How a Cash-Strapped County Found Success with a 32-Hour Workweek: It’s ‘Life Changing’

In the Washington county of San Juan, the transition to a 32-hour, or 4-day workweek, has generated a year’s worth of data that has county workers excited. The cash-strapped San Juan had projected that the union-negotiated salary rises would climb above the payroll budget for the year, and the reduction in working hours has helped […] The post How a Cash-Strapped County Found Success with a 32-Hour Workweek: It’s ‘Life Changing’ appeared first on Good News Network.

But What About Second Breakfast? When My Cats Think They’re Hobbits

The post But What About Second Breakfast? When My Cats Think They’re Hobbits by Dr. Karyn Kanowski BVSc MRCVS (Veterinarian) appeared first on Catster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren't considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Catster.com. Hi, I’m Dr. Karyn! Read my introduction to learn more about me and meet my five hilarious cats: Clutch, Cyril, Alex, Zelda, and Zazzles. One problem I’ve never had to deal with in my house is picky eaters. The most likely reason for this is competition. There was only one time that I had a single pet in the house, and that was Clutch, a cat that had come to me fresh from the mean streets of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, UK, and a street cat is never going to pass up a meal! Although it’s not always the case, most cats and dogs that are fussy eaters, or leave their food to come back to later, are only children. As soon as there is another mouth that might steal your food, you learn to eat what you are given when you are given it! The other reason many pets become picky is that they are in the process of training their humans. Although it’s perfectly fine, and not at all dangerous, for a cat or dog to miss the occasional meal (as long as they’re not unwell or doing it on a regular basis), many owners will get quite worried if their pet refuses to eat their food. So what do they do? They race to the kitchen to find something more tempting, like some fresh chicken or fish, or some leftover rice pudding…you get where I’m going with this. Animals aren’t silly, and once they realize that turning their nose up at their regular food will get them something even better, it’s only a matter of time before their cat or dog food is being replaced with a rotating smorgasbord of Michelin star-worthy meals. Fortunately, I have never fallen victim to this particular form of manipulation, and my cats remain unaware that things like cooked chicken pieces are anything but an ‘after-dinner digestif’. However, they have managed to work out one way to manipulate their way into the occasional second breakfast or dinner. My five Hobbits…I mean cats Cats and Hobbits Unless you’ve been living in a (Hobbit) hole, you’ll have heard of Lord of the Rings, and even those of you who haven’t watched the films (multiple times, in the extended versions, and with cast commentary) as I have, might have heard the quote from the mischievous Pippin: We’ve had one breakfast, yes, but what about second breakfast? Not to mention ‘elevenses, luncheon, and afternoon tea.’ We’ve established that my cats don’t shy away from a feed, and in fact, they can be downright greedy. But, they are also quite cunning. Twice a day, all five cats gather together to meow and nag to make sure that Husband and I don’t forget to feed them. We never have, but obviously, they don’t want to leave anything to chance. If one of us has beaten the other home, or left for work early, we can usually tell if the cats have been fed by the enthusiasm of the group’s demands. On most days, one or two will come begging for some more later, but we are not going to be fooled by the food-loving Cyril into feeding them again. Every now and then, maybe once or twice a month, I swear that the cats come together and agree to go for a second meal. They will come to either Husband or me, whichever one hasn’t already fed them, demanding, with all five voices, to be fed. It’s not until the food is down that a voice comes from downstairs, saying “I’ve already fed them!” Sharing is caring The Conspiracy Theory You might be thinking that I’m reading too much into the behavior of a group of greedy cats, but here’s why I believe that this is a coordinated attack: In order for their plea for ‘second breakfast’ (or elevenses, supper, etc) to work, all five cats need to be in on it – if only a few (usually Cyril or Zelda) come begging, we can assume that they have all been fed, and that they are just hoping for second helpings. they need to target the person who didn’t already feed them – for obvious reasons. they can’t do it too often – if they were all begging for more food every day, we would never be fooled. It is because they only do this very occasionally that they manage to pull it off. Everyone needs to be in on the plan It might seem far-fetched to think that my cats are capable of such high-level espionage, but unless you can prove otherwise, I will continue to believe it! Do your cats manipulate you? Tell me about it in the comments below. This article is a part of Dr. Karyn's series with her five hilarious cats. Get Ready to Learn More about the Harkonnens in Dune: Prophecy

News Dune: Prophecy Get Ready to Learn More about the Harkonnens in Dune: Prophecy The series centers on two sisters who are ancestors to the family who brings down Leto Atreides By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on November 15, 2024 Credit: Attila Szvacsek/HBO Comment 0 Share New Share Credit: Attila Szvacsek/HBO Dune: Prophecy is premiering in days. The prequel series takes place 10,000 years before the events in Frank Herbert’s first Dune novel, and centers on the growing influence of the Bene Gesserit, specifically through the actions of the Reverend Mother, Valya, played by Emily Watson. Valya, along with her sister Tula (played by Olivia Williams), happen to be Harkonnens, the family that aim to destroy House Atreides in Dune. The Harkonnens are ruthless in Herbert’s novel, and the Harkonnens from 10,000 years ago appear to be the same. “Everything she does is fueled by rage and a sense of vengeance,” Watson said about Valya at a press conference Reactor attended. “And then she was spotted by a charismatic cult leader who said, ‘I see you. You’re very powerful. You’re very special… come and help me shape the future of mankind.’ And that’s an incredibly dangerous, enabling thing to do to someone who is essentially, probably bears some kind of DNA relation to a shark.” Watson later added that nothing fazes Valya: “Terrible things are happening. People are dying all around her. And she’ll be just figuring out, ‘What can I get from this situation? How can I advance the cause? How does that serve me?’” Williams added that Tula, who is Valya’s younger sister, keeps her rage inside. “But watch out for the quiet ones,” she warned at the same press conference, adding that Tula’s “science nerd” background allows her to eliminate her enemies efficiently and effectively. “She’s troubled by her conscience,” said Williams. “But does it make you a better person if you cry while you’re killing people?” You can see the Harkonnens in action when Dune: Prophecy premieres on HBO and Max on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes drop subsequent Sundays.[end-mark] The post Get Ready to Learn More about the Harkonnens in Dune: Prophecy appeared first on Reactor.

Couple Uses Wedding Fund And Life Savings To Save Dog Who Got Into A Hit-And-Run Accident

A couple from Arkansas has given up their wedding fund and is also using their life savings to save a Goldendoodle who is a victim of a hit-and-run accident. On November 02, Dylan McCay shares the story of how he and his fiancée, Emily Roberts, decided to help a Goldendoodle who was left to die on the side of the road. Documenting the whole thing on Facebook and creating an album called “Saving Acklin”, McCay first reveals that he saw a post on Halloween about an injured puppy left on the side of the road. “She had been struck by a vehicle in a hit and run. It had been raining all day and she was wet. I gathered towels and blankets and sped to the location,” McCay wrote. When McCay arrived at the location, he saw the puppy’s back legs covered in blood and appearing to be broken. He and a couple of kind strangers transported the pooch into McCay’s car and rushed her to the hospital. McCay said that despite the situation she was in, Acklin didn’t whine nor growl. Instead, she tried to crawl toward’s McCay and laid her head on his lap. Upon arriving at the hospital, McCay found that Acklin was not microchipped, meaning all medical expenses will now fall on McCay. It was a very big decision to make, given the injuries that the pooch sustained during the accident. However, McCay said, “I decided in that moment that I would do whatever was necessary to help this puppy. She deserved a chance at life.” McCay wrote, “She will have a long and difficult recovery ahead of her, but we are doing everything in our power to help this beautiful girl.” He then reveals, “We have pulled the money from our wedding fund and our overall life savings to fund these medical expenses.” The staff at the hospital told McCay how bad Acklin’s condition was – bruised lungs, both hind legs were broken, both femurs fractured, with one being an open fracture, infections, and numerous fleas. “The next morning (November 1st) the doctor called to inform me that the leg with the open fracture would need amputated and the other leg will need a specialist to perform a very difficult surgery,” McCay reveals. But this did not stop McCay and Roberts from helping Acklin recover. The couple searched for a surgeon in Conway, Little Rock, and Memphis to perform the “extremely difficult operation” before going on a 10-hour round trip to Mississippi State University (MSU) in hopes that they could help Acklin. Thankfully, the surgery at the Mississippi State University was a success. As a matter of fact, the team at MSU not only managed to reconstruct Acklin’s leg, but also managed to save the other one without having to amputate it. After the successful surgery, Acklin has to get physical therapy and consistent treatment at home to avoid further complications. McCay reveals, “The surgeons at MSU and doctors at Greenbrier are concerned that arthritis could set in early for her. Additionally, the surgeons at MSU felt that she could be quite prone to early hip dysplasia.” On a November 08 update, McCay reveals that the pooch has started to bear some weight on her back right leg and is now able to go on walks with just one MSU staff instead of two. “She begins official rehab this coming Monday and we are hoping to take her home on the weekend,” McCay reveals. The couple thanked everyone for the monetary donations and all the shares that their posts are getting. They wrote, “We cannot thank you all enough & words can never describe the gratitude Dylan & I are feeling. Our sweet girl is able to get this much deserved help because of all of you.” Acklin will continue to recover, but the journey ahead is still long. So, if you can help Acklin in her journey of recovery and healing, you can donate on her GoFundMe. Alternatively, you can share McCay and Emily‘s posts about Acklin’s journey on Facebook to get her story out there!
