Organized labor in America seems to be at a crossroads. On the one hand‚ the union membership rate in 2022 dropped to 10.1%‚ the lowest level on record. At the same time‚ Americans’ approval of unions in general has been on the rise since 2012. And if the current data is any indication‚ the latest generation to enter the workforce is poised to give unions a surge the likes of which they haven’t seen in decades. While they’re at it‚ they might also fundamentally change the meaning and purpose of the labor movement in this country. Gen Z shows strong pro-union tendencies. According to the 2020 American National Election Studies survey‚ Gen Z gave unions a 64.3% approval rating‚ surpassing Millennials at 60.5%‚ Gen X at 57.8%‚ and Baby Boomers at 57.2%. They’ve demonstrated their commitment as active organizers‚ unionizing student workers on college campuses and baristas at Starbucks locations across the country. The Left-leaning Center for American Progress reports that not only is Gen Z the most pro-union generation currently alive‚ they are more pro-union than other generations were at the same age. Gen Z’s strong support for unions is a broader part of their demonstrated predisposition for political activism. John Della Volpe of the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics‚ the author of “Fight: How Gen Z Is Channeling Their Fear and Passion to Save America‚” has observed that this generation has chosen “to lean in and fight and try to change the system‚” on issues from climate change to gun control to foreign policy. As American labor unions struggle to decide whether their primary function is to negotiate on behalf of workers or to act as foot soldiers and financial backers for a kaleidoscope of progressive political causes‚ it’s not difficult to see which side Gen Z will come down on. If the 74% of Gen Z members who consider Diversity‚ Equity‚ and Inclusion (DEI) policies to be a top priority are any indication‚ we can expect them to use the power of organized labor to implement DEI policies in more workplaces‚ following the lead of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT)‚ the second-largest teachers union in the United States. Indeed‚ teachers’ union activism has become the norm nationwide. The National Education Association (NEA)‚ the nation’s largest teachers union‚ promotes and provides teaching resources on pro-LGBTQ+ topics on its website. The Oakland Education Association took an anti-Israel stance by endorsing a ‘teach-in’ in support of Gaza.  If the 60% of young Americans who consider Hamas’ October 7‚ 2023 massacre of Israeli citizens to be “justified” end up joining their workplace unions‚ they will likely be only too happy to support more such actions. The data is regrettably clear: with this trend towards increased activism‚ representation for actual union members has suffered. Some of the nation’s largest labor unions routinely spend as much or more on political activities than they do on representing their existing members. For example‚ in 2022 the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)‚ representing over 1.8 million workers‚ spent $63.5 million on political activities and lobbying‚ which is more than double what it spent representing its membership. The American Federation of Teachers spent $46.9 million supporting Left-wing politics in 2023‚ while the National Education Association spent less on member representation than it did on political causes. Organized labor is already diverting too much time and money away from the well-being of workers and toward unrelated political agendas. As more members of Gen Z join unions and gain leadership positions‚ we can only expect this trend to increase. As a member of Gen Z‚ it is disheartening to watch my generation embrace the entanglement of labor unions and partisan politics. Rather than prioritizing the genuine needs of their members‚ unions carry out the agendas of their Democratic allies‚ advocating for policies that prioritize a political agenda over addressing the practical concerns of workers. When they push for unreasonable demands such as a four-day work week (supported by 83% of Gen Z and Millennial workers)‚ it undermines good faith collective bargaining. The regular union members‚ who deserve representation that is focused on responding to their needs‚ will be the ones to suffer. The American labor movement has lost its way‚ and unfortunately‚ Gen Z doesn’t look poised to help find it any time soon. However‚ despite the prevalence of Gen Z’s mindset‚ there is hope to be found in the workers all over the country pushing back against that mentality. A viral video has emerged of a teenager falling from a ski lift in Mammoth‚ California‚ where the rescue attempt seemingly went awry. On the morning of January 27‚ the 16-year-old female snowboard reportedly climbed aboard the ski lift with three other riders‚ but was not seated properly atop the chair and slipped forward. She was hanging down from the ski lift approximately 30 feet above the ground for several minutes‚ suspended there as the other riders on the ski lift unsuccessfully attempted to pull her back up at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. The rescue attempt involved ski lift employees who placed a net to catch the girl when she fell‚ but the net was apparently not strong enough to break her fall. Mammoth released a statement: At approximately 11:40am on Jan 27‚ a 16-year-old female snowboarder loaded Stump Alley Express (Chair 2) with two other riders. As the chair began its ascent‚ the guest‚ who for unknown reasons was not completely seated‚ began sliding off the chair. The other individuals on the chair grabbed hold of the guest and held her from falling as Lift Operators stopped the lift. Five Mammoth Mountain employees and eight guests immediately responded and positioned the deceleration net under the guest. When the guest slipped from the grasp of her chair mates‚ the net decelerated her fall‚ but did not stop it. The guest was transported to Mammoth Hospital for evaluation. Our thoughts are with the guest and her family. “When she finally dropped down‚ she really just clipped the edge of the net; she didn’t land in the center where she was supposed to land‚ so I don’t think it did really too much to break her fall‚” one eyewitness said. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) subpoenaed Fulton County‚ Georgia‚ District Attorney Fani Willis on Friday following allegations that the leftist district attorney fired a staffer who tried to warn her about misusing federal funds. The subpoena is part of the Judiciary Committee’s probe into whether Willis used federal funds in her investigation of former President Donald Trump. Willis‚ who is pursuing convictions for Trump in a Georgia racketeering and election interference case‚ has failed to voluntarily hand over documents after the Judiciary Committee requested them multiple times last year‚ Jordan wrote in a letter addressed to Willis. Jordan said the committee’s oversight of Willis’ office is “particularly relevant” given the recent allegations that the DA’s office misused federal funds and then fired the whistleblower who tried to warn Willis of the misuse‚ which was first reported by The Washington Free Beacon. “These allegations raise serious concerns about whether you were appropriately supervising the expenditure of federal grant funding allocated to your office and whether you took actions to conceal your office’s unlawful use of federal funds‚” the letter states. The Free Beacon reported that it reviewed a recording that revealed Amanda Timpson — an employee in the district attorney’s office — met with Willis in 2021 and warned her that one of her campaign aides “planned to use part of a $488‚000 federal grant—earmarked for the creation of a Center of Youth Empowerment and Gang Prevention—to pay for ‘swag‚’ computers‚ and travel.” Timpson was reportedly fired less than two months after meeting with Willis. Hubbard was allowed to compete thanks to approval from the International Olympic Committee and the International Weightlifting Federation‚ which set the requirements for trans-identifying athletes seeking to compete in women’s sports. The next stop for Hubbard was the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo‚ where he was expected to win a medal. Hubbard’s Olympic Games were cut short‚ however‚ after three failed lifts knocked him out of medal contention. Fallon Fox — MMA Rob Kim/Getty Images Fallon Fox began competing in MMA fights and dominating women even before “coming out” and telling people that he was born a male and underwent gender surgery. The news sparked outrage in the MMA world as commentators such as Joe Rogan pointed out that even though Fox had received gender surgery and hormone treatments‚ he still had a physical advantage over the women he was fighting. Between 2012 and 2014‚ Fox boasted a 5-1 record against women‚ winning three of the fights by technical knockout (TKO) or knockout (KO). Fox reportedly faced at least three women before disclosing that he was born a male. Sadie Schreiner — Track  Track athlete Camden Schreiner changed his name to Sadie after high school and began identifying as female before breaking women’s track records at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In December‚ Schreiner set a new school record in the 300m dash at an event at Nazareth University in New York‚ clocking in at 41.80 seconds‚ which was also good for first place in the race. Schreiner reportedly competed in the same track event a year before as a male and finished in 19th place in the 100m dash. If you ask me‚ winter walks are one of the best things about this time of the year. That being said‚ this is also when certain paths become particularly treacherous. That’s certainly the case in Wentzville‚ Missouri. In fact‚ firefighters were recently called to rescue a dog who had ventured out onto an icy pond. The dog and their owner were no doubt out for a nice walk when the incident took place. The ice may have seemed sturdy enough‚ but local firefighters have been urging that the ice found on these ponds and lakes are “extremely dangerous right now.” This poor pup had to learn this the hard way. Luckily‚ though‚ those same firefighters were quick to their rescue! Missouri Firefighters Save Dog From Icy Pond When the dog fell into the pond‚ their owner immediately called first responders.
