Image: Cruise GM’s Cruise will pay a criminal fine of $500,000 to resolve a federal investigation and accept a deferred prosecution agreement after the company admitted to falsifying a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) “with the intent to impede, obstruct, or influence the investigation” of a crash where one of its driverless vehicles struck and dragged a pedestrian in 2023. NHTSA had already fined Cruise $1.5 million in September for submitting incomplete reports that failed to disclose that the robotaxi dragged the pedestrian 20 feet after they were hit by another vehicle and knocked into its path. Created to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of Casio getting into the digital watch business, the CRW-001-1JR will be available in Japan starting in December for ￥19,800, or around $128. Although the tiny watch’s case is just shy of being an inch in size, Casio has managed to squeeze in a retro six-segment LCD screen that can display hours, minutes, and seconds. It's an app that not only analyzes everything stored on your iPhone but also helps you clean up even social media clutter. If you like to share photos, videos, and other files through Instagram DM, Telegram, and so on, the app can help you visualize what might be occupying your storage so you can clear it up. It offers three categories: Low Risk (0-33% occupied): Your storage levels are healthy. No immediate action is needed; Moderate Risk (34-60% occupied) Storage usage is moderate. Consider monitoring and managing storage; High Risk (61-100% occupied): Storage usage is high. Performance issues may occur. Action is needed to free up space. The app even tells you that being part of the "Risk Group" could mean your iPhone performs slower, you can't take new photos or videos, your battery drains faster, and so on. The Storage Cleaner app helps you delete similar photos, see what you can erase without impacting your daily usage, and even help you clean data from social media apps in the "Social Cleaner" tab. Apple has been pretty serious about improving the iPhone's anti-theft features. With iOS 18, users can finally lock and hide apps with Face ID. These functions make sensitive data safer while preventing scammers from accessing key apps like banks, photos, emails, and more. However, another feature went unnoticed for months. As first reported by 404 Media, law enforcement officers were having issues with iPhones rebooting under "mysterious circumstances." It seems iOS 18 has an inactivity reboot (or an auto-reboot) feature that forces iPhones to restart after some time. While little was known about this, researcher Jiska Classen posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) how auto-reboot on iPhone works. She showed the inactivity reboot feature in action on an iPhone running iOS 18.2 beta 2. https://twitter.com/naehrdine/status/1856802400897503487 In the experiment, we can see that an iPhone left alone without being unlocked reboots after 72 hours. She explains: "Inactivity reboot puts your iPhone into 'Before First Unlock' state, effectively locking encryption keys in the Secure Enclave Processor. Even if thieves leave your iPhone powered on for a long time, they won't be able to unlock it with cheaper, outdated forensic tooling." She reiterates that even if this feature makes it more challenging for law enforcement to get data from criminals' devices, it "won't lock them out completely. Three days is still plenty of time when coordinating steps with professional analysts." The researcher also notes that Apple also prompts users on iOS 18.2 beta to enable Stolen Device Protection. This iOS 17.3 feature was previously hidden under the iPhone's settings, but the company wants users to be aware of it. Stolen Device Protection adds a new layer of protection that helps you keep your data safe even if your iPhone is stolen.
