Democrat Governor Reportedly To Relaunch Congestion Pricing Program

Multiple outlets reported that New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is set to relaunch a controversial congestion pricing program with a $9 base toll for passenger cars. The original toll, for vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street, was $15 on cars. Before the Democrat governor placed an ‘indefinite’ pause on the program, it was scheduled to begin in June. Gov. Hochul to relaunch controversial NYC congestion pricing: sources https://t.co/WRdplUFRo7 pic.twitter.com/4oNeNAdXJS — New York Post (@nypost) November 13, 2024 From the New York Post: The governor’s office had eyed an even-lower toll of $7, sources said, but doing so would trigger a lengthy, potentially congestion pricing-killing, environmental review. “They felt like $9 is where they could land,” one source said. Sources said Hochul is eyeing increasing the base toll – which can go as high as $23, as set by a past environmental review – within the first three years. In a statement, the governor’s office said Hochul paused congestion pricing in the first place because a daily $15 toll would be too much for hard-working New Yorkers in a tight economy. “Tomorrow, the Governor will announce the path forward to fund mass transit, unclog our streets and improve public health by reducing air pollution,” the statement Wednesday read. “Pretending to stop an unpopular congestion tax before an election, only to resurrect it after the vote & ram it through before the party that opposed it takes office, truly validates every cynical view of government & reminds people why they hate two-faced politicians above all,” New York City Council member Joe Borelli, a Republican, commented. Pretending to stop an unpopular congestion tax before an election, only to resurrect it after the vote & ram it through before the party that opposed it takes office, truly validates every cynical view of government & reminds people why they hate two-faced politicians above all. — Joe Borelli (@JoeBorelliNYC) November 13, 2024 “Governor Hochul’s move to pause congestion pricing before the election to help her party win, knowing it’s unpopular, only to reinstate it afterward when her party lost, is a blatant political move and a shameless betrayal of New Yorkers,” New York City Council member Robert Holden said. “This brazen arrogance is why trust in government is at an all-time low. Voters will remember this at election time!” he added. This brazen arrogance is why trust in government is at an all-time low. Voters will remember this at election time! (2/2) — Robert Holden (@BobHoldenNYC) November 13, 2024 Per Gothamist: Sources who spoke to Gothamist named competing start dates for the new toll program. One source with direct knowledge of Hochul’s plan, who was also not authorized to speak on the topic, said the MTA board plans to approve the new tolls during its next meeting on Nov. 20 — and that the governor plans to launch the program Dec. 29. Another source briefed on the topic said they were told the tolls would launch in the first week of 2025. The governor’s move comes just over a week after the election, and more than five months after she abruptly paused congestion pricing weeks before it was set to launch. New York state lawmakers first approved the program in 2019, with the goal of charging drivers a fee for entering Manhattan south of 60th Street. The MTA previously planned to charge a $15 base toll starting June 30. The revenue from the program is legally required to fund $15 billion worth of essential repairs to the MTA’s transit systems. In pausing the program, Hochul claimed the tolls would be too costly for drivers who were already wrestling with inflation. Two sources said the governor was asked by congressional Democratic leaders to hold off on launching the tolls until after the election in hopes of winning competitive House races in the city’s suburbs. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to kill congestion pricing once he takes office, but transit advocates say Trump will have a harder time dismantling the tolls if they launch by the time he takes office. Local Republicans have vowed to challenge the program.

Horrific Factory Explosion Leaves Two Dead, Injures About A Dozen Others

A horrific explosion at a food dye factory in Kentucky killed two individuals and injured about a dozen others. The incident occurred in the Clifton neighborhood of Louisville. Officials report that multiple people are trapped, injured, or missing. As witnesses described the explosion as massive, with the blast shattering windows in nearby buildings,” Rawsalerts wrote Tuesday. “Emergency crews have issued a shelter-in-place order within a one-mile radius due to hazardous materials. The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown and will be investigated,” the post added. #BREAKING: A significant Explosion Leaves Multiple People Trapped and injured or missing with One Mile Shelter in Place Issued Due to Hazardous Materials #Clifton | #Kentucky At this time Numerous emergency responders are currently on the scene following a significant… pic.twitter.com/Zl8Pdx2p10 — R A W S A L E R T S (@rawsalerts) November 12, 2024 Per NBC News: Food and cosmetics company Givaudan said that the blast occurred at its Sense Colour factory, east of downtown, and that two of its team members were killed. The blast happened around 3 p.m. local time at the facility, which makes natural food colorings. Fire Chief Brian O’Neill credited the workers with their emergency response to get most people out. Firefighters rescued one person who was trapped and assisted others in escaping the building. “Once we got the fire knocked down, we immediately started air monitoring for the immediate area,” O’Neill said. “You may have heard that there was an evacuation; that was a precautionary measure.” He said that was ordered because authorities did not know what they were up against. Nothing has shown chemical issues in the air to cause concern, he said. “We have a heartbreaking update from Louisville: Two people have died from the explosion that took place yesterday. I hope everyone will join Britainy and me in praying for their families and the entire community,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear wrote. Five other patients receiving treatment are in stable condition, Smith said. UofL is treating seven of the 11 people hospitalized in the explosion. Smith said patients were either injured by the force of the blast, burns, or debris that had fallen during the explosion. The patients UofL received were cleaned in a decontamination process prior to receiving treatment for their wounds, he said. “For something like this, they had exposure to a lot of different chemicals, so we made sure we decontaminate them for everything,” Smith said. Grieving Daughter Shares Beautiful Snapshots Of “The Kind Of Person My Dad Was”

A grieving daughter has been sharing some of her favorite memories of her dad on social media, and some of them are absolutely precious. Whitney’s father was a truly loving parent who stopped at nothing to make his little girl feel special. Now that this young woman is all grown up, she appreciates everything this man did for her even more. Her memorial post is a beautiful testament to their one-of-a-kind relationship. In her slideshow, the grieving woman recalled many of the specific ways that her dad was there for her during good times and bad. For example, on one occasion, Whitney had come to her father with a personal problem. He not only offered his support, but he also came up with a hilariously creative solution! Screengrab from TikTok “When I went through my first heartbreak my dad took me on a boat to the middle of nowhere and told me to scream it out,” the young woman said in her post. “We both stood there screaming until the screams turned to laughter. I felt so understood.” Another time, Whitney was feeling down because her sisters had both won something at the carnival, while she’d walked away with nothing. Dad had the best response! He bought her a stuffed animal at the store, then pretended that the little girl had won it herself. This man wanted his daughter to know that she “was always a winner in his eyes.” Isn’t that sweet? After reading this grieving woman’s social media post about her late dad, some commenters felt like they knew him. Everyone agreed that he sounded like an incredible father! Screengrab from TikTok “How different would our lives be if we all had a dad like this,” wrote one user. Another added, “This healed something for me, truly you got to experience what a father should be.” It must have been heart-wrenching for Whitney to lose her father, especially when they had such a close relationship. However, we know that this man will live on in his daughter’s wonderful memories. You can find the source of this story’s featured image here.
