Two approaches to improving the amount of charge that capacitors can store look to be bearing fruit, based on simultaneous publications by unconnected teams. Each offers the potential to make supercapacitors more potent energy storage devices, and perhaps put them into the race for large-scale energy storage.Supercapacitors have long had an advantage over batteries in their ability to release stored charge very quickly. However, even the best supercapacitors haven’t been able to hold enough charge to meet society’s biggest need. Occasional breakthroughs have made supercapacitors look like contenders for that market, but the dramatic fall in the price of lithium-ion batteries has left little room for competitors. That might be about to change.Two papers published in the same edition of Science last month both explore big improvements in capacitance, although whether either can scale up remains to be seen.All capacitors share the same basic principle. Positive and negative charges are separated and stored with a material in between to prevent anything leaping the gap. Closure of a switch allows the negative charges to flow around to meet the positive ones, creating electric current, with all its applications.There are now hundreds of capacitors in a single laptop or smartphone. One look at a phone reveals how tiny they must be. As such, the charge they can store is orders of magnitude too low to drive a car, let alone power a city through the night.Supercapacitors, as their name suggests, have much more capacitance. They’ve made regenerative braking possible, but even scaled-up-versions currently can’t compete with batteries for long-distance driving. For that to change, the capacitance needs to increase, which means finding materials that will cheaply prevent extremely large amounts of charge from recombining.Ferroelectric materials like BaTiO3 are widely used in capacitors but suffer from a problem known as remnant polarization, where some charge remains behind rather than being released. Their crystals also deteriorate with use.By sandwiching a 3D structure between 2D crystals, a team at Korean and American institutions reduced remnant polarization and report being able to store 191.7 joules per cubic centimeter of capacitor, and release it with more than 90 percent efficiency. Existing commercial counterparts store about 10 joules per cubic centimeter.“We created a new structure based on the innovations we’ve already made in my lab involving 2D materials,” Dr Sang-Hoon Bae of Washington University in St Louis said in a statement. “Initially, we weren’t focused on energy storage, but during our exploration of material properties, we found a new physical phenomenon that we realized could be applied to energy storage, and that was both very interesting and potentially much more useful.”Bae and co-authors’ report on the work only describes testing the capacitor over 10 cycles, indicating a long way to go before commercial application. “We’re not yet 100 percent optimal, but already we’re outperforming what other labs are doing,” Bae said. “Our next steps will be to make this material structure even better, so we can meet the need for ultrafast charging and discharging and very high energy densities in capacitors. We must be able to do that without losing storage capacity over repeated charges to see this material used broadly in large electronics, like electric vehicles, and other developing green technologies.”In the same edition of Science, Cambridge University scientists describe results overturning ideas on how to make supercapacitors with carbon electrodes store more power. “Pore size has long been considered the main lever to improve capacitance,” They note. However, comparisons between commercial carbons with nanometer-scale pores found little correlation between size and capacitance. What does matter, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals, is the amount of structural disorder in the capacitors’ domains.“More disordered carbons with smaller graphene-like domains show higher capacitances owing to the more efficient storage of ions in their nanopores,” the authors write. “We propose that for carbons with smaller domains, the charges are more localized, giving rise to stronger interactions between ions and carbon atoms, thus leading to more efficient storage of ions.”The paper does not discuss how much capacitance can be achieved if carbon domains are made sufficiently disordered, although it runs against the grain to try to make electronic devices more disordered, rather than ordered. Both papers are published in Science, Bae’s ferroelectric work here, and the disordered carbon work here.

Silicon is the cornerstone of computing. Its properties and abundance have made it so. You are reading this on a device that uses silicon chips. Quantum computers are the next giant leap in computing, capable of doing calculations that not even our most powerful supercomputers can do. And they might still based on silicon, but with a twist: it may need to be of a level of purity that has not been achieved before. Humans can now produce such silicon.The issue at hand is that silicon is commonly found in three forms in nature: silicon-28, silicon-29, and silicon-30. These are known as isotopes. Silicon-28 has 14 protons and 14 neutrons in its nucleus and is the more common type, making up over 92.2 percent of all silicon found in nature. The other two have respectively one and two extra neutrons and constitute 4.7 percent and 3.1 percent of natural silicon.The presence of silicon-29 and 30 in computer chips is no big deal. But things are different for quantum computing. It all boils down to the coherence of quantum bits or qubits. That’s the ability of quantum computers to stay error-free. Qubits are very susceptible to the environment so they are usually operated near absolute zero.It turns out that the extra neutron in silicon-29 is enough to mess with coherence, creating errors in the quantum chip. By shooting a beam of silicon-28 atoms at a chip, a research team was able to reduce the presence of silicon-29 from 4.5 percent to two parts per million (0.0002 percent).“Electronic chips currently within an everyday computer consist of billions of transistors – these can also be used to create qubits for silicon-based quantum devices. The ability to create high quality silicon qubits has in part been limited to date by the purity of the silicon starting material used. The breakthrough purity we show here solves this problem," lead author Ravi Acharya, a joint University of Manchester/University of Melbourne Cookson Scholar, said in a statement.“Others are experimenting with alternatives, but we believe silicon is the leading candidate for quantum computer chips that will enable the enduring coherence required for reliable quantum calculations,” Professor David Jamieson, from the University of Melbourne, added.                 Some quantum computers have been working with 1,000 qubits, but quantum coherence was only sustained for milliseconds so their potential has remained limited. Less pure silicon was previously used to keep coherence going for 30 seconds for a single qubit, a record that has not been broken yet.“Now that we can produce extremely pure silicon-28, our next step will be to demonstrate that we can sustain quantum coherence for many qubits simultaneously. A reliable quantum computer with just 30 qubits would exceed the power of today's supercomputers for some applications,” Jamieson explained.The study is published in Communications Materials.

An invasive river monster has become a big problem for native wildlife in parts of the US and Canda. As mostly nocturnal hunters, they feed at night and go in search of live prey – but as they travel further from their native waters, they’re munching on all kinds of living things that conservations would rather they didn’t.The Mississippi and Gulf drainages are their native waters, but since the 1950s, they’ve been introduced by anglers across the western US, making their way into systems that drain along the Atlantic Coast. In 2023, The Office of Governor Wes Moore (Maryland) announced that Moore was calling on the federal government to declare the expanding population of invasive fish species — including flathead catfish —to be “an ongoing commercial fishery disaster in the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay”.Why? Because they just eat so damn much.“They are going to be one of the apex predators around every system once they establish those populations,” The Telegraph of Macon reports Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division biologist Joel Fleming told McClatchy News. “If they can fit it in their mouth, they’re going to eat it.”One of the drivers for their ongoing spread is the fecundity of some of the females who – depending on their size – can on average lay 100,000 eggs at a time. Those eggs will be protected by the male until they hatch just over a week later, and the offspring will begin eating their first live fish once they reach around 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length.As the catfish grows so too does its appetite, and they can go on munching their way through native wildlife for around 30 years. Their potential to cause harm to native ecosystems has meant that wildlife officials now encourage anglers to report any flathead catfish they catch, and – crucially – not release them back into the wild.As for what to do with the invasive river monsters caught? Provided the water is clean, they are an excellent food source, and the invasivore diet is a delicious way out of a crisis.

Axios White House reporter Alex Thompson flagged on Monday former Biden White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s new memoir Say More will have an altered passage in future printings following the revelation that it falsely claimed President Biden never looked at his watch during the August 29, 2021, dignified transfer of remains for the 13 Americans murdered in Kabul during the U.S.’s disastrous retreat from Afghanistan. Thompson highlighted the key passage in which she claimed Biden has been a victim of “misinformation” aimed to make “him appear insensitive” when, in her (alternate) reality, “the president looked at his watch only after the ceremony had ended. Moments later, he and the First Lady headed toward their car.” Of course, it flew in the face of live footage from the scene and professional photographers. Psaki quoted friendly media with a (fake) fact-check via USA Today, but she couldn’t even get that right as she attributed it to The Washington Post. Thompson also noted that Psaki’s claim “contradict[s] news photos and firsthand accounts of Gold Star families” At the time, our Nick Fondacaro torched these partisan tools for “drag[ging] those grieving families through the mud” by downplaying what they had seen with their own eyes. Bill McGuire, a professor emeritus of earth sciences at University College London and co-director of the New Weather Institute, has long been a climate alarmist. McGuire, whose specialty appears to be volcanoes, contributed to the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2012 report; scaremongered about the weather on numerous BBC Radio 4 series; wrote a book 16 years ago entitled "Seven Years to Save the Planet"; and now criticizes affordable energy in the pages of the Guardian. In March, McGuire recommended that Britons "green our towns and cities"; "replac[e] tarmac and concrete with more permeable materials"; "insulate, insulate, insulate"; and paint buildings white. On Friday, the volcanist went farther, recommending against laughing off climate alarmists' prophesies. It appears McGuire understands his proposals to be foolhardy — that more is needed than white paint and stoicism to save the world from imagined future harms. Culling the herd McGuire noted Saturday in since-deleted tweet, "If I am brutally honest, the only realistic way I see emissions falling as fast as they need to, to avoid catastrophic #climate breakdown, is the culling of the human population by a pandemic with a very high fatality rate." McGuire's "realistic" solution sounds like the yet-to-be-released COVID-19 sequel that fellow alarmists, such as Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, have warned about in recent months. At a World Economic Forum event in January, Ghebreyesus discussed Disease X and said, "Anything happening is a matter of when, not if." The WEF suggested that "Disease X" could "result in 20 times more fatalities than the coronavirus pandemic," reported Newsweek. McGuire appeared to have an idea of what virus might do the trick, having linked in his "culling" tweet to a Saturday article in the Guardian about the H5N1 strain of influenza, commonly referred to as the bird flu. The thrust of the linked article was that the bird flu being examined by British scientists might ultimately leap into human beings. Virologist Paul Digard of the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh is quoted in the artlce as saying, "Now that it seems to be fairly widespread in the cow population in the U.S., that’s a much more direct route where it could transmit to people and gain the adaptations it needs to go pandemic." The article noted further as if to reassure, "If H5N1 did start spreading among people, the good news is that the world has plenty of recent experience when it comes to rolling out large-scale vaccination programmes. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are two candidate vaccines against a related strain of flu viruses that could be shipped within weeks, if necessary." Backpedaling McGuire's suggestion — that the "only realistic way" to get down emissions to desirable levels would be the deaths of millions if not billions of human beings — was not well received. He evidently decided that the way forwad would be to accuse his critics of illiteracy and a collective failure of comprehension. "I SAID 'THE ONLY WAY I SEE EMISSIONS FALLING AS FAST AS THEY NEED TO,'" McGuire wrote in a subsequent tweet. "SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE CAN'T READ. I SAID 'THE ONLY WAY I SEE EMISSIONS FALLING AS FAST AS THEY NEED TO...' I DID NOT SAY 'WE NEED A PANDEMIC,'" wrote McGuire. "FFS DON'T READ THINGS INTO A STATEMENT THAT AREN'T THERE[.] I COULD HAVE SAD SOCIETY-BUSTING ASTEROID IMPACT INSTEAD OF PANDEMIC." The House Homeland Security Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability plans to investigate the surge of Chinese nationals illegally crossing the border after the Biden administration relaxed the vetting process, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported.According to Customs and Border Protection reporting, in the first six months of fiscal year 2024, border agents nationwide encountered 42,000 Chinese nationals compared to 18,000 during the same period the previous fiscal year.The committee will hold a hearing on Thursday to discuss the approximately 8,000% increase in Chinese illegal immigration in the United States since March 2021, a spokesperson for the committee told the DCNF.'We have no idea who they are, why they're here, and what their history is.'U.S. Representative Dan Bishop (R-North Carolina), chair of the subcommittee, told the news outlet that a "wide-open border presents a ripe opportunity for the [Chinese Communist Party] to undermine our national security.""This dramatic surge calls for intense scrutiny — especially as Border Patrol agents have been instructed to decrease vetting for Chinese nationals in order to process them into the country faster," Bishop stated. "As the CCP continues its quest for geopolitical dominance and threatens our sovereignty, we must examine the risks presented by releasing ever-increasing numbers of minimally vetted Chinese nationals into our communities."Todd Bensman, a senior national fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, is one of three experts expected to testify during Thursday's hearing. Bensman told the DCNF that the administration's policies have "created pitch-perfect conditions" for "the infiltration of Chinese agents of espionage." During his testimony, Bensman is expected to share photographs of identification cards and passports abandoned by Chinese nationals before crossing the border illegally. Bill Wells, the mayor of El Cajon, California, recently shared a video on X showing hundreds of discarded and torn IDs found near the San Diego border. As one of the best handheld gaming PCs, the ROG Ally was always going to make headlines when a new model was announced. Granted, Asus perhaps hoped for a stronger reaction to the ROG Ally X when it first unveiled the new device, but its reveal left much to be desired.
