. He’s drawing criticism because, at a time when we urge our kids to pursue personal goals and success, he’s saying that it’s Jesus Christ who is the king, that sometimes the path of sacrifice and little to no recognition is the better one. That’s not a popular message in 2024 (nor was it in 33 A.D., for that matter). But it’s a message that deserves a serious hearing. We are not living in some era where men and women are fulfilled and happy, and children are thriving. We’re instead living in a time where violence is increasing, where mental health is in decline, where suicide rates are going up, and where addiction—whether to marijuana, harder drugs, food, porn, or alcohol—is affecting far too many. Maybe, just maybe, that’s a sign we’re not OK in our current way of life. I don’t agree with every word Butker said in his speech. But he’s sure making the right enemies—and he deserves a serious response, not censorship and unthinking criticism. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is campaigning to get reelected (by the next European Parliament, EP) and her messaging ahead of EP elections next month unsurprisingly includes doubling down on the policy of “combating disinformation.” But in the same breath, the EU bureaucrat was not shy to make unsubstantiated accusations against some European politicians – specifically the opposition in her native Germany, that’s rapidly gaining in popularity – describing them as being “in the pockets of Russia.” She also pledged that the European Commission under her continued leadership will make “European Democracy Shield” a priority. This is supposed to be a new body coordinating EU member-countries’ national agencies as they search for “information and manipulation.” “Better information and threat intelligence sharing” is given as the entity’s key role, while it will be modeled after  Sweden’s Psychological Defense Agency. Von der Leyen proceeded to show a poor understanding of the concepts of misinformation, cyber attacks, and extremism, conflating them while warning of foreign influence and manipulation. “It is about confusing people so they don’t know who to believe or if they can even believe anyone at all” – she said, although her own statements can be read as achieving just that effect. The European Commission president went on to praise the Digital Services Act, a controversial censorship law, and spoke about the need for the bloc to be “very vigilant and uncompromising when it comes to ensuring that it is properly enforced.” “We have already made progress with the DSA…so once we have detected malign information or propaganda, we need to ensure that it is swiftly removed and blocked,” von der Leyen said. US Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Chris Wray have spoken about their departments’ plans regarding what they refer to as election threats. The plans were laid out during a meeting of a Department of Justice (DoJ) outfit called Election Threats Task Force, which was set up in 2021, shortly after the previous presidential election. Critics of the Biden White House – particularly the way it handles opponents and their right to free speech, often “in collaboration” with Big Tech – are suspicious about the timing of the announced measures. This has to do with both the fact that the next election is less than six months away and that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Intelligence Experts Group has just been disbanded as a result of a lawsuit brought by America First Legal non-profit and Ambassador Richard Grenell. Executive Director of the Foundation For Freedom Online Mike Benz has explained whatever is branded as a misinformation narrative is also considered to be the result of a campaign – and so “any US civilian who clicks the retweet button to amplify said narrative is deemed to be participating in said ‘campaign’.” Benz also identified the period ahead of the 2020 presidential ballot as the time when the US for the first time set up “a permanent domestic censorship office parked at CISA” – the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, a part of the DHS. He also accused the DHS of teaming up with the FBI ahead of those elections, to create “a series of cutouts in the private sector and the academic worlds to serve as the attack dogs for DHS content, for social media content DHS wanted taken down.” It doesn’t serve to reassure the current administration’s political opponents that Garland has made a name for himself in the past by going after former President Donald Trump, who will square off with Biden in November. When Garland and Wray talk about countering election threats, they frame it as an effort aimed solely at dealing with foreign “malign influence” and “cyber campaigns”; however, these declarative targets have often in the past provided a smokescreen for agencies like the FBI to flag (and get censored) “disfavored” online speech of Americans. NBC Nightly News ran a segment celebrating the Missouri Democrats who held a more than 50 hour marathon filibuster trying to block a bill that would restrict abortion. The outlet praised the “supporters of abortion rights” who wanted to “protect” a woman’s “right” to kill her kid. Presently in Missouri, Republicans are trying to pass a bill that would make it more challenging to amend the Missouri constitution. Democrats are fighting for the option to amend the state constitution, in order to eventually include abortion until fetal viability. NBC Nightly News loved this idea.   “Tonight, Democrats are fighting back,” against “one of the strictest” bans on abortion in the country, NBC News Washington Correspondent, Yamiche Alcindor said.  “Supporters of abortion rights say they’ve gathered enough signatures for a separate ballot measure in November that would protect access to abortions,” Alcindor said excitedly. “But if the Republican proposal is passed before November,” she added, “enacting the abortion amendment would not just require a simple statewide majority but also majorities from five of the state’s eight districts,” making it harder to pass certain things, especially for Democrats, given that Missouri is traditionally more red. NBC Nightly then played a clip from State Senator Lauren Arthur (D-Mo.) who said, “The reason Republicans are so committed to silencing people’s voices at the ballot box is because they’re afraid that Missourians are going to come out in support of restoring their reproductive rights and their access to abortion in Missouri." It’s extremely obvious which side of this debate NBC Nightly stands on with this puff piece. It’s just a shame that it's the side that celebrates and advocates for more baby death.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle once again assumed the role of President Biden’s top defender on Wednesday’s edition of The 11th Hour as she interviewed Utah Sen. Mitt Romney. The former GOP nominee did not exactly prove to be a hostile interview, but Ruhle still didn’t appreciate him condemning Biden’s record on the border or refusal to affirm that Biden is simply the greatest. Ruhle wondered, “President Biden ran as a bipartisan president. He’s worked with you on a number of things and gotten a lot done. The infrastructure law, the CHIPS Act, lowered healthcare costs, the list goes on, but the country remains polarized and getting more divided. If he would have a second term, do you think there is something he could do to actually bring people back together? Because he's got a lot of policies under his belt that he has done for the country, and work with you.”     Romney could’ve pointed out that this supposedly great unifier once told a black audience that he was going to put them back in chains, but he didn’t. Instead, he simply declared that there is more to unifying people than giving speeches, leading Ruhle to complain, “But President Biden isn't just giving a good speech, infrastructure law is now the law. The CHIPS Act is bringing jobs back, is bringing manufacturing back. Those aren't speeches, those are policies.” Romney replied by citing two big areas where Biden has failed, “Number one, the fact that things cost more than they did before. Inflation is still there. People somehow think the prices are going to go down. No, when you beat inflation, prices don’t go down, that would be deflation, they just stabilize, and they’re getting stabilized, but the fact that people are paying more is a real concern to them.” The second is “the border. Look, people have been screaming about the border for all three-and-a-half years Joe Biden has been president and he has not done anything to solve the problem at the border. That’s a huge issue for President Trump. I can't understand why President Biden didn't tackle this from the very beginning.” That didn’t sit well with Ruhle, “What has Congress done? Because it's Congress who sets the laws.” Romney recalled, “Well, the Republicans have put forward our plan. The House put out a border plan, and that’s what Congress did. The president said no, that wasn't acceptable. Then they began working on a bipartisan basis. But you know what? This was not a problem when President Trump was president. The reality is—” Ruhle interrupted to try to argue that Trump is actually the reason the border is such a mess, “The border has been a problem for years, sir, and a plan was just put together and it was Donald Trump, who is not currently in office, who blocked it.” While not countering Ruhle’s assessment that Trump blocked the bipartisan bill a few months ago, Romney reiterated that the border is still worse under Biden than it was under Trump, “Yeah, he blocked the plan, in part, I'm sure, because he wants to keep this issue hot and alive for his election, but don't forget, when he was president, he did a lot of things that sounded really ugly, but we didn't have anywhere near the number of people that have come into the country illegally as we have under President Biden and that is something he should have done everything in his power.” For Stephanie Ruhle, nothing is Joe Biden's fault, it's either Republicans or some foreign power that wants to elect Republicans that are to blame for the country's woes.
