Kamala Paid Closer To $2.5 Million For Oprah Sit Down, Report Shows

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign didn’t pay $1 million dollars for that star-studded Oprah Winfrey interview, but closer to $2.5 million for the sit down, a new report shows. Two people with knowledge told the New York Times that Winfrey’s company Harpo Productions was paid nearly $2.5 million for the September Harris town hall which saw host Oprah joined by such stars as Meryl Streep,  When the initial report came out that the Harris camp had paid Harpo Productions $1 million for the town hall event, Winfrey hit back and said she did not get any personal payment from the VP’s team. The former TV talk show host claimed that the money went to pay her production team, the New York Post noted. “I was not paid a dime,” Winfrey wrote on Instagram. “For the live-streaming event in September, my production company Harpo was asked to bring in set design, lights, cameras, crew, producers and every other item necessary (including the benches and the chairs we sat on) to put on a live production. I did not take any personal fee.” “However, the people who worked on that production needed to be paid,” she added. “And were. End of story.” A former advisor for Harris’ also said they never paid any celebrity for their support, after a report surfaced showing Winfrey was part of a host of stars who got paid big bucks for their appearances with Harris on the campaign trail. The spending decisions are documented in the Federal Elections Commission records, the Times noted. Harris’ campaign also decided to host several star-studded concerts in various swing states on the eve of the election with stars like Lady Gaga, Jon Bon Jovi, James Taylor, and Katy Perry. Officials made it clear that while the stars didn’t actually get personally paid for their support of the Democratic nominee, their support staff did get paid, with the tally for the rallies before the election coming to more than $10 million, the Times noted. During Harris’ 15 weeks on the campaign trail, the VP spent $1.5 billion, far surpassing the $1 billion raised after President Joe Biden stepped aside and made her the nominee. It has also been reported that Harris spent six figures building a set for the interview she did on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast. The set was built in a hotel room in Washington, D.C., but made to look like Cooper’s actual set in Los Angeles, The Washington Examiner reported. The Harris campaign declined to comment on finances for The Examiner’s report, but a post-election report will be available within 30 days, as mandated by the Federal Election Commission. While they’re not revealing specifics now, the campaign already disclosed in October that it had spent more than $880 million. This number was much greater than the amount spent by the Trump campaign, which was an estimated $354 million. Amanda Harding contributed to this piece.

CBS Anchor Throws Objectivity Out The Window, Gets Passive-Aggressive Over Trump Cabinet Picks

CBS News anchor Scott Pelley opened Sunday’s broadcast of “60 Minutes” with a rundown of President-elect Donald Trump’s prospective Cabinet appointments — and it was clear by a few seconds in that he had given up approaching the matter with even the slightest bit of objectivity. Pelley began his monologue with a straight rundown of Trump’s landslide victory, but got progressively more colorful after pivoting to Trump’s Cabinet appointments. This past week, Republicans won the House majority and President-elect Trump named several of the people he’s picked for his Cabinet. https://t.co/mEN4CWeXMW pic.twitter.com/lZKBK25YPY — 60 Minutes (@60Minutes) November 18, 2024 “This past week, Republicans won the House majority and President-elect Trump made nominations to his cabinet,” Pelley said, adding “Some nominees appear to have no compelling qualifications other than loyalty to Trump.” He went on to deliver his personal opinion on several of the nominees in question — including prospective Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and prospective Health & Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “Pete Hegseth to lead the three million people at the Department of Defense,” he said, adding, “He’s a combat veteran, most recently a morning show host on Fox News, with no government experience.” “Former Congressman Matt Gaetz for Attorney General, in charge of law enforcement,” Pelley continued. “Gaetz has been investigated for alleged drug use and sex with a minor. Gaetz denies those allegations.” “Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence,” Pelley added. “She sought a pardon for Edward Snowden, who leaked U.S. secrets and now lives in Russia.” “And Robert Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health & Human Services, a skeptic of vaccinations,” he concluded. “It’s up to the new Republican majority in the Senate to decide whether these nominees are equipped to represent the American people.” On X, newly-named White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Pelley’s monologue. “@60Minutes slammed Pete Hegseth tonight for having ‘no government experience.’ NEWSFLASH: The Pentagon is full of people with decades of ‘government experience’ and they just failed their 7th audit in a row. The American people re-elected President Trump with a resounding mandate because they want drastic change. That’s why he’s choosing change-makers like Hegseth to join him in the Swamp. 60 Minutes doesn’t get it. They never will.”

Sunny Hostin: ‘Morning Joe’ Went To Mar A Lago To ‘Kiss Trump’s Ring’

Sunny Hostin, a far-left co-host of ABC’s “The View,” slammed the co-hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” for going to Mar-a-Lago to try to curry favor with President-elect Donald Trump. “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said during Monday morning’s show that they met with Trump over the weekend “to restart communications.” It was the first time that they had spoken to him in seven years after they have repeatedly attacked him, including comparing him to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. The show has been so rabidly hostile to Trump that MSNBC pulled it off the air the day after Trump was shot because the network was reportedly worried about what might be said on air. “The bottom line is that America needs a free press that is willing to speak truth to power right now more than ever,” Hostin claimed. “And I think that we have to be very clear eyed when we think about the president-elect and cover the president-elect.” “And I don’t think you need to sit down for 90 minutes at Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring to be able to speak truth and to be able to cover a story,” she continued. “So maybe they’re not journalists in the true sense.” Hostin claimed Trump was “the guy who ushered in the era of fake news.” “He is the guy who ushered in alternative facts,” she claimed. “He is the guy who attacked three black female journalists. He’s the guy that revoked Jim Acosta’s press credentials for asking him a question. And so I think that this president-elect, I hate to say it would like nothing more than to have only Fox News cover him. Would like nothing more than a state-sponsored media.” She concluded by claiming that Trump could not “be trusted in the way that other presidents can be trusted.” WATCH: Sunny Hostin of The View voiced her outrage over MSNBC’s Morning Joe hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, holding a meeting with Donald Trump. “I don’t think you need to sit down for 90 minutes at Mar-a-Lago and kiss his ring” pic.twitter.com/mrH8tLG53c — Breaking911 (@Breaking911) November 18, 2024

Get more rest, wake up earlier, and change your night owl habits in 8 simple steps

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM Many people naturally feel more awake and productive at night, making it an ideal time for creativity and focus. However, if you have to get up early for work or school, staying up late might not be the best choice. Shifting your internal clock may appear difficult, but it is perfectly feasible with the appropriate approach. Here’s a step-by-step method to transitioning from night owl to early bird, so you can sleep well and wake up rejuvenated. 1. Embrace morning light exposure One of the most effective strategies to reset your sleep schedule is to get sunlight early in the day. According to the CDC, early exposure to natural light signals to your body that it is time to begin waking up earlier. If sunlight is not an option for any reason, a UV lamp or lightbox can provide a comparable effect. 2. Establish consistent sleep and wake times When it comes to changing your sleep habits, consistency is crucial. Setting your alarm for the same time every day, even on weekends, will help you stick to your new routine. Try to ease into it by altering your bedtime in tiny steps over several days. This approach is gentler on your body and psyche than attempting a major change all at once. 3. Avoid late-day caffeine It’s no surprise that caffeine can keep you awake at night. This stimulant inhibits adenosine, a natural substance that causes tiredness. In the afternoon and evening, avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, soda, and energy drinks. Instead, consider drinking caffeine-free herbal teas like chamomile, which may help you relax. 4. Limit screen time before bedtime It’s tempting to scroll or binge-watch before bedtime, but blue light from screens can disrupt your sleep cycle. Aim to turn off all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed. A dark, screen-free atmosphere helps your body prepare for sleep. 5. Get moving  Regular exercise, regardless of intensity, can improve sleep quality. Even a brisk walk can assist, as research indicates that physical exercise promotes peaceful sleep. However, avoid strenuous exertion less than an hour before bedtime. Evening workouts rarely affect sleep, but it’s better to end your session long before going to bed to give your body time to relax. 6. Take melatonin for a natural boost Melatonin is normally produced by the body in reaction to darkness, however, melatonin pills may help you fall asleep faster. Remember to ask your doctor before starting any new supplements, as they may interact with other prescriptions. Mild allergic reactions are possible side effects, and melatonin may be unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. 7. Create a cool and comfortable sleeping environment Your body’s core temperature dips before bedtime, indicating that it is time to sleep. Maintaining a chilly bedroom (preferably between 60-65°F) can aid with sleep. According to studies, warmer room temperatures can affect sleep quality. Keeping your bedroom cool, quiet, and dark can make a significant impact. 8. Create a relaxing bedtime routine Setting up a pre-sleep routine can assist your body know when it’s time to go to rest. Gentle stretching, moisturizing, reading, or listening to quiet music can all contribute to a relaxing ritual that helps you fall asleep more easily. Other suggestions for winding down include: • Changing into pajamas signals relaxing time. • Use a fan to create a relaxing sleep environment with its cold air and white noise. • Dim the lights: Lowering the illumination in your home encourages your body to relax. Why do some people stay up late? Night owl behaviors are more than just a personal preference. Genetics, age, and lifestyle all influence your normal sleep-wake cycle, or chronotype. Some people have a “late chronotype,” which means they are most awake at night and prefer to sleep late in the mornings. If lifestyle changes are insufficient to overcome these tendencies, consult with a healthcare physician, who may be able to suggest additional options. Adjusting your internal clock for restful nights and early mornings While some of us may have a late-night chronotype, we may change our sleep patterns. Light exposure is one of the most efficient ways to reset our internal clocks, coupled with a consistent wake-up time, a restful bedroom atmosphere, and a relaxing pre-sleep ritual. By focusing on these tactics, you can reset your body’s sleep routine and begin to appreciate earlier mornings with renewed vitality. The post Get more rest, wake up earlier, and change your night owl habits in 8 simple steps  first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

A new CAR T-cell therapy for lupus brings hope for a cure

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM A new and promising treatment for lupus could mean the end of lifetime medication for patients suffering from the chronic autoimmune illness. CAR T-cell therapy is a novel approach that genetically changes a patient’s immune cells to target and combat the disease. This therapy, which is well-known for its use in treating certain cancers, has recently shown promise as a game-changing alternative for lupus patients, prompting excitement and hope among doctors. What is lupus? Lupus is a complex autoimmune illness in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, resulting in symptoms such as joint pain, skin problems, exhaustion, and organ inflammation. Its effects can range from minor to fatal, with the heart, lungs, brain, and kidneys often at risk. Many of the world’s five million lupus patients rely on a variety of medicines, including steroids and immunosuppressants, to control their symptoms throughout their lifetimes. Lupus affects women disproportionately, which complicates the research for more effective treatments. How CAR T-cell therapy may transform lupus treatment CAR T-cell treatment works by reprograming a patient’s T-cells (a kind of immune cell) to target and destroy dangerous cells, potentially fixing the underlying immunological malfunction that causes lupus. Professor Ben Parker, a consultant rheumatologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, explained that this therapy could be transformative: “Lupus is a disease that requires lifelong medication, but this therapy has the potential to change that, which is incredibly exciting. This groundbreaking new therapy marks a significant milestone in our research into lupus.” While the medication has already shown benefits in cancer patients, it is now being studied for other illnesses, including severe forms of lupus. If successful, it might lead to remission and perhaps a cure, something that lupus patients and activists have longed for for years. Early success and patient experience Katherine, 32, became the first British lupus patient to get CAR T-cell therapy in July at Manchester Royal Infirmary. After only a few weeks, she reported feeling “more energy” and less joint swelling, which had been a recurrent complaint. “I’m feeling hopeful for the future,” she said. Katie Tinkler, 50, of Guildford, Surrey, is another patient who has benefited from the trial. She has had lupus for 30 years and suffers from consequences such as kidney illness. She recently received the treatment and expressed her excitement about the opportunity. “If this works, it’s life-changing,” Tinkler added. “Until now, there’s never been anything for lupus that is a possible cure. The dream is to be lupus-free—that would be phenomenal.” Understanding treatment processes and risks While this therapy offers a lot of hope, it’s important to note that patients must stay in the hospital for ten days for CAR T-cell treatment. This is because there are certain dangers associated with the medication, such as immunological suppression, which can render patients more susceptible to infection for several weeks. However, for many people with worsening lupus symptoms and severe consequences, the potential advantages may exceed the risks. Dr. Eleni Tholouli, director of Manchester Royal Infirmary’s adult stem cell transplant unit, called the trial an “incredibly exciting time” for lupus patients, adding, “We hope [the treatment] will provide positive outcomes and revolutionize treatment options for patients with the disease.” Looking ahead: What this breakthrough means for lupus patients Patients who receive CAR T-cell therapy will be monitored for 15 years to determine the long-term consequences and efficacy of the treatment in slowing or reversing lupus. Doctors hope this new method may repair the underlying immunological deficiency in severe cases of lupus, effectively curing the condition. Autolus Limited, a business that specializes in the development of innovative medicines, sponsored the trial’s CAR T-cell therapy, obecabtagene autoleucel. With promising early results, this medication has the potential to be a game changer for lupus sufferers worldwide. A new era for lupus treatment? CAR T-cell treatment offers hope for a future in which treating the condition does not mean a lifetime of medication for lupus patients. This ground-breaking technique, which uses the body’s immune system, can potentially revolutionize how we treat autoimmune diseases. With additional research and patient monitoring, a cure may be within reach. The post A new CAR T-cell therapy for lupus brings hope for a cure first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.
